Hardly closer to London is it? What 30 minutes? We could have got a fee for Brown but have let our only LB go for free to a L1 play off rival. We’re not very good at negotiating the release of our players at all are we? He made it clear in his interviews that there were several factors in his decision to leave, not just the "closer to London" bit. I wonder why he had to get out of town quick.......... ?

We’re not very good at negotiating the release of our players at all are we? Can you negotiate the release of a player if they're out of contract and don't want to sign a new deal? Didn’t want to sign a new deal? He wasn’t even offered. He came to DC to tell him he wants to leave. In Lee’s words (roughly), “I think the gaffa was a bit surprised, I think he was expecting me to ask for a new contract if I’m honest” Why wasn’t it communicated earlier other than right at the death? Could we have sold him in January? Could we have had more time to prepare in scouting for the LB position? All I’m saying is we could have done more - this is now the 3rd player in a row we’ve been screwed over by contracts. If you’re happy with how our contract negotiations are going then fair play to you. But because we’ve poorly managed contracts we’ve lost Taylor (nearly for free) on he cheap, Bodin on the cheap and now Brown for free. And guess what, they al went to teams that finished above us in the table. Sounds like we need to improve in that area - I’d love to hear anyone’s thoughts if they think we’re doing so well on this topic

Que Sera Sera!sure its a good move for Lee financially, still think at league 1 level he is a good squad player but not automatic pick, dont know the competition at Pompey in his position, certainty not irreplaceable at Rovers , nice lad though good luck to him.

It wasn’t a case of poorly managing Brown’s contract it sounds like he would have wanted to move on even if he was still under contract for next season regardless if you remember the personal issues that he has had this season. You can’t compare it to Taylor or Bodin at all.

I believe he just wanted a fresh challenge. It was no disrespect to BRFC or us supporters...... Just felt it was time to go.
I wish him well and I will always see Browner as a Gas Legend.. He served us well

You can’t compare it to Taylor or Bodin at all. So you believe a Portsmouth newspaper that would obviously say he turned us down to join Pompey over Lee Brown who said he went to the managers room to say he wants to leave, whilst he confirmed he hadn’t been offered a new contract by saying “I think he was expecting me to ask for a new contract”? You’re just confirming my argument, if he was under contract and wanted to leave then great! We can get a few for him. No complaints at all! You can easily compare it to Bodin and Taylor, in fact Taylor was very very nearly the exact same by leaving us for Oxford for free. At the end of the day, we lost 3 first team starters to teams that all finished higher than us - they al went for cheap/free because they had the power with their contracts and twisted our arms to either release them, sell them for cheap (or go for free in summer) or put a tiny release clause in

Good for him. Gave us great service and showed loyalty when we needed him. I wish him all the best - apart from when we play them of course.

His wife was unhappy at living in Bristol and wanted to live in London. He can get a train to Portsmouth quicker than you can to Briz. Plus if only we had someone with lightening pace on the right we could skip past him. I suspect it will be the useless Nichols

I'm sure we can find better out in the market, all depends how deep our pockets are BOLA it is then ! He was the best left back in my 39 years of watching the Gas though. (I don't count Vaughan Jones as he was a right footed centre back who was asked to play left back). Bola didn't look as good as Lee Brown was when he was 20.

Think Brown was 21/22 when he first joined - LB was also playing in L2 when he first joined compared to Bola playing in L1. Judging from Notts County fans, Bola was excellent in L2 before he joined us. They’re very different players though tbf

We’re not very good at negotiating the release of our players at all are we? Unless we start signing new players on 10 year deals we are always going to risk losing them cheap, or free, as they approach the end of the usual 1 or 2 year deals. It's easy to say we should have players tied into contracts but how many would have wanted to give Bodin a long term when he completed his trial with us after coming back from a year long ACL injury or how many of us saw such massive potential in Taylor - someone who was previously playing out wide or sat on the bench at Forest Green? It works both ways and we benefit from signing players at the end of their existing deals - Upson being a recent example. We should just get used to it as that's the way football is these days. We may view players as business commodities but they are human beings, cleverer than many think and will only sign deals when it is in their interests to do so.
