Well one Banned word half season and one totally awesome half season. I think you find that makes it a hell of a season. From the depths of despair to absolutely joy. One of the best seasons I’ve seen in watching the gas in over 50 years. Life is richer for experiences. Agree in fairness; the fact we were sooooo bad at the start made the end even more incredible. I mean, if it was a movie it would genuinely have been criticised for being too OTT and unrealistic. I mean, 7-0 on the final day - as if.

I don't suppose this debate is ever going to go away and i am loathe to add any more fuel to the fire BUT i will anyway as fans might be interested. My nephew is a personal trainer with associated gym/fitness premises and one day 3 or 4 chaps turned up to check it out asking questions about differing methods of fitness training etc and to make use of the facilities. My nephew did not know who they were, is not a Gas head ( apart from that he is a top lad!) but was very impressed with the groups demeanour, interest, and desire to dig deep into the subject of fitness and training. He got on great with them and suffice to say he was not a little surprised to discover that in fact he was dealing with non other than Mr Joey Barton and a couple of his staff. He thought and thinks they are top blokes and in JB'S case the complete opposite to the character often described in the media, make of it what you will, but most of us have formed opinions of JB based on what we have read in the press, my nephew had the chance to form an opinion on personal experience and the conclusions drawn are very, very different. As for my own view, i thought and think his appointment was a very good one based on Football reasons, he used to annoy the hell out of me as a player, and i was a little concerned he may get wound up by opponents and respond to the detriment of Rovers but those fears have proved to be unfounded and having read his book i had a much better understanding of 'what made Joey Barton'. I now believe JB is on to something with us, has a great working relationship with Wael, he gets Rovers, so hold on to your hats Gas heads, Rovers are on the up, hope those who still doubt him come on board and wished they had the opportunity to judge JB on personal experience like my nephew ,not on what the media portray, up the Rovers.

I think JB is (was?) a hothead with serious anger problems. Quite possibly for good reason. I think the issue with those type of tendencies is you can literally change who you are in an instant. I genuinely sympathise. I see red from time to time but thankfully have always just about managed to stop myself getting violent. Hopefully he's found methods to deal with anger - if so he has every chance of leading a happier life without any more violent episodes. The reason I'm making this point is it does explain why there are almost 2 versions of him - the nice Joey many claim to have met/spoke too and the one that - when pushed too far - resembles someone completely different.

I don't think any manager or player should have a contract longer than 3 years. Well there you have it, Wael, the majority share holder / owner of the club, is saying he wants Joey to be the manager of Bristol Rovers F C for the next 4 years. He has been totally unambiguous, up front, and to all those who have a problem with his decision, either suck it up, or move on. Simple. So now all those who want to follow Joey can crack-on and look forward to the open game, those that don't are free to make alternative arrangements. Utg

It’s possible to be pro-Barton, anti-Barton or like probably the vast majority of Gasheads, to see good and bad in him. It’s possible to take a moral stance or it’s possible to not give a f**k about his past. All Gasheads are welcome!

My comment was more about the length of time of any contract in a league 1 football club. The danger is with this length of contract is what happens if we get relegated again? We would be stuck paying league one salaries with league 2 income. Hopefully in these long term contracts there are promotion amd relegation clauses.

I assume like DC's probably got at PV there'll be performance clauses and if JB fails to meet them he'll be just paid some agreed compensation (6 months severance pay?), likewise, JB's probably included an escape clause should a Championship etc side come in for him.

What's the difference between lg1 and lg2 income? When we went down, the figure being banded around was about £500k I thought we lost £1m in TV money alone, plus there's the lower attendances and, I assume, advertising income. Although if we did get relegated under Barton I can't imagine he'd stay as our manager.

For all the barrack room and stay away lawyers, Wael has today firmly said Joey is definitely the man he wants to take the club forward, and he is backing him, for the next four years, at least. I hope I’m not seen as a ‘barrack room’ or ‘stay away lawyer’ having continued to attend and praised JB throughout last season but I am surprised by this extension given what Wael said about what would happen to any employee found guilty of that type of offence with the charge still there. Either he knows something we don’t, a clause has been put in the contract or something else the fans are not privy to. No problems with any of those btw. Given what happened last season I can see the reason for it in footballing terms and the club protecting its assets but I am surprised. As you said Wael is obviously backing JB and understandably so although I expect he has his toes and fingers crossed. My hard hat is on. 😉 UTG!

You have to look at it from Both sides: JB Should be getting a pay increase with the extension and a longer payoff period than he currently has. Rovers get a bit of certainty, at least he won't be able to go to one of the bigger clubs in our league (you would hope) and the potential for compensation is a higher league club comes in for him. I would also hope that there is a clause that he cannot go the the other lot in Bristol within 2/3 years of leaving. It's a great deal if we are on the up. Not so great if we stagnate or continue the up down with league 2 that we have been doing for the past 15 years.
