The key word in your post is 'potentially'. I saw him pre-season and also in a few D.S. games. He isn't the finished article (hard to see how he could be) but there's definitely potential and he's worth a place in a matchday squad.

'A club with its heart ripped out'
More like a club on life-support. Will the plug be pulled or will there be a miraculous recovery? In the meantime we all stand around fearing the worst and hoping for the best.

Two interesting points for me in that article: Lee Bowyer rates Tom Lockyer as a leader, and also rates his passing ability - Two things he was often singled out for on this forum as not being very good at! One difficulty when assessing a player's performance is we don't know what the manager has instructed him to do. I watched a training session at Cribbs once and Tom was with one of the coaches and all he was asked to do time after time was to pump a long ball from RCB position out to the left wing.

I was surprised by the use, or non-use, of subs by both managers. Usually when a team goes down to 10 (or 9!)men their manager makes a sub or two to somehow compensate by putting fresh legs on. Their players were sent off in the 48th and 57th minutes yet they only brought one sub on in the 75th minute. It's testament though to their fitness that they threatened right to the end. At the same time when a team gets player/s sent off there's an argument for the other team to get fresh legs on to really stretch the opposition. However we brought subs on in the 72nd, 75th and 89th minutes. I'm getting the impression that GC doesn't like making substitutions!

Very disappointing - typical Rovers. Neat and tidy in MF, but sloppy defending gave them goals. Fair few chances, but none put away; though their 'keeper made some good saves. I'm told Cambridge don't have a DS, so this was a defeat against the U18s of team 18th in L2. First goal ball bobbing around in 6yd box, failed to clear. Second, Menayese sent poor ball to LB. Ball intercepted and goal followed. Plus points: Tomlinson, playing advanced MF, worked tirelessly and looked our most attcking dangerous player. Some silly petty tackles though would have got him booked in another match. Hodges played first half CB, then in second half swapped with Hoole to go RB. Looked very comfortable there. Could be good cover and certainly a match day squad player. Mehew and Hargreaves worked hard with little success. Moore didn't have much luck but looks threatening whenever he has the ball Not so good: Kelly had torrid first half; making wrong choices and hitting misplaced passes. Was subbed first. Widdrington. Wants to be noticed (socks around ankles), but too many wasted free kicks and shots from distance. Van Stappershoef. Not much to do but many of his place kicks went straight out.

Went to Spurs last week, the whole stadium is cashless. Would be hilarious at Rovers. Apparently ditto the Oval.

I’ve read a lot about why the crowd was down yesterday and the answer was simple. By removing pay on the turnstile you will lose 10-15% of your match day attendance. I have seen it horse race meetings around the country. Not everyone is computer savvy or has a printer to print home or lives within a short drive to the ground to buy in the shop. Bring back pay on the day at the turnstile ASAP. Personally I think the scrapping of the early-bird ticket offer had more of an effect. Agreed. Once you've bought a ticket midweek you then plan around going to the match. Leaving the decision to the day of the match allows for all sorts of reasons to crop up as to why you could spend your time elsewhere.

With seven substitutes on the bench you'd think that a manager would try to change
the course of a game his team is losing or heading for a draw.
Against Blackpool GC used only two subs, in the 55th and 84th minutes; and against Wycombe, apart from the enforced sub in the 8th minute, he brought the other two subs on in the 72nd and 85th minutes. I'd suggest that three of those substitutions were too late to influence the respective games.
Brave managers make half-time substitutions, or make changes around 60 minutes. On Saturday the midfield was crying out for some variety, and Nicholls was....... ......being Nicholls. Substitutions were made far too late.
