So if the player was always getting the same Salary the absolutely no way was he ever coming to us so why did Starnes even make a phone call? What was the point of any of it? From what I’ve heard it was quite close to being done. Charlton came in late and, despite their offer being less attractive to Preston than ours, Stockley wanted to play in a team at the top end of the table. If I was in his shoes I would have done exactly the same. Perhaps we should never aspire to make decent signings and not make those “phone calls” in case some other team comes in at a later stage with a better offer? Who did you hear that from?

Pretty sure it was reported by Sam Frost in the Post.

According to the statement released by Charlton there were lots of clubs interested and also they had the deal sewn up and Stockley training by the 21st Jan....surely an experienced CEO like Starnes would have known we were done when Charlton came in as a minimum which you would assume would have been at least a few days before.
My point is Starnes spouts off about how he knew the squad wasn’t right and how we definitely needed a striker in January and then f**ks it up and blames Tisdale.
Does anyone really think Tisdale sulked after Stockley said no and didn’t put any other names forward?? We had a week and a half left of a 4 week transfer window!

If your manager tells you he is getting a player that has previously played for him though then you would probably believe your manager. The mistake they made was letting this rumble on for weeks on end, they should have given Tisdale a deadline and if stockley hadn’t signed by then move on to the next target.

Who knows what discussions happened behind closed doors other than what has been said publicly. I think Starnes said we tried someone else (was it Hylton?) and there may have others? If Tisdale didn’t think any of the available strikers would have improved us I don’t see how a CEO can then just sign players of his own choosing when the manager would be unlikely to play them. The issue goes back way before the January window - barely anyone thought we went into the season with either enough quality or number of striker options and that was down to the manager. That was the big issue, a failure by all parties to rectify it in January just compounded a long standing problem and was the main reason for our relegation.

If the BP are reporting Garner wanted Piggot to replace JCH that pretty much dispels the myth that Garner was happy with 3 strikers. Seems to me targets were selected in both windows. If Starnes was doing the negotiating it sits with him. CEO takes responsibility.

Assuming the BP weren't just fed that story by Garner as Starnes hasn't confirmed there's any truth in the story whereas he has confirmed that we were in for Stockley, if Garner was interested in Piggot and he was out of the equation then why didn't he look at alternatives rather than sign Liddle and Kioki. Although why was Garner letting TW deal with transfers, it doesn't sound like Barton's going to let TW stand in his way having apparently already lined up 3 deals.
