Can’t imagine they would pay 550k for a player with 6 months left on his contract. I would think half that amount.

That doesn't stop the Evening Post, so I doubt if the Portsmouth paper is any different.

GC will have no choice if the board decide to accept a big offer, good business is good business! We could probably get two decent players using the fee and his wages. However, a negative move if we sell, but he may go for nothing at the end of this season.

What makes you think that the board would reinvest the money? 2. What makes you think we wouldn’t get 10% upfront and wait another year for the rest? 3. Do you honestly believe if the money was reinvested that we would actually be able to sign any players in time, never mind of similar quality to replace him 4. I’d rather be in L1 next season and let Sercombe go for free that get £250k and be in league 2 (this is on the basis that Bodin who is a much better player went for 450k - so there isn’t a chance that Sercombe would go for the same money, nevermind more)

The present squad is relegation doomed and we will have no money in the transfer window ( loans and under 21's only ) . However: Sercombe is a player who can create and unlock defences. If we keep him we have a fighting chance as there is 8 teams fighting for 4 places ( 50% -50 % chance). If he goes I am 80-90% we will be relegated.

I clearly remember during the summer there was talk of sercombe moving to Pompey on here, nothing in the press about it then though. Obviously nothing happened as he's still here but I do wonder as to why the possibility of a move has re-emerged. Seems a bit more than coincidence....

Presumably it's all a merry go round of money.
If we sell Ellis for £700k and get £70k upfront and the rest over a year, we can bid for two £350k players, paying £35k x 2 upfront and the rest over a year.
I know we won't spend 100% of fees received, but that's just as an illustration. Payment by instalments isn't an issue if everyone is at it.

And so it begins, Ellis’ transfer fee starts to drop.
Said it a few times in he past that there are some golden rules somehow on this forum:
1. Transfer fee of players we sign, who turn out to be good, will stay the same or decrease.
2. Transfer fee of players we sign, who turn out to be bad, will always increase.
3. Transfer fee of players we sell, unless the fee is officially announced, will always drop as time goes past.

It makes the £3m we paid for Nichols compared to the paltry £50k we got for Ellis really rub salt in the wounds. And don't get me started on Bodin for 20k!!
