We have been saying it for months … Now a week before the season starts and we are still saying it.
WE NEED A STRIKER … out and out goal scorer !
Promise will develop … Chris Martin is way too slow … We need pace and finishing ability or that Smaller fox in the box type.
Looking more likely to be a loan - but who knows there might be a bigger picture that needs developing.
Frustrating to still be waiting though …

What is interesting is the club have spent over £1 million since new year on transfers and these ' big ' loan signings don't come cheap But you feel we still lack pace up front . Maybe Brown could be loaned out. The board have given Taylor a very good budget this season . Maybe they are hoping the quality of Thomas and Promise out wide will deliver a more direct approach to Martin & sotiriou?.

We’ll get a striker in on loan ( youngish with potential but not much experience)from a championship side in the last 48 hrs of the transfer window. Strikers always the last to move and we’re a long way down the pecking order.

According to papers we paid around £800_900k for both. Surely you can get a pacey striker in lower leagues for this sort of money £200-400k ?

A loan with little experience is utterly pointless..we have a few permanents players of our own who can score goals but reasons given above by others are exactly why we would have to spend some cash to bring in someone who will be the main man.

I think Promise will be the 15+ goal man as a genuine target No.9.
What's missing then is who provides 10+ alongside or behind him.

The loan market has served us well recently though? Elliot Anderson, Harvey Vale, Connor Taylor. Even Brandon Aguilera would have been class had he had a full season to gel with us. If we can get a very highly rated young striker from one of the top academies in the last few weeks of the window then it’s probably worth waiting for, we’re just feeling a bit short up top at the moment with Sotiriou injured and Chris Martin lacking fitness.

I still feel that a marque signing should have been a striker with a 15-20 goal per season record. This is what changes a team from being average to special and it doesnt matter how many promising players you have in midfield if you don't have enough players who score goals. I was hoping for a Devante Cole or a Will Evans, Sam Smith or similar to replace Collins. A reasonably experienced player signed permanently rather than a loaned player. The problem with getting a loan player is that if they do well you cant either sign them or make money out of them and if they are awful then they are a wasted spot in the squad. A winger is also another requirement. Two signings this week could define the season though I have to say the squad overall does look pretty good and the performances in the last two games at least give me hope.

Been our problem for many seasons now. Promise is very raw, we need a proven striker. Would not surprise me we will be saying the same in the January window.

Just a thought: given his age and that he can't play in the first game (or two?) maybe Martin is just on a different training schedule rather than having some sort of fitness problem.

We paid a rumoured £500K for Promise I doubt MT will get away with telling the owners that he's one for the future and they need to spend another £500K on a proven striker for this season. It seems clear to me Promise and Martin will be the No 9's this season, with Sotiriou being the other striker when he eventually gets fit, MT will probably now bring in a young loan player as back up, which he's already hinted he will be doing.
As far as the winger it's not clear what's happening with Antony, are we in talks with him or have we decided he's not good enough and there's better players available? We desperately need another winger or it's back to rely upon Sinclair and Thomas and that hardly worked out well last season.

I can’t see us buying another striker now. Taylor’s been given the budget and has spent on what he feels is best. I agree with others though, the striker position has been the issue for some time, cost tisdale his job, Garner, Barton amongst many other things off the field. Let’s hope Taylor isn’t another victim of it. I liked the look of shaw I must admit and hope we keep him and not loan him out.

Barton signed Martin who would have probably scored 20+ goals if we'd had a successful season, even after missing the start. The lack of a striker didn't cost JB his job.
MT's already suggested we'll be getting another striker anyway.

At the start of last season we started off with one NO 9, Marquis who had scored 11 goals the previous season , this season we have according to Matt Taylor three players that can play in that position and between them at this level last season they got over 32 goals, so I think we do have the players to get the goals but they need time to gel, and unfortunately two Martin and Sotiriou have missed pre- season with injuries. I agree that a fourth striker maybe required perhaps on loan , but i think we also need to be patient and see how we fair when all three are fit. We certainly have allot of quality forwards in our side and I am looking forward to watching them, when they are all fit, I Suspect the 9 and 10 slots will be shared between Sotiriou, Martin and Omachere .

Good points! I’m hopeful we have a loan agreed waiting for parent club to complete their preseason? Hopefully Coburn?!

Could get 2 or 3 options abroad of a similar or better quality for the reported £500k we spent on Omochere. I maintain that to get the best value for money and marginal gains on our competitors we will need to expand our scouting operations further afield and not fish in the same limited pond.

Comes with more risks though. Still, would be good for us to take a punt on someone from overseas. Would you say it looks like a generally good transfer window so far, all things considered?

If bargains can be signed from aboard then why is no other L1 teams doing it, including Posh just because players look good on YouTube doesn't mean they are going to perform in L1. The club have done well to put together what seems a decent recruitment team in a few months, expecting them to put one together which beats most other L1 clubs is expecting too much.
