DC IMO used his heart rather than his head when he offered new contracts to Ollie Clarke, Gosling and Puddy; Sinclair had a year to run on his original deal, unfortunately he is also not good enough. We all know Mildy is at the end of his career, so before the beginning of the new season, a new keeper is a must, definitely a creative midfielder (maybe x2), plus a centre back if, lockyer is to be out long term.

Blimey! So much negativity. People have always said the league table doesn't really begin to take shape until around the 7 - 10 game mark. It seems our seasons league table is settled during friendlies and we're doomed.

It seems our seasons league table is settled during friendlies and we're doomed. I agree with the sentiment but for me and I suspect the others it's less about the result and the performance generally and more about telling signs from certain players that they don't seem up to the job, generally backed up by thoughts from games in previous seasons at a lower level. These players seem to be weak links in an otherwise promising squad. I think players like Leadbitter, Lockyer, Bodin, James, Moore, Taylor and possibly Brown are promising players who could go further along with the club, Mansell, Hartley, Montano, lines and Lawrence players who could do a job, and think with the 2-3 quality players DC has referred to we could be looking at having a decent go this year instead of pure consolidation. With players like Sinclair, Clarke and Gosling getting serious game time consolidation is at best.

Based on what I have seen from the three over the last two seasons and what I saw today confirmed to me that league two/Conference is their level as far as I am concerned. It is as simple as that. Agree Bideford. Amazes me how people think Gosling is suddenly going to become a better player by stepping up a league. How does that work? The difference in standard may suit his game more. Did Lines look like a player from the Champ when he played in the conference? Did Lambert get better as he went up the leagues? Does Gos play international football at a higher standard than league 1/2?

If we're going to criricise players then Matty Taylor and macca are getting off very lightly here. Taylor just hovered on the halfway line and was never near the 2 defenders to challenge anything that got Hooved. He might as well not been on the pitch. As for macca. Well you can't blame prem team for a awful pass to let them in. Looked out of depth admittedly against good opposition but he should have left the season we went down. He's no captain and I would rather we kept parkes over him. Manse looked better at CB on Tuesday.

I always try to be balanced and also to respect everyone's opinion after all that is the purpose of a forum but I must say that IMO much on this thread is a dramatic overreaction to yesterday's game. It was a preseason friendly against a strong but not full strength Swansea, never the less as pointed out at least one player was a £23m signing. From our side we didn't perform but we have a few injuries that sensibly we don't want to risk at this stage, we fielded a particularly weak starting 11 but as we saw things improved in the second half. I have no doubt a few of the squad will not be regular starters but feel most deserve a chance. If we had a squad of 28 guaranteed starters what sort of team spirit and balance would we have in the squad. DC has said that he wants to bring in 2/3 more quality additions, that takes time, IMO our priorities should be a Goalkeeper, a Centre Half and a strong experienced striker then we are looking in decent shape. If anyone reads my historical posts you will read I always champion our young players development, I take no greater pleasure than seeing players (ideally local) coming through the academy system and eventually making a positive contribution, I think the fans relate to that and the players relate to the club so it saddens me to hear people say the likes of Kilgour and Greenslade should have been released to create funds for more signings, both of these lads have potential they are just 18 and 20 respectively, both have been with the club for 10+ years, they will earn c.£150 week so won't break the bank and the reality is both will spend the majority of the year out on loan (continuing their development) so most if not all of their wages will be covered. It would be a very sad day if our club were to release all promising youth/junior pro's to fund a senior signing and IMO that is not a sustainable model for our club and is not what we should be about.

We are at div III level next year. The tier where Burton got through with only minor tweaks to their squad...and the level where limited players such as Nixon, MacClean, Twentyman etc were part of a squad to breeze the league. What both of those squads had was belief, and knowing their roles inside out...and that is what a DC squad always has. They can be weaker individually than players in their position in the division and still be cogs in the wheels of a stronger team. Don't write any of them off yet ... If they buy into the projects like they did last season we will surprise more than a few established third tier sides.

The trouble is that any form of Criticism is looked upon as negativity. Is wanting a team that can challenge for the Championship in both the style it plays and the players that it plays being negative? Even grass roots amateur football follows the same principles. If you go up a stage you get better players in, some of your what were regulars end up either on the bench or moving on. I agree it has to be thought about but there were players who struggled to get regular games last season and IMO some have not improved at all. It seems any criticism of anything DC does is looked upon as negative on here but I am sure that DC is learning every season and the great thing about him is that he seems to be able to work out what is wrong early on and sort it out. He has the ability to go on to be a great Manager but IMO the making of great Managers is their ability to not only change their players ability but to change their own tactics and look at their own deficiencies. The problem of going up in the League is that everytime you go up you need more money! Players who are with you expect to get League 1 wages even though they may or not be League 1 standard. Personally I think thankfully the step up to League 1 is not too great whereas after that the steps up are absolutely massive. The positives we have within our squad is that many of them can and will make the step up and we have a fine Maanager who would be first to admit that he is still learning. His decision to stay rather than go to Leeds for one is admirable as the money aspect was a no brainer- Even if he had failed he would have been a very rich man! Taylor had similar decisions to make and I think his decision was very similar to DC's in that they will both be testing themselves at a new level this year. So many make too great a step up at a particular time and don't make the grade and never recover- both players and Managers.
Secondly and most important is that we have many players who are good enough to play at League 1 level and maybe capable of playing higher with the further experience of at least another seasons experience .
Thirdly and possibly the most important is that we have momentum . They say success breeds success and history shows that is true and the important thing is to take advantage of that. The chances of success have increased with the takeover because it appears now we do have the Money to take the club forward and we have AMBITION burning from DC. If he thought consolidation was the best we can achieve he would have been gone- if not to Leeds to anyone who could match his ambitions. I conclude with the fanbase which we definitely have and in truth this is the area where the ambition is probably greatest of all and with the success we have had that ambition becomes greater. The takeover increases both Ambition and more importantly expectation. There will be those who have different expectations but is negativity looking at the bad points? or is negativity sitting back and accepting everything is rosy and right? I well remember those who treated Trollope as God and said the very things that are being said about DC. In truth nobody knows what the future holds but as a Rovers supporter we have the right to express both positive and negative comments without being accused of being negative and this IMO is what makes a forum, Respect other peoples views if they differ from your own and be able to accept criticism (not rudeness) because that applies to the owners, the Management, the players and at the end of the day the Supporters as well. How many of the names you just listed are going to get in the starting eleven? Probably none of them, they're just useful players to have if we suffer injuries and Sinclair can potentially come off the bench after 60 minutes and change the game. Having squad depth is particularly important now there are no short term loans and I for one won't worry if mcCrystal comes in for the odd game. By next week, DC would have got in a couple of quality signings and we will have a more than competitive team for league one. Some of the football we were playing last season was the best I've seen our players play and that includes division 3. We'll move on from Swansea and have two great games against sabadell and Cheltenham. The latter is a particularly important game as it is essentially a dress rehearsal for the first game of next season.

Yes, SteveK but do you ever take positives out of matches? Criticism means "making careful judgments about the good and bad qualities" You're "top-heavy" on the bad qualities, to say the least You mentioned neither of the 2 most recent goals Rovers scored,- both excellent against better defenders). UTG indeed.

Spiess1, I try to give a balanced view in match reports but topics are slightly different as you are commenting on the topic in question. ie the topic may be criticising players/Manager. If you want to comment on the goals then fine- the two goals we have sored were excellently taken and I think it is true to say that a lot of the goals scored in the last two seasons rank up with many of the goals I have seen in 50 years of following the gas. In fact watching Bodins goals is like a step back in time! The topics I have been involved in recently have been regarding signings, players retained and the ability of those players. Is saying a player is not good enough being negative or truthful? At the end of the day one players favourite may be anothers scapegoat. In truth there were not many positives to take from yesterdays game and just to "balance" your conception see DC's comments after the Mangotsfield friendly !!

Just a little reminder for everyone on here of a result last season before I hear anymore more of this "it was just a friendly crap" m.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35216450Yes it was just a friendly but the core of the team showed they are simply not good enough for the higher stages than Div2 and I'd even say Ollie Clarke struggled in Div2 last season at times. When I say the Core I mean the central defenders and central midfield in the first half. It was like a hot knife through butter time and time again. Can anyone remember when Beckford and Kandol of Leeds came to the Mem and virtually retired Byron Anyhony in one game? Well this will happen to McCrystal soon. We are still handing out awards to Sinclair as well for running around like a headless chicken. The second half team have us a chance and will give us a chance but I see no future at all in players like Kilgour, Macca, Sincs and Ollie Clarke now unless they are happy to get major splinters. Gosling, I give a chance but I also think some of the others need to take note of Luke James effort. This lad will tear up DC's team sheet and cause him headaches and I think Taylor and others have a game on their hands with Luke. Yes it was only a friendly and I'm glad it was, I'd rather getting battered in these games than against Cardiff. But what it showed us is we have some players who will struggle like they did at Pompey and Accrington and for 70 minutes at Northampton. I guess Swansea fans said it was only a cup game when Oxford stuck 3 past them last season 🤔 Ey up, I saw Bodin, Leadbitter and Gosling standing pretty near the bar in the clubhouse after the Salisbury game. I could've sworn I saw one of them mouth the words "delicious Corona". Think we might need to get our pitchforks out!

If Lockyer and Hartley are out - it is a real worry that the defensive unit will be based around McChrystal who certainly struggled at times in L2!!! I would certainly have preferred Parkes to McChrystal who I must add has always given of his best for the club.
