Amazing! Well done all three on 30+ scores. That takes some doing. Particularly well done to Russ. 6 maximums in a week must be a record too?

In what way? Given the comments on their first goal how would our goal be reviewed if it was scored against us? As it was for us the consensus is that it was a great finish. Two defenders too close leaving their's unmarked. Great finish, I don't think the keeper could have done much about either goal. I think that the second goal, whilst you could argue Vale was beaten a bit too easily, is all about the game being very stretched at that point and maybe we were a bit naive and lost our shape as a team? Definitely don’t see it as a keeper error, and Cox was unlucky with the first goal, when he made a great save. Another day that goes out for a corner instead of hitting the post.

Cox let in two goals neither of which he could have been expected to save. We missed six gilt edged chances all of which would probably have ended in the net with a striker like JCH. If not JCH we would have to pay similar amounts to get any other striker who scores goals regularly. Agents are going to try to get the best deal for their man-thats not being greedy-that is their job. If you want a decent striker ten you have to pay a decent amount. Be fair we paid a record fee for Tilson in 1989 and in 2024 we are expecting to pay less to get a goalscoring forward- we are in cloud cuckoo land. There's people on this forum that would also have put those chances away. However you need to get there first and there's no guarantee that JCH gets into the same positions as Thomas or Brown because he's a different player! He would also create other types of chances but tackle back less.. The problem with both the chances, presuming they are the chances I’m thinking of, is that both players are very left footed. They were much easier to convert had they gone with their right. Thomas (first half) had to cut back inside onto his left and Brown (second half) had to snatch at it to hit it with his preferred foot. A quality finisher, even at this level, would have had enough confidence in his weaker foot.

What I found odd was when asked in pre-season who he thought would score our first goal of the season, Barton replied ‘Beefy’, which suggested that he had full faith in him at the time as a first team starter. By the end of August he’d been shipped off on loan. It’s a quick amount of time to completely change your mind about someone and made me wonder if there might have been a bit more to it than form. Thought Connolly looked decent yesterday, didn't put a foot wrong. It’s good to have him back. Playing every week the last few months has obviously helped him as well. With MT preferring to play three at the back he will get a lot more opportunities now compared to under Barton who played just the two CB's. I think Taylor’s assessment in the post match interview was spot on. He did well but we need more from him (he was speaking about McCormick as well). He didn’t make any mistakes as far as I saw either, but as a defensive unit we stood off them far too much. In fairness to all three of the centre backs we put out though, you wouldn’t chose any of them as a big strapping centre back that’s going to get his head on everything and outmuscle a forward. That’s where we really missed Taylor and probably need another CB of his type in the squad.

That's some conclusion! Maybe he'd been scoring from corners every day in training? How many games in August? We brought in Taylor, Friend, Crama, Wilson, plus had covering fullbacks so it's not that odd that the kid went for 1st team experience for a while. You might be right mind! I could be completely wrong. Very probably 😂 it just struck me as a bit odd, that comment, particularly if it was in his mind to loan him out. It’s a mug’s game trying to read Barton’s mind, though 😂

I still can't understand why fellow supporters are convinced we need to strengthen up front (with potentially a transfer fee and huge wages on an aging player) vs at the back where we have more issues.... ...now 22 games in total (21 in the league) since we failed to score. Still only failed to score in three games this season. When you are scoring that often against so many different opponents (home and away, top/bottom of the table, league/cup) it's time to stop looking at our attackers and start look further back - clean sheets win games. Only four clean sheets in all competitions, the last one was in November... When you look at the stats any money (transfer fees and/or wages) should be spent to stop us conceding goals. Absolutely agree. Anyone at the game yesterday will tell you we looked really shaky when Barnsley came anywhere near our back line, but I’d say that going forward we were consistently the better team. Really missed Taylor and Wilson.

I’ve thought Cox has looked pretty good in every area bar looking dodgy clearing the ball when put under pressure. In every era up until this one that wouldn’t be that much cause for concern, but comfort on the ball is essential for modern keepers. I’d back him to improve this aspect of his game, though and there is a major caveat in that he is at times put under that pressure by the defenders in front of him. Stick with him, for me, albeit none of us really know how good Jed Ward is.

I reckon we'll be much more up for it than them now they are back in the promotion hunt and we'll win. Obvs no chance at Anfield but a great day out and £££££'s in for the club. Let's just hope Taylor's fit as otherwise it's Hoole or Gibbons at CB! I still can't understand why JB let Connolly become cup tied, given that he was never likely to stay at Morecambe in the long term. What I found odd was when asked in pre-season who he thought would score our first goal of the season, Barton replied ‘Beefy’, which suggested that he had full faith in him at the time as a first team starter. Cox 5 very shaky early doors Connolly 6 did OK, can play with a bit more conviction Grant 5 has lost a lot of speed, sadly. Crama 6.5 a lot to like about how he brings the ball out of defence Thomas 7.5 our one bright spark in defence and attack in the first half Finley 6 committed display Evans 7 came alive in the second half. Pulled the strings - good assist and unlucky when teed up by Vale from a free kick. McCormick 6 did well enough to show he has something still to offer Vale 6.5 looks very good going forward and does a competent job at wing back whilst understandably not being the most decisive in his tackling. Would love to see him consistently deployed further up field. Brown 6 lively but missed two key chances. Martin 7 was involved in a lot of our attacking play and put more of a shift in than he sometimes gets credit for. Excellent finish.
Ward Gibbons NOLE Hoole Hunt 6 made a positive difference down the right Collins NOLE Marquis 6 put himself about and went close to grabbing us a point Sinclair
Ref 5 typical ref at this level, really. All 50-50 calls went to the home side Barnsley 5 they have quality but the frustration is that I felt that this was a game that was ours to win if we had been a bit more decisive and hadn’t been collectively fast asleep at the start. We always looked threatening but never really grasped control.

Another fantastic goal today. Great movement and finish. We were right behind the goal - was a brilliant finish. I was impressed with his link play today as well.

Another thing to consider is the JCH situation. He is clear that he wants to move closer to Bristol. Maybe the board are torn between going back in for JCH or going for Martin? Would be Martin for me on a free. I agree that it’s alarming, if only for the reason that Taylor doesn’t seem to have anything like the final say in this.

Just a quick query about Barnsley away tickets. I bought them for me and my son online and had an email saying that the transaction includes print at home tickets, but there is no attachment. Is this normal - do tickets get sent later? It’s the first time in a year and a half that we’ve bought away tickets so I just wanted to check before I contact the dreaded Ticketmaster. My ticket order for Barnsley said the same as yours and I have received paper tickets through the post That’s great to know. Thanks.

Not a theory just fact. Gerry Francis achieved it with average players who ran their bollocks off every match for 90 minutes plus. They didn't always perform to their potential but usually to 90% most matches. They very rarely scored in injury time because they put everything in for the 90 minutes that proceeded and usually scored before then. Unlike the gas players of today who think that it is ok to only start playing when you are losing. True, but there were also some memorable injury time goals back then from a team that never knew it was beaten. Two against Cardiff at Twerton for instance, when on our run of six games in a row coming from behind or level to win 2-1. I remember Mehew pushing the keeper out of the way for the winner and nodding home Cardiff fans went mad and tried to storm the pitch. Thwarted by police on horseback. Well something like that anyway. Memories from my 10 year old self.

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated. I’ll contact Pete.
I don’t know if it’s pay on the day. It’s a shame they can’t put this info out a bit more clearly. I’ve had similar confusion before. I don’t like worrying about whether I’m going to get tickets in time. It strikes me that in this day and age that could easily be avoided.

I couldn't understand why Rovers were going to sell him to Torquay for about 10k only for Liverpool to sign him for not much more. Odd that he was deemed not good enough for Rovers and yet good enough for Liverpool and odd that the fee was so low. The most bizarre transfer ever. Was delighted when Torquay were taking him off our hands and paying us as well. Could not believe it when it was announced that Liverpool had hijacked the deal! Yes, you’d have to say that this is one that we and the club got wrong. 59 top flight appearances and a much loved cult figure at Anfield that they picked up for a bargain.

Clucking hell, we have to look past whether this guy was our manager or not, or whether he may at one point have said some things that you could broadly have agreed with. For whatever reason, possibly the potential of financial gain, he has completely changed his outlook. I would urge anyone to forget any misplaced sense of loyalty to someone once attached to the club. What is coming out of his mouth now is absolutely abhorrent. Even if you were to agree with him about there being too many women commentators and pundits, the way he is framing his points has lost him any credibility and he is frankly coming across as completely unhinged. The fact that there are people who will lap this stuff up is pretty disturbing.
