Was at game with my lad, an old footballing cliche comes to mind, men v boys! Have to agree with with earlier post, didn't think they were that clever but they played us at our own game and we didn't have an answer tonight! In my lads opinion we had too many trier's, not enough quality. Lets hope this is a minor blip?

They were quicker, sharper, stronger and technically better than us all over the pitch and thoroughly deserved their win.
I don't think any of our players would get in their starting 11 after watching that tonight and shows just how much better the top teams are in L1.
We didn't have the ability to cope with their high press. They made us look very poor.
In games like that you really need your front man to hold the ball to help the team get up the pitch but I don't think Marquis managed that once all night. Early days but I haven't been impressed with him so far.
That said, I don't really want to single anyone out because none of our players performed well tonight. I don't think any warrant more than 4/10.
Another very tough test on Saturday and unless we make a couple of very good signings before then it's hard to see anything other than another heavy defeat.
If we needed one, that was certainly a wake-up call.

Try to build a jigsaw puzzle with the wrong pieces and you wont get far. Thats todays rovers team. You cant get away with bodged together teams away at clubs like Barnsley. There were a lot of poor performances tonight . Hooles first 20mins being the low point. The blame however, in my view falls squarely at the managers door tonight. A stupid team selection. Barnsley played pretty well . Rovers had one of worst performances for a long long time. We really need 3 midfielders a couple of fullbacks and a right sided centreback. The failure to bring in replacements in midfield for LT,SN and EA is glaring. Putting strikers in their roles is NOT the answer. It weakens the team severely. Hopefully JB will learn a big lesson tonight. Loading your team with out of position pkayers will lead to failure. Wasn’t it one change from the extremely impressive showing on Saturday?🙃Hardly stupid in my book. Saturday there were warning signs but oxford played pretty poorly. Even then they exploited the wings a lot. Play a rightback at centreback. A right midfielder at rightback A striker in right midfield A striker in left midfield You could tell it was a bodge by the formation and player changes made through the game. The team was unbalanced and Barnsley exploited it.

Going by tonight’s display Barton has lots to do if we are to compete in this league. Fair play to Barnsley they deserved to win handsomely and will probably finish in the top six. Of course going behind to a soft third minute goal didn’t help , but Barnsley didn’t allow us to settle and dominated throughout. I do think the weather suited Barnsley’s style better than ours , but that’s no excuse we should have been able to stop them imposing their game on us. I think only Bellshaw l comes out with any credit tonight.

The night gets worse, post gig at the fleece I’m stuck on the platform at TM after a cancelled service next to a dozen Sh1!heads discussing the ins and outs of their s***house club. There is no escape.

Just got back. My son’s first experience of the Gas losing. Obviously we can have no complaints as we were second best all over the park. The only positives I can think of are:
We didn’t have anyone sent off
Connolly looked by far the best of the back four.
Whelan was a class above when he came on. We really need him at the moment - can he play a full 90? Or at least start and give us 60?
Rossiter still looks rusty but got more minutes under his belt and had a couple of moments which suggested better to come.
Otherwise, everyone was below par. I agree totally about needing a big centre back alongside Connolly. We lack presence at the back. Defence is a real worry with players bedding in and Gibbons injured. I like Hoole but I’m not sure he’s solid enough to play week-in week-out at this level just yet, even at right back. Gordon had a poor game and Gibson also looked shaky. They deserve time, though. Anderson was his usual industrious self but the way he plays in a 4 also leaves us open. We couldn’t get Evans on the ball in the first half and he’s so important to us. When that second goal got deflected in it had the feeling of not being our night and it turned out that way. Fans were great and very supportive to the end. On to Pompey. Fear the worst after tonight but you wouldn’t be writing off this squad in a hurry. UTG!

Not long got back (luckily not having to travel all the way back to Bristol). Putting it down to a bad day at the office. Poor performance, Barnsley dominated. Too many poor passes and poor decision making. That said, nothing went our way, second goal was a flukey deflection, third was one of those wonder strikes you get now now and again and we didn’t get any decisions from the ref. and nothing seemed bounce for us either. Sadly the pitch was in great condition and they must have good drainage as was hoping by half time the weather was going to come to our rescue - sadly not!

Poor performance all round where we were ‘lucky’ to come away with a 3-0 defeat. Barnsley didn’t allow us any time on the ball - they closed us down all over the pitch which resulted in a lot of long hopeful diagonal balls which always seemed to find Barnsley players. One of those games where it seemed Barnsley had a least two more players on the pitch than us, A lot of worked to be done still in the loan/transfer market - but mid table after four games is what I’d take now come season end.

Haven’t read this thread so FWIW: That was disappointing and we were second best from the start. The conditions were the direct opposite from Saturday and we never came to terms with them. Not sure anyone played really well though Anderson and Finley never gave up and Finley esp tried to get us going. I thought Marquis put in a shift but his first touch was poor and he was unable to keep any ball played up to him. But again he never gave up. Tonight effort wasn’t enough. But although we lost, and lost easily it’s the first time that’s happened and it will be a good wake up call and we will clearly need to recruit a few more if we want to compete. No complacency after that match! In truth Barnsley were just too good and deserved their win. It was a bad night all round so I guess we just move on and hope we play better on Saturday. When we aren’t quite at the races and the other team is in this league, then we will find it very difficult. Just like tonight. UTG! ps. How has the Oxford match thread got only 16/17 pages after 4 days yet this one where we lose has 16 pages in less than a day? Strange isn’t it? I mean, it isn't strange at all. Home game in good weather on Saturday = more people at the game and less on the forum, Tuesday night trip all the way to Barnsley in sh*t weather = less people at the game and more people on the forum.

The chasm In performance was so glaring it was akin to watching an uncontacted tribe with spears and slings take on the might of the Roman army in full pomp.
I think Barton should have agreed to give Barnsley the papayas and guavas and beads after 15 minutes and the massacre could have been averted.

At the end of the day, I think two things combined to mean we had a bit of a drubbing.
1) Barnsley are just seemingly better than us 2) Despite that we were well below par
Obviously we're not the finished article which also doesn't help, but even if we did have the required depth in quality on the bench to change the game, we probably may have still had too much to do by the time we'd have utilised them.
It's possible Saturday took a lot out of us. The strange thing was the long balls - it was so constant you almost wonder if that was the actual game plan? You'd think not, but given how consistent it was you can't help but wonder. If it was intentional it's also another explanation as to the under par performance as the players (as demonstrated) would have been far less comfortable playing this alien way.
No need for overreaction and I don't really think I've seen any. Barnsley will likely finish above us and are clearly a good side - it just underlined (not as if there was any doubt) we still require several new additions.
As long as we get the additions we require, I'll be confident of a decent first season back in L1 (let's be honest, middtable would be a very good first season back - anything more would be an enormous bonus). If we don't, then I will panic; but given there's still time there's no point in panicking yet.
Onwards and upwards (hopefully 😁)

Watched on ifollow. To many players not at it for various reasons mainly Barnsley completely outplaying us for most of the game. Cant fault the players for effort just got to accept they were better and we will get better with quality additions. Joey would have learnt a lot about his squad tonight and its probably a good good kick up the backside for the whole squad. No sending offs a positive and hopefully a couple in by Saturday. Thought Luke Thomas was decent winning a lot of first contacts and finding pockets that stretched the play, would love him back but that ship has probably sailed. Starting to think we need a tank of a CB that can be dominant in the air we look fragile in the air from set pieces and long balls. I cant be to negative we are clearly lacking bodies and still finding our way in the division. Get in 1 x big CB 2 x Winger 1 x CAM and maybe another striker and things will start to be a little easier for JB. I would have took 6 points from 4 at the start of the season given how slow we have been in the transfer window. Really hopeful that we can get in some quality rather than players just to fill up squad places.

Very good point regarding it maybe being for the best - had we have won tonight there's a risk we may have felt we could get away without the bulk of the additions required and that would have been a disaster. Last night truly exposed where the weaknesses lie and will have acted as a timely reminder for everyone to get their ass in gear and bring in the players required before the window slams shut.

The suggestions, on here, are 4 or 5 new players in, so who's being dropped?

The suggestions, on here, are 4 or 5 new players in, so who's being dropped? We need competition for places and definitely need cover Last night we just seemed to use subs with no real plan because players aren’t available for like for like swaps We need cover at Left back and centre back, maybe even a centre back who can go straight in We need more options in the wide areas so we can attack teams from 60 mins on We probably need another CDM as cover And you could argue another striker It’s more about us having more options over a long season. The core of the team is there, it just needs help!! UTG

As regards the long balls, I would suggest that was because of the high press that they did all night, not giving our backline any time to pass the ball around, running out of options and just wellying it forward.

look we got stuffed by a team who were 2 leagues higher than us last season, it happens now and again and to most other teams, pretty sure Joe we will learn from it. At the moment it looks like we are a mid table team who will win some lose some and that will do for me this season, about this time last season we got stuffed at Exeter, cue melt down and Joe's now famous quote, has he said anything yet?!

I think we are still finding our feet in this division. Forest Green game came a bit soon for us. Everything went for us and it clicked at Burton. The Oxford game showed we can compete at this level against a decent team at home. Then last night was a long away trip in terrible weather, things went against us and Barnsley were on song. Hopefully a couple more singings through the door, things will settle down and we'll find a bit of consistency. UTG

The suggestions, on here, are 4 or 5 new players in, so who's being dropped? Have we replaced Taylor, Nicholson or Anderson? Evans needs cover. Is Kilgour good enough for L1? Is Loft good enough for L1? Anderson needs cover. Our pressing first contact style of play will mean suspensions and red cards especially in the center of the park. We have a first team coach getting more minutes than he probably wants. for me its not a question of who's getting dropped its a question of who's having a rest. Like i said previously just hope we bring in quality and not just body's to fill up the squad places.
