Just back and haven’t read the whole thread but for what it’s worth: We didn’t play well throughout but at times we did pass it around and made them look poor. A better team than AFCW would have been a few goals up at HT and won easily. Upson played as well as I’ve seen him and deserved the MOM closely followed by Craig or even Tom N. Nichols played well and despite being short kept on being fed high balls. Why? When it was on the ground he is good on the ball and he never gave up and kept their defence busy. And I’ve no idea what Payne did when he came on for Nichols, we were better off with Nichols on, at least he jumped for the ball, hassled their defence and never gave up. Payne never started. We are short of quality but we dug in and got a result, the players are giving their best for the team (and D.C.) so no complaints there. With a better No.9 up front we would be a far better team. We’ve too many players like Matthews and Bennett who are good on the ball but have little end product because when they look to put a cross in or pass into the box there’s no one there, so they cut back and play back to a colleague. For all the stick he gets on here Craig is playing very well and shows great commitment and didn’t lose too many headers against their giants. And when he went off with a cut, from where I was sat in the front row of the East Stand it looked bad, he was soon back on. That’s the kind of commitment we need at the moment. We weren’t very good but AFCW were poor and despite their size, it wasn’t matched by effort or skill. We’ll finish above them. Well done DC and well done the team, the 3 points are more important than the performance and it will give the team a lot of confidence I hope. Big test on Saturday against Barnsley. I guess that’s one match we’d be happy to have a 0-0 against! UTG! Agree with most of this.
Upson had a decent game but I wouldn't give him MOTM because I felt we lost the midfield battle for much of the game. I'd probably give it to Craig.
Agree about Nichols and Payne though. Nichols might be half the size but he'll challenge for absolutely everything and often managed to win headers or hold up the ball against much bigger defenders. He'll run all day long, has an excellent first touch and always makes himself available. We lost our only outlet when he went off because Payne was so poor it was like playing with 10 men.
We had pretty much all the luck going last night. They hit the post, missed a few decent chances, had a goal disalowed and pretty much scored both of ours. Still, the result was definitely more important than the performance and it was a big relief to finally get another 3 points.
Agree with all of this. Nichols and Payne thing - Nichols was too isolated for most of the game and like you say at leasy he competed for everything and did as good as he could really for a man of his size with balls pumped up to him. Payne came on and didn't even attempt to win a header. He's looking a really poor signing and I really hope he wasn't £250k or whatever it was reported we signed him for. What I don't get with him though is that the first couple of games, he looked so committed and was going for and chasing everything, he now looks the complete opposite. Why?!

Three pretty vital points, another clean sheet. We can moan all we like about the performance, quality or lack thereof, goal scoring ability but we got what we needed desperately tonight. Thank the Lord for Jack Bonham, Tom Lockyer & Tony Craig. I don’t mind if I never see Payne or Jakubiak again! Harsh on Jakubiak. The kid has potential.
He does but we need someone to deliver now, not next year or 2 years time when he is back at his parent club.

Great 3 points could have been three down first half, rode our luck dust ourselves down onto the next project them players gave me everything tonight, they re a honest bunch. As an aside how many times does Nicho play with his hair😂😂😂 feel sorry for the bloke don’t blame him playing with his hair he’s got nobody playing alongside him AT HOME F joke My mate was so bored he just noticed how often he touches his hair, we like Nicho and think he is playing well but the incessant grooming is funny 😁 next time he plays watch him for two minutes and you will see, he needs a decent strike partner but Payner seems out of favour, jak was poor Saturday and Reilly is obviously injured I would think.

I can only guess Payne as attitude issues unless there is something we don't know. He was excellent when he came. Strange as he is playing in the position that can lead to huge riches, I would be busting a gut!

Should he be cut from the team? Needs time to gel. Not sure we should have got him on a perm. Need to comb the leagues for a replacement.

This being 'page 17' of this thread, I agree with just about everything said on this 'page'. Just imagine what damage we could do in Lge 1 if we had a traditional number 9 and number 10 up front. True, and I guess that’s the frustration of our current position. One or two “better”players and we could be flying. But I suppose most teams say that don’t they? UTG!

No beard last night is he injured Don't ask that's got nothing to do with you. We keep injuries a secret as other teams would be terrified if they knew who we had coming back

Riley now there's a blast from the past. One minute good enough start another not in the squad. Is it really any wonder they don't look like they've met before they get on the pitch. I'm sure DC could produce any number of statistics and mileage charts to show who ran fastest and furthest in training but sending out this random selection every week is making it very hard for them to perform as a team Picking a team to combat the strengths and exploit the weaknesses of different opposition seems sensible to me. It's done us ok in the last 4 years anyway. And if we can't find a settled side that at least look as though they may know where a colleague is making a run it'll get us relegated as well

Just think Nicholls runs around loads and loads and hasn't scored for a year. Payne doesn't run round loads and loads and has.
Almost makes you think running round loads and loads isn't necessarily the mark of a goal-scoring striker.
Anyone got enough time to search this forum for the phrases "Harrison lazy" or "Harrison disinterested"?

What was the main difference last season? His work rate. (and consistency)

What i find depressing is that its already obvious that were going to struggle next season if we stay up or get relegated.

(and consistency) Using a more objectively verifiable metric of goals to games rather than just what you reckon his best season was the Conference when he scored 17 in 39.
