With now just over a week to go to the first match looking at the ins and outs since the last game against Millwall how do you think DC's summer has fared?
OUT Lumley, Mildenhall, Puddy, Sweeney , Harris, Hartley , Clarke-Salter, Montano, Easter,Mansell, James TOTAL 11
IN Slocombe, Smith,Broadbent, Bola, Sercombe,Nicholls TOTAL 6
I have to be totally honest and say underwhelmed with the business thus far as I was a month ago but at that time in didn't really matter but now there is only just over a week to0 the first game and as I see it we are nowhere near ready to compete better than last season.
Goalkeepers 2 steady keepers signed but Lumley was questionably our best player so the positive is that both keepers are ours but are either better than Lumley. My thought - Good dealings by DC but not better.
Defence 2 unknowns brought in both inexperienced and we have lost Sweeney; who along with Lumley was our best defender; Hartley,Clarke Salter and Harris. My thought- We are far worse off both ability and experience.Dealings to date very poor.
Midfield Mansell our only lost and has been replaced by Sercombe . My thoughts I would say this is a plus and I see Sercombe doing a good job and being a regular
Wingers Montano was our only loss but to date no replacement and Bodin ands Moore are our only wingers. My thought Poor to date if we are to play 4-4-2
Forwards Lost James and Easter and signed Nicholls. My thought is that we look very short of goalscorers but Nicholls is a positive as james scored nil and easter not enough but in truth DC has not got us (to date) a top goalscorer .
Overall my prediction for the season would be a finish of 16th and whilst some will say we have until the end of August to complete transfer business I would say that is fine if we are after players to fill the squad but IMO we are after 3 or 4 players to actually START and these should be in the building BEFORE we play Charlton.
What do others think other than In DC we trust?

Completely agree with you Steve, also Nichols may be an improvement on James but as DC said, he's a replacement for Taylor.. is he gonna score that many goals?? I'm not so sure

Your also forgetting that the Snake left.
I am not confident at this point, the recruitment has been slow and communication regards to UWE has been poor.
Maybe my/our expectations were too high.
But i do think we are in trouble at this point, If my Maths is right we are 6 players worse off.

Rickie Lambert was signed one August 31st. In effect that is when it matters. Managers don't choose the system. They use the system.

Unless DC has a few deals up his sleeve then the action does not match the earlier rhetoric. OK the squad has numbers but as DC knows he's 3 or 4 signings short of a top 6 finish. Lower mid-table without further signings I would say.

I'm not so sure I'll be surprised if Nichols scores more than 10-12 goals this season. A useful players but one who will need to improve a lot if he's to become a 20 goal a year striker.

I think you are worrying for the sake of it! Yes, we will miss Sweeney, but that was a gimme - surely you didn't expect us to buy him or have him back? Him and Lumley are too good for us and therefore on higher wages and could play at a higher level. You don't start your career by dropping in to L1 when you are at a Premier League or Championship club. Broadbent has been bought in to hopefully take over from Sweeney! He can't be any worse than Hartley or JCS surely? Same role as Sweeney - win the headers and let TL sweep up around him. He fits the DC mould with plenty of character! As for the wingers - Bodin is consistent so unless injured likely to play every week. Broom can come on and replace Moore if he is as inconsistent as last year - he may surprise us this year as more settled and perhaps first choice. James and Easter won't be missed. Would like to see Lambert/ Jon Parkin (5 years ago) type signing to bolster the front line, but reckon Gaffers and Nichols will start the first game. Evolution. IDCWT

Excellent post. Unfortunately some will have a go at you as you aren't allowed to be negative, but I for one 100% share your opinions.
Definitely need 3-4 class players. Sweeney or someone of that ilk, a winger as BM showed very little last season. A striker, as we have only replaced one out of three in my eyes, Snakey, James and Easter.
Then you can say that we need a player with a bit of individual brilliance, like Colkett had, but doesn't go missing for 85 minutes. I know BB has this, but if we lost him to injury, or even an international call up, our creativness would be on its backside.

When do the Premier League teams name their squads for the season? Once they have named the 25 players, we will see some loan signings as those that aren't in squads filter their way down the Leagues to gain some experience.
Plenty of time. IDCWT.

Think this could be summed up by saying just what a few of us have been since Nichols signing was announced, we still need a CH, LW and a striker or two, which DC also stated recently.
Unless Broadbent turns out to be an inspired signing, then the lack of a replacement for Sweeney is the biggest concern for me at present.
As things stand at present why did we sign two first team goalies, when we lack one decent CH & LW?
Like the UWE & The Colony news, signings wise, we just love in hope it'll turn out OK eventually, but fear it might not!

Agreed, but tbf it was by far the hardest position to fill, Taylor scored a lot of goals for us.. it's not something you find overly often. If we bring Sweeney back I'll be happy with the defence tho, another winger and midfield should be fine as well... need at least 1 more quality striker tho

If this was our squad for the season I would be worried. However DC said not long ago the players that he would be brining in. So the squad will look totally different then.
A lot of the better players, won't be loaned out until next week, as the clubs would want to have a decent look at them during pre season. This will include Sweeney who is still a possibility, until he signs else where on loan and the U21 players, that were playing in the Euros. If they have even started training again yet and DC decides he wants them.
Still too early to judge the squad. You moaned before and they we signed some more players! I expect us to do the same again, even if a few of them are on loan. We only knew about the Nichols interest, because there chairman had a big mouth! Who knows who else we are after, these things take time. It took weeks to get him, but we got him in the end.

DC already said he would be signing another left footed centre back and a winger. You can only sign who is available and he could be waiting on Sweeney or another target.

What do others think other than In DC we trust? 1.) Keepers- DC has seen them in training day in, day out, you haven't. You really have no idea if they are as good or better than Lumley or not at this point. 2.) Defenders- How can you tell if we are far worse off with ability when we haven't played a competitive game yet? Again, DC has seen Broadbent train day in, day out, you haven't, and he thought there was enough there to sign him on, likewise with Burn. We could be just as well off in terms of ability as far as you really know, but again at this point you or I really have no idea. We may need a signing in this area, but we have no idea what DC has already tried or is still trying to bring in. 3.) Wingers- I would agree in that I think we need a signing in this area, but it sounds like Byron Moore has impressed in a couple of games this pre-season and for all we know, he may look a different player in training than he did last season. If he hits some form, he would be like a new signing. 4.) Strikers- Again I would agree that I think we need a signing but we have no idea what sort of impact Nichols is going to make, we haven't seen him in training every day like DC has. It also looks like DC has favoured the 4-3-3 formation in pre-season which may be a sign of things to come for the season, in which case only one striker would start anyway. And again we have no idea who DC has tried to bring in but had ridiculous demands or who he is still trying to bring in. When I did a poll a few weeks ago to ask if people would rather get a bargain at the end of the window or pay more money now, the majority said they'd rather wait. So was it different people who answered that to those who are panicking now, or have those people just changed their minds? In an ideal world, I would also like us to sign a few more players and to have had all business sorted by now, but this is real life, not FIFA 18. I'd say wait until the end of the window before you judge our business, and wait until at least 8-10 games into the season before you judge how good our new signings are.
