Think this could be summed up by saying just what a few of us have been since Nichols signing was announced, we still need a CH, LW and a striker or two, which DC also stated recently. Unless Broadbent turns out to be an inspired signing, then the lack of a replacement for Sweeney is the biggest concern for me at present. As things stand at present why did we sign two first team goalies, when we lack one decent CH & LW? Like the UWE & The Colony news, signings wise, we just love in hope it'll turn out OK eventually, but fear it might not! I would guess that we signed 2 goalkeepers early in the window because you can't play pre season games without them

Completely agree with you Steve, also Nichols may be an improvement on James but as DC said, he's a replacement for Taylor.. is he gonna score that many goals?? I'm not so sure Not sure I ever understand this argument when it's brought up. How many Gasheads after we signed Taylor from FGR's bench thought 'yep, there's a man who'll go on to score 20+ in L2 and L1'. Maybe DC. Anyone else?

Perhaps DC does have a top 6 budget but who knows.

If we signed one keeper and he didn't look confident or make a great start, everyone would be slating DC's recruitment. Having two means that there is always competition meaning whoever is first choice knows they have to keep working hard because a couple of bad games means they're out. Maybe that lack of competition is the reason our keepers have been so poor since our Conference season. I personally think that getting two solid first team keepers in is our best business of the window so far.

My thoughts regarding this summers transfer activity.
Yes we had Lumley but was he that good or was it the fact he played behind a very good CB in Sweeney ? Think the options of two established goalies are better this season.
With regards to Hartley and Clark -Salter not really a great loss. Biggest loss is Sweeney who either needs to be re signed or someone similar in ability.
As you say Mansell has been replaced by Sercombe ( midfield numbers ) who I suspect will offer us a lot more. Bola cancels out Harris. Hopefully Nicholls will score more than James & Easter put together.
With the extra 4 additions I reckon this lot will easily surpass last seasons squad.

Agreed, plus the changes in the loan windows now mean that there is no way of getting someone in at short notice if the no.1 keeper suffered an injury/suspension. I think that DC will rotate the two, certianly for cup games, to keep them both fresh.

Especially since that year most people thought White was gonna be the main man lol but no you make a very valid point

I guess the answer will become clearer come the 1st Sept and beyond, as it'll be odd if we have two 1st goalies but no decent CH or LW. As far as the other poster suggesting they'll play in our cup games given we usually get knocked out in the 1st round of all the cups that'll be about 5 or 6 games inc the EFL trophy matches!

Re Sweeney, Stoke paid £250K for him from AFC Dons so he was hardly an unknown, meanwhile DC signed Broadbent on a free after he was part of the Hayes team relegated from a division below the National leagues, perhaps DC's found another non-league gem, if so, it's odd no league team nearer to Hayes seemed interested in signing him.. For someone who spends so much time posting on here it's odd that you don't look for other sources for information. In a recent article about Broadbent he stated that his Army Manager was helping him leave the Army and fulfill his dream of playing professional football. It was this manager who contacted our club and DC to arrange a trial with us and we gave him one. Whether or not they contacted other clubs before hand is not mentioned. Why would a league club be interested in a player unable to play professional full-time football if they believe he is still a member of the armed forces and so prevented from doing so? From what I've seen and read I'm pretty excited about Broadbent and believe he has the potential to do very well for us.

From what I've seen and read I'm pretty excited about Broadbent and believe he has the potential to do very well for us. His army manager contacted Tommy Doherty and sent him the youtube clips, Doherty then sent the clips to Broadbent's agent Danny Coles who then contacted DC, as told by Broadbent on talksport. I'm a little concerned about him being considered first choice, so hopefully the new CB that we are targeting will be a quality addition and Tom can challenge him for the spot. Broadbent looks a bit raw to me from what I've seen from the Weston match and youtube stuff, but I'm looking forward to seeing how he copes against WBA tomorrow, although obviously we can only really gauge how he will cope when the real action starts. Good luck to him.

The evolution of the team/squad continues, and I, for one am happy.
We started last season with many players who'd never played this level. Some fell by the wayside, others proved themselves.
We start this season with everyone of our longer term players more experienced and an improvement on what we were at the start of 2016/17.
We now have two goalkeepers of our own.
Bodin in particular is a big improvement on early 2016/17, seems fully fit and ready to go. Gaffney appears to be on fire from the end of last season and pre season.
DC has convinced players to come to our club rather than other league one outfits, the players he's signed seem to be hungry.
DC will sign more players.
I, for one, see no need to "jump in the river and drown". UTG

We are now able to judge this with slightly more accuracy...
For me, we are now far stronger today than we were this time last year.
