Thought it would be interesting to have a thread on the coming US election.
Will Biden stand , if not who’ll replace him ? Heard a few names who might, bloke from California and woman from Michigan but don’t know a lot about either if I’m honest . Think it’s looking like he’ll have to be replaced but he seems determined to stay on …. how do the Dems get him to see sense or remove him ? Kamala Harris , not liked but next in line…..what happens there ?
Also what’s this Project 2025 thing that the right have going and a lot of people seem to be concerned/worried about ?

Horrifying but Trump says anything he wants to appeal to as many reactionary groups as possible. I've always felt the USA pretends it's a democracy but really wants to be an authoritarian state.

Strong Republican: 125All comes down to just 6 or 7 states doesn’t it in reality? 29 states have voted the same way at every Presidential election since 1992 or earlier. This time unless Trump does something (or the Democrats find someone) to move states that have recently voted the same way at election after election, then Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin will basically decide who is the next President...

Shame that nobody can convince him to step aside. If this was Russia he'd accidentally fall out of a window next week.

Biden refusing to step down is a real concern. He must know he’s not up to the job and certainly won’t be able to serve a full term again. He’s handing the victory to Trump on a plate along with everything that will entail, could be life changing for millions around the world and not in a good way. Losing all respect for him .

I'm not sure he does know. He's surrounded by sycophants who tell him and the world that all is well. It's jetlag one week, a nasty cold the next....all in denial. It's quite possible he believes he's absolutely fine. I don't support the idea of a coup for a moment but the idea of The Donald getting in again is terrifying. Given that he's the Democratic nominee, can he just be replaced without an election or electoral college or whatever fiendishly complicated system the Americans have? Is there some sort of no confidence vote they have? And if he can, who would do it? Make him go, that is? Maybe he can't be replaced unless he agrees.

So I’ve heard and understand, now he’s been selected it’s only him that can make the decision to stand down . You’d hope his wife would tell him but apparently she loves being First Lady as much as he does being president.

Trump says, he could take Biden out with just one punch. Think the best way to decide things is a decathlon of events between the two of them. Golf , boxing , climbing , downhill skiing etc . Would be good fun as well , hopefully they both have heart attacks and we then could get some sensible candidates as replacements.

He isn't yet the nominee - he's the presumptive nominee after winning 3,896 of 3,939 delegates from the various states. There is no legal or contractual obligation for those delegates to vote for him as the Democratic Presidential nominee at the convention in August, although it would be unprecedented if they did... ...in my opinion it would only need one or two more serious examples of him showing his age to seriously make the delegates consider switching their votes en-masse but it would also need a serious unifying candidate to emerge for them to get behind.

In terms of general relations, I'm a lot more sanguine about another Trump administration now that we've got a government not chasing some mythical trade deal with the US as some form of justification for Tory civil war, and concentrating on our own back yard, so to speak.
Relations with Putin and Ukraine is more of an issue, though. There is talk of the current Nato meeting trying to 'Trump proof' support for Ukraine, and Europe as a whole needs to get things in place too, becoming more self reliant being a key feature.

I thought we had it bad with our choices, but imagine being American.
It's like choosing to fight a polar bear or a crocodile.

The list of people saying/suggesting/hinting that Biden should step down is growing longer and longer...the first Democratic senator - Peter Welch from Vermont - has told him to step down, whilst Blumenthal from Connecticut, Tester from Montana and Brown from Ohio are reported as stating he should quit to other Democrats. Big money donors are drying up over the uncertainty. Celebrity supporters are dropping away or calling for change.
Kamala Harris is now favourite on most betting markets to be the nominee - if Biden releases his delegates it would become an open convention and anyone could stand - however she would have the benefit of 'inheriting' the money and staff raised by the Biden/Harris campaign so far.
Interesting times. Having watched him at those two most recent press conferences I can't see how he can run again.
