Beaten by a better team, tactically, physically and quality. Won't be the only time it happens this season. Enjoy the ride!

Watched on ifollow...
As much as you can say anything, we were taught a proper lesson of how our ar$e got handed back to us last night....wow..... Barnsley played some slick football, easy on the eye and thoroughly deserved win and should have scored more.
Out played. Out thought. Out counter thought. Out finished. Out passed. Out structured.
What a capitulation!?
Credit for us still continuing to try, and trying different tactics, and in second half swapping things about and at least getting somewhere like cohesion (the game was already over by then), but this should serve as a giant wake up call that there's a huge step between where we were before GC left and credible challengers, and where we are now .... 2.5 years behind.
Excellent play by Barnsley, all credit to them. They really should have scored more...

The suggestions, on here, are 4 or 5 new players in, so who's being dropped? You do realise there's such a thing as a bench, right?

That sounds dodgy to me!! So Grant is more injury prone than the other injury prone players?? Rossiter is ok to play because he is slightly less likely to break down Coutts is ever so slightly less risky Grant however will more than likely fall to pieces at the first tackle and so needs to stay at home!! I hope to be proven wrong but he looks like a player who will spend more time on the injury table than on the pitch. UTG

We were not at the races and two - nil down at half time and the suggestion was we are short of players. Think we are short of alternative games, Coutts, Rossiter, Gibson all need game time but last night proved cannot do it during a league game.

Only just able to bring myself to come back! I am sure lots will have said it better, but Barnsley were great and did not give us one seconds peace in the entire 90 minutes. Harried and chased us for everything and then looked good in possession. Would have liked to have seen a shift to Hoole at RB and Kilgour or Gibson at CB after about 10 minutes, but no need to panic. We know we need to strengthen, we just got a little carried away this week! Nervous about Pompey, hopefully we have a game plan that works

Nervous about Pompey, hopefully we have a game plan that works At the end of the day our record away from home against the so called bigger teams is absolutely shocking. Aside from the Ipswich game a couple of years ago, you probably have to go back to Southampton in 2009 for the last time we beat one of these teams! Portsmouth is no different, we never get a result there. I'll be surprised if we get any points this season away to the likes of Sheff Weds, Derby, Charlton etc. That's just the way it has been for us over the last 10/15 years.

They were clearly the better side, but gifting them an opening goal like that just gave us a mountain to climb, throw in a deflected goal and it was game over. There were errors all over the pitch and that was probably down to their tactics and pressing. I thought that we looked better with Whelan on the pitch, he kept it much more than any other player. No doubt we would have looked at videos of them beforehand, but that game needs to be analysed in full so that we can try and come up with a formation and game plan to combat teams like that, even if it means going something like 5 at the back and 2 holding midfielders and being more negative and disruptive and playing on the break in a game.

Decent enough start 6 points from 4 games. Looking at our next 4 games I fancy us to take another 6 points which would leave us mid table with a 5th of the season gone and I think we’d all be happy enough with that.

Watched on i follow. To many players not at it for various reasons mainly Barnsley completely outplaying us for most of the game. Cant fault the players for effort just got to accept they were better and we will get better with quality additions. Joey would have learnt a lot about his squad tonight and its probably a good good kick up the backside for the whole squad. No sending offs a positive and hopefully a couple in by Saturday. Thought Luke Thomas was decent winning a lot of first contacts and finding pockets that stretched the play, would love him back but that ship has probably sailed. Starting to think we need a tank of a CB that can be dominant in the air we look fragile in the air from set pieces and long balls. I cant be to negative we are clearly lacking bodies and still finding our way in the division. Get in 1 x big CB 2 x Winger 1 x CAM and maybe another striker and things will start to be a little easier for JB. I would have took 6 points from 4 at the start of the season given how slow we have been in the transfer window. Really hopeful that we can get in some quality rather than players just to fill up squad places. Very good point regarding it maybe being for the best - had we have won tonight there's a risk we may have felt we could get away without the bulk of the additions required and that would have been a disaster. Last night truly exposed where the weaknesses lie and will have acted as a timely reminder for everyone to get their ass in gear and bring in the players required before the window slams shut. Agree, but we have Jones and Greenslade who are more than creative and I don't see why during this hectic start to the season they are not used a) To rotate wide and forward players, even use as Attacking midfielders because they will both put in more than a shift! and B) Give us a another dimension at running and attacking with the ball and I know there are Goals in Both of them. Silly to get the check book out when the answer may be under Barton,s nose! And silly to run one of our aging Strikers ragged in the first month as 1 goal in 5 games is hardly going to get us up the Table.

Excellent play by Barnsley, all credit to them. They really should have scored more... Was coming on to post exactly this ... Spot on!! Joey has 14 days to get the players in to make us competitive .... it's not about filling a bench we need at least two maybe three starters who can help us compete in this league. Massive wake up call last night ... i hadn't expected much at the start other than a workmanlike performance and effort - didn't see anything like it - let's be honest it was woeful. I think some may have placed themselves into the managers thinking for all the wrong reasons after that. In my opinion Connolly still struggles without a force alongside him - that should not be Luca just yet. Apart from the fab free kick against Burton Evans I think has been poor for his standard - average distribution and he didnt touch the ball last night until the 28th minute!! - Needs to be involved more. Coutts was a shambles - running round kicking everyone and diving .... Marquis cant hold up traffic let alone balls being fizzed to him over head height from 50 yards Findley gave everything and you could see he was frustrated ... Belly ... Would like to see that first goal from another angle as his positioning looked off - Third goal was hit hard but from a long way out and he was late going down I thought. Harvey Saunders and Harry Anderson ran a lot - Harry is not a Right Back and is wasted there - Harvey maybe better as an impact sub but again the passes to him were shocking. Fully expecting the same on Saturday unless there is a drastic improvement in attitude and effort from our boys and more nouse from JB who set us up poorly last night.

Ideally Connolly is the RCB with Luca as his cover. Gibson (or new) as the LCB Hoole can then play RB, or right of a 2 or 3 in CB when needed Against the tougher opposition, Hoole and Connolly are not the answer right now. And I really like both players!
But, possibly similar to the FGR game, it was probably lost in midfield. Need Coutts back to full speed and Rossiter looks like a lot of potential, needs to stay injury free. Until then, Whelan will play more than expected!

Last night we were totally out played, and we will be again; we will also win matches. This season is very much about first and foremost staying in the league. Last night, although we did play well, the travelling (443) supporters clapped and cheered the team off the pitch, brilliant. We go again on Saturday. Utg

Haven’t read this thread so FWIW: That was disappointing and we were second best from the start. The conditions were the direct opposite from Saturday and we never came to terms with them. Not sure anyone played really well though Anderson and Finley never gave up and Finley esp tried to get us going. I thought Marquis put in a shift but his first touch was poor and he was unable to keep any ball played up to him. But again he never gave up. Tonight effort wasn’t enough. But although we lost, and lost easily it’s the first time that’s happened and it will be a good wake up call and we will clearly need to recruit a few more if we want to compete. No complacency after that match! In truth Barnsley were just too good and deserved their win. It was a bad night all round so I guess we just move on and hope we play better on Saturday. When we aren’t quite at the races and the other team is in this league, then we will find it very difficult. Just like tonight. UTG! ps. How has the Oxford match thread got only 16/17 pages after 4 days yet this one where we lose has 16 pages in less than a day? Strange isn’t it? I mean, it isn't strange at all. Home game in good weather on Saturday = more people at the game and less on the forum, Tuesday night trip all the way to Barnsley in sh*t weather = less people at the game and more people on the forum. Part of the reason perhaps but the length of the Oxford at 16/17 pages still one of the shortest MDTs I think. So yes, I think it is strange. I appreciate you don’t. Oxford one of the better teams and it was a good win. But overall not important. UTG!

Nice ground at Oakwell.Proper stadium. Ellis scored for Vale but they are struggling. Will AK start Sat? Prefer going to Barnsley in August than Feb but that was poor.Collins out of sorts. Wake up call so hope we move on quickly.

Only seen the highlights but one goal poor marking/defending Hoole let his man run, one wicked deflection and one worldy.
At the other end not enough chances created and in the middle we just didn’t get near controlling the centre of the pitch.
Belly kept the score down.
I think the Hoole centre back experiment needs to end and it’s time to look at Gibson.
Midfield and forwards will have better days at the office.
