I think he’s erratic to be honest , he does make some good very good reflex saves but nothing else he does feels me with confidence. He’s average because of this. If he commanded the box better and improved his kicking he’d be a top keeper, but then we probably wouldn’t have been able to sign him anyway !

Don’t forget that we need him to let 1 goal in per game so that we can win our bets 😄

Yeah, at this level you usually need to choose between shot-stopper and everything-elser. I think he's a pretty decent balance of these, for a team going for promotion. (I prefer the emphasis to be on shot-stopper.)

A few maybe but none that come to mind. Well, Oxford of course. But he rarely lets us down and obviously works well with the back 4.

I think it took Smith a while to adjust the club, he broke his hand early into the season and that led to the spell out and when he returned he seemed nervous on some of his catches. Since just before the Christmas period however, he seems to have regained that confidence and has led to me feeling a lot more secure with him in goal. Performances like the one he had last night when every member of our defence (Other than J Partington) had an off night helps to prove that he's worthy of the #1 role.

The only thing Im perplexed about Smith is his body language on the pitch.
He holds himself in a really casual way, looking like he doesn't care or isn't dominant or commanding.
He often sits on his haunches when the ball isnt in our half and he always seems really late to set himself. He always seems to be in the right place and makes good saves so it doesn't effect his game at all, but it just looks unorthodox and casual.
Yet despite that he always seems to be needling an opposing forward or their fans in some way so he is clearly up for the fight.
He reminds me more of a drummer than footballer sometimes!!
I have come to like him and worry less about his style, but he's certainly different.

It’s all about opinions but I think we have two good keepers, Smith makes good reflex saves, yes dodgy kicking at times but alll keepers do even the prem ones. Happier with our two rather than all the loans we have had over the years bar Lumley and Anderson.

I like Smith as a shot stopper and he is growing on me. But every time that ball goes into the 6 yard box I get very nervous because he doesn’t command the space. But him and Slocombe are a big improvement on all the keepers we’ve had and I include Lumley in that (I know many will disagree but it’s just my opinion.) he doesn’t always gather cleanly but he’s quick to recover and he is brave. His kicking was better last night than other times I’ve seen but I do wonder at his concentration and positioning sometimes. Last night, second half, he was in no man’s land on a couple of occasions and at one of them I was certain we were going to lose a goal. A better team would have scored by lobbing him because he was way out of his area. Players at our level prefer to put the ball left or right of the keeper few ever put the ball over their head as more skill is needed to do that perhaps. Perhaps he is casual like Hugo said but it worry’s me that a few basics appear to be missing at times. I think he’s just trying to be a super cool character!! But this is League 1 and if he were perfect and brilliant Leicester would not have released him and he would have been challenging Schmeichel. So on the whole I’m glad to have him here. UTG!

Smith is turning into a pretty good keeper actually. I, like many others, was very nervous about him at first but he is improving each game. Considering we seem to have had terrible problems with GKs in the recently, it says something that Smith's error against Oxford was glossed over as 'ah well' - it happens. Before, it would have been heads on spikes time.
He's young too - only 25. He could turn out to be a gem with us if we coach him well. He needs to command the box a little better & improve his distribution. With a good coach though, he could be here for a long time/even sell him for a very good price

Think you are spot on re Nicholls, DC obviously see's we have a good player but the way we set up to play doesn't suit him. Take last night the whole team, bar Smith and Partington, was poor in the first half yet Nicholls can be singled out. Feeding off scraps is a term already used to sum up last night and that's correct, for both him and Gaffney. Long hopeful punts up field or lobs over the top made things easy for their defence, even when he won the ball in the air he seemed to have to then chase his own flick on. He was actually making some good runs in between the centre halves but the service wasn't there.. When he did get through he was deemed offside which looked a very close call from where I was. All our goals came from width which we didn't have in the first half. Browners first time cross for the first goal was a peach but probably his first foray forward in the whole game, yet at Oxford he was getting forward all game. Line's goal came again from good work by Moore down the right and I think he did well because he was able to exploit the space that was being left by the system the opposition were playing. ........... and he still missed that chance.

Do you think Nichols could do we few games in reserves just to get him going or heaven forbid few goals?

Couldn't make it last night but saw highlights this morning (thank you Dr Gas) and apologies if this has been covered, but how did Smith pick up his head injury? Someone in the Thatchers end lobbed a stale pork pie at him, and caught him in the eye and Smithy bit the dust. Was it two ton Ted from Teddington?

He fumbled a shot but then got down bravely to the rebound and got a kick in the head in the process. Normal Saturday afternoon on the tote end then

5 points off the playoffs as it stands (for you negative guys we're only 11 clear of relegation). 6 points away from another season in league one more like! Didn't we get relegated to league two with 53 or 54 points once, so shouldn't we aim for 55 points to be safe? Statisticians correct me if I'm wrong.
