I have re-joined after a long absence to put on record how disappointed I am at the recruitment this summer. Despite it being obvious to anyone with half a brain giving injury prone 35 year old Rodman a new contract was simply an awful financial/business decision. Was obvious after last few years he would hardly play and shock horror he is on the treatment table again wasting a wage that could be spent better elsewhere!
The signings of fellow 30 somethings such as Hughes, Coutts and Pitman so far appear to be an utter failure and waste of money. Again too old and completely past it!
That brings us to deadline day with the utterly disgraceful signings of Clarke(36) Whelan(37/38) and Brown (32). Already Clarke has done his hamstring and no doubt Whelan won't be too far behind him and I just find it incredible that Wael sanctioned Joey to sign such a load of old and past it players when the wages could of been much better spent on younger players who will actually stay fit and be able to play with the energy that you need to be successful in modern day football. With Coutts, Grant, Finlay and others Whelan remains the most pointless and baffling signing of all time for me. Would rather give Hargreaves/Mehew a game than sticking someone who is nearly 38 in the heart of the midfield.
I really wanted Joey to succeed but just don't understand what is going through his head at the moment or in recent months. Seems to have signed a load of his mates with no thought of a long term plan which is frustrating as he seems an intelligent guy. Need a YOUNGER consistent formation and team and play on the front foot. Plus potentially the best player Thomas is not even being named in the squad at the moment.
Very worrying times at the moment and I just don't see where we go from here unless Joey loses his stubbornness and admits he has made some huge errors in the transfer market and goes with more legs and energy in the team.
For what its worth I would go for something like this tomorrow. (Shame Nicholson is injured)
Belshaw
Hoole Taylor Harries/Kilgour Anderton
Finlay(c) Grant
Anderson Evans Thomas
Collins
Subs - Saunders, Hughes, Pitman, Brown, Hargreaves, (Ward)
If not going our way 2nd half get Pitman or Saunders on for Grant and go two up with just one holding midfielder! UTG!!!!

You couldn’t make it up.
Too young and inexperienced under the previous regime …….l
Then
Too old and injury prone
It’s really actually laughable where we have ended up.
Anyway it is what it is and let’s get behind them tomorrow.

I believe if a different manager recruited the players JB has , we had the injuries we have, we played the football we are playing now JB would have been very critical of said manager. We have been told everything prior to JB’s time was unprofessional, not fit for purpose and negligent.
This looks like I’m ‘having a go’ but I’m not having a go because it is JB but I would say the same whoever it was. I believed what JB said and that he would fix it but I just can’t see the evidence. Not just the way the team is playing but many of the things he criticised previous managers for.
Perhaps his ideas need time to bed in but, if you take the example of strikers, he nailed previous managers for not bringing one in but we have Saunders playing wing back, Clarke out and Pitman injured. Surely he is self aware enough to realise this and accept that he has done no better.
I’d just like to have some light at the end of the tunnel to look forward to!

I think the dad's army narrative is a bit harsh when you consider how many of the signings we have made are under 30, Taylor, Spence, Clarke (T), Anderson, Saunders, Collins, Finley, Thomas, Anderton, & Evans. We can argue (quite rightly imo) that the balance of the squad isn't quite right but we certainly haven't recruited a team of pensioners. I don't think anyone would have argued in the summer we lacked experience last year and on paper Hughes, Coutts & Pitman brought that through the spine of the team, where we seem to have been found out is relying on L Clarke & Pitman as our only options for the no.9 role.

To be fair, Rodman broke his foot. Hardly a recurring injury.

Surprised Rodman got a new contract with his injury record Probably more a reward for helping out last season, if Wael's content to offer him a contract on that basis he's at liability to do so, he's hardly taking another player's place as we've still a position free in the squad. As far as Clarke, JB's confirmed in today's pre-match presser that he was the only option we could offered/was available.

As it is in any walk of life those empowered to make decisions stand or fall on the consequences of those decisions. In JB'S view the squad he inherited were not good enough for him and he has set about a complete overhaul. I am desperate for him to succeed at Rovers but though some of his signings looked good on paper there is very little evidence that the current squad is any better than the last one despite playing at a lower level, we seem to have the same problems, mistake prone at the back, lack of creativity in midfield and lightweight upfront, coupled with a recurring theme of injuries to key players, it does not look good, JB, i really want it to work for you but i think time is running out and even the most patient fans , like myself need to see some sign of this squad 'gelling' as they say, the clock is ticking, good luck1

Yes the dad’s army narrative isn’t true. Just as the youngsters narrative under BG was untrue. We had plenty of experience last season and in BG’s teams. Just as we have plenty of youngsters now. The problem with both is that no manager since GC has been able to mould the players, whatever their age, into a team capable of winning matches consistently. Nothing to do with age more to do with ability and quality, or the managers all being unable to get them to start playing together. UTG!
