I`d rather have Luke James. He never stopped running and creating space for others, even if he never looked like scoring himself. From what I`ve seen, Nichols offers us practically nothing. Worst buy, since I forked out two hundred quid for that Morris Marina. Luke James WYHHB ?
I see Luke James was sub last night for a poor FGR team. Another one to add to the list of DC's striking 'greats' alongside Cunnington, Goldberg, Wall, White and Blissett.
Why do we keep getting strikers in who don't do what they are paid to do?
Nichols looks like a little boy playing with grown-ups

I think we are focusing on Nichols because of his lack of goals when Henbury makes a very good point. He's dropping deep most of the time to create something. He's a striker not a CAM or a RW.
He has to be an out and out striker. He got 13 goals in a poor Peterborough side last year so he has the credentials. Maybe a run alongside Gaffney in a reserve game would be a good idea, just to see how they shape up?
Even if we were 532 with Bola/Brown and Leads/Bodin I think would get him into the game more.

Then why buy him in the first place if you are not going to play him in his best position? Surely you would buy someone to fit your style of play.
You do wonder how much DC sees of his signings especially one who cost as much as him.

I honestly think we bottled out of signing a goal scorer because it was too expensive. I hope dc gives telford or dunwald a go at being that player, why not? Do you know who DC really wanted or are you just speculating? Seems to me he though Nichols was the answer or why else did he spend £250k to £300k to secure him? In interviews and this diamond club dinner Q&A dc has more than hinted that we could not compete in the transfer/wages market. with nichols its speculation but he would have known he wasnt an out and out goalscorer.

I travelled to and from the game last night with three Pompey season ticket holders who sit in the North stand - so they have a pretty good side pitch view. They all said, without any prompting, that it was when Nichols went off that a couple of the Pompey midfield players suddenly had loads of time and space which they didn't before and that's when they started to overrun us.
Whilst Nichols isn't scoring it did seem, last night at least, that he was performing a pretty effective role and he did see quite a lot of the ball. Bodin really seems to be our only goal threat at the moment though.

Anyone who says Nichols isn't a good player, obviously knows f**k all. He needs a big man next to him in a two. He's practically playing in the wing.

Because with the right players around him in the right formation he will get you goals. Right now we don't, so he is being asked to do something else which is play wide or drop deep. And he does it well, but he won't score goals playing there and that's not his fault.

Probably somebody said the same about LJ last season but now look where he is! IF TN is so good why does he never ever look like scoring, last night he was clean though on goal with a donkey of a CH chasing him but he was still tackled before he even got his shot in. I don't get why TN plays deep but Telford plays off the shoulder, are they told to play different roles by DC or just do it naturally? Just a pity BB didn't make it 1-1 when put clean though by Telford just after he came on.

The chance he wasted when put clean though in the first half as nothing to do with playing alongside Harrison. Regardless why sign a striker who can't play alongside EH or RG?

Spot on. Why buy a jigsaw puzzle with some pieces missing?
DC should have known in the summer what his favoured formation/style would be and got the players to fit that setup.
Trouble is we cant send this lad back now.

Nicholls said in one of his first interviews that his game is exactly this. But of course DC seems to have a project where he plays our number 9 on the wing. Last night Ellis played up front where he should be and Nicholls had a good game as a result. The comment from Pompey fans was also said by a couple of them as we came out. We dominated till Nicholls went off.

I see Nicholls as perfect for the roll Easter played so well - just behind the front two - a kind of playmaker - and upfront Gaffney first half - Ellis second half

Tom is quality, has great feet and will come good, he was a good finisher before, give him some chances and he will score. Now Ellis is not the scapegoat, our fans are lining him up, much better than James.

Well, if DC spent £300k knowing he would not score goals regularly then that was a bloody stupid signing. He could have looked at out of contract players and paid bigger wages and saved on the £300k transfer fee.

I like Tom and feel really sorry for him.
He should be up front next to a tall battlng no nonsense centre forward ... and playing in a 442.
Sadly the manager thinks 433 papers over his inability to attract summer quality ... even sadder it doesn't.
Please don't let the boo boys destroy a capable and willing young lad.
That said ... I would give Dom Telford a chance UPFRONT not on the wing FFS on Saturday.

Gaffney and Harrison up front together for the full 90 minutes for the next 5 games please, Beard somewhere on the pitch even if he's on crutches.

TN was put clean though on goal in the first half but didn't even manage a shot before he was tackled, somehow he's become another LJ, a striker who never even has a decent shot at goal let alone scores.

We are missing the skin shedding Serpant he was a good player for us BUT from what I seen of Dom Telford last Saturday we have a ready made replacement if only he would be given the chance!
