I really hope the surgery goes well. Good luck with that part of it. It is important to have the check once you reach fifty.
I had mine checked a few years back. Like most men I was a bit apprehensive but the Doc was very professional. At one point, while he was rummaging around back there, he said, "don't worry Nobby it's quite normal to get an erection at this stage". I replied, "but I don't have an erection".........."I wasn't talking about you", he answered!

Great post OP. Bit of an eye opener (no bum intended). 'Tis good to inform. I've been putting this off for yonks because of the thing up the bum bit. I'm I too young to get checked at 42??? no yer never too young kippo , a few tips from experience, never ever under any circumstances say to the doc damn is that really your finger as it's feels too long and stout, as it fookin hurts when he removes his finger at 90mph, then as he wont be smiling don't say thank f**k your not gay as doctors don't seem to have a sense of humour .(yet again wendy said will you ever learn) I have a reason and a morbid fear about things in my arse, however it had to be done, and as there's now a blood test, go get it, in reality though doctors enjoy sticking their finger up yer bum even less that you do. Just go get it done at least you will know if there's anything wrong. my old man had lymphoma for years before it was diagnosed so i urge anyone to get tested if they have the slightest concern or worry about any medical condition

Ah, just read some of the replies.
Seems I'm late to the party with the bum jokes!
At the risk of hijacking the thread I'd urge you all to have a good feel of your testicles once a week too.
We are all so crap at discussing our health.
Fair play to you bud.

The process wasn't as unpleasant as I imagined. I'm still wondering how the doctor was able to keep both hands on my shoulders though!

Well done Newton Abbott Gas. Massive respect deserved by you and the others who have shared their stories ( even Nobby's joke 😀). I have total faith in you and the kettle.

Wasn't sure or not to post this but having spoken to a few of my Gashead friends they thought it would be the correct thing to do.So please read on .A couple of weeks ago i was told that i have Prostate Cancer and as you can imagine it was not something that you want to be told. But i am very positive about it as i have been told that it has been caught early and the prognosis is good.I am having my opp 25th of this month to remove the prostate ,then it will be a while to recover and get back to as normal as i can.The main reason i am posting this is NOT to gain any sympathy but to say to you guys out there that it's a simple blood test and advice from your GP that could save your life.I had and still have no symptoms whatsoever and am a quite fit 59 year old bloke.I found out that i had this problem because i have had regular tests over the last few years , the first few were normal then the PSA level started to rise which indicated that there might be a problem (PSA level is used as an indicator but have been told this isn't always the case that there is or isn't a problem so seek professional advice as i am not qualified i'm just letting you know what happened in my case. Men United have a website with info i have been told also).......I am posting this i suppose to make my negative into a positive .....if just one of you reading this thinks yeah i'm going to get checked out then i have succeeded.......Thanks for reading. Dont worry fellow Gasheads i will still be on Kettle duty for the first games of the season......Kettle on .....UTG mods please don't move this post as i want as many of you to read as possible ....Thanks. Forgot to mention. On my discharge notes it clearly states. No lifting of any object heavier than a kettle for 6-8 weeks after surgery. As this is your chosen vocation in life, you will still have plenty to occupy yourself.

I have also had this op in December last year and I am now cancer free. I echo the sentiments of the OP that it is a matter of life and death to have the test. If you get a diagnosis which we all fear its an operation which the NHS have perfected and I didn't experience any pain at all and I just missed one game Just before the op I had a phone call to say a mutual friend had died with the same disease, by the time he had symptoms and they had discovered it, it was too late. I heard about the blood test during a casual conversation with a friend of mine, that conversation saved my life and a blood test could save yours. I have bought a season ticket as usual and I look forward to next season, the new stadium and life with the dream team of Wael and Darrell. I want everyone of you to be able to do the same. Please, please have this test now. Thanks. UTG

A tip I picked up along the way was to have a private test as they go down the scale lower than the NHS ones. I recommend Bristol Urology as they charge £60 wheras some charge £300. Just ring them up if you need one. These post op blood tests are really important as its by these results that they decide if you need further treatment, they are more accurate, so well worth the £60.
