I wonder if the ECB has learnt anything from this Summers World Cup when they compare it to the Women’s Football World Cup. Cricket sold out long ago to Sky and have used that money well to grow the game. Unfortunately a whole generation of cricket followers have had no cricket to watch on terrestrial and it is slowly getting less and less important as part of the sporting Summer. Whereas being on BBC has given Women’s football a great window to show what it can do and the TV audiences have gradually grown during the competition. It’s had far more publicity than the cricket which for me, a cricket fan, is a great shame. The Woman’s World Cup has been such a success that the FA, who controlled it, are talking to the PL about them taking it over. Blimey if the PL take it over say goodbye to it being on terrestrial or the BBC, it will be sold to Sky for the most money. It will probably grow but another generation of youngsters will be denied watching it on public channels. Esp after such a great publicity window this summer. Sorry if some think this is more about the Women’s World Cup (football) than the Cricket World Cup. It’s not but some may think it is. My point is despite cricket being a great game and good to watch, denying people the chance to see it on a public channel has been hugely damaging to the game. The new hundred competition will be on a public station, no Sky this time. I hope the ECB will realise that all need to be able to see top quality cricket not just those who have Sky because they are cricket enthusiasts. Here's the thing. When the BBC and ITV had the monopoly for everything on tv, did we ever see England playing cricket abroad, live? Until Sky came along, we never had that chance except for a 25 minute highlight show around 11:45 at night! Sky have paid the money, and one-day cricket has become more and more popular. Sky took the financial hits early on, and now it is popular everyone expects the good ole BBC to show it, when in the past the BBC has totally ignored it ! The public channels don't pay any money for sport, especially the BBC. If you put it on the BBC then the sport loses out on money that Sky would pay to help develop it. Fact, the only sport on the BBC is stuff they don't have to pay for. Therefore, if they pay nothing then there is no money going into that sport. It's a fact of life. Don’t really disagree with what you’ve said but that wasn’t my point. The Women’s World Cup was great to see as was the Cricket World Cup but one had terrestrial coverage and has garnered all the publicity and will see their sport really grow because of it, the Cricket World Cup was just as good, played to very good crowds yet will not grow as much because fewer people including fewer youngsters will have seen it because it’s locked into a subscription channel. Had it been available to free-to-view channels it would have been seen by far more and it would have had far more public awareness and would have grown. Of course if you put it on the BBC (or anyone else like ITV, Channel 4 or 5) the sport does lose out in a way because they don’t have the Sky money. But I can’t say lower league football incl Rovers have gained much from the Sky arrangement. Just as grass roots cricket has not benefitted from the Sky money. Cricket by getting the Sky money has developed a pretty good product but one that doesn’t get much publicity even in the summer because far fewer people see it because they don’t have Sky and who rely on free-to-view terrestrial channels where no cricket exists. I suspect that the ECB are worried about this and in their deal on the new city-based hundred competition they are expecting a terrestrial channel to get the TV rights and put cricket back on TV for more than just those who pay Sky. You’ve just gat to see the number of people who play cricket dropping like a stone over the years of the Sky contract. |

Also, I'm not convinced youngsters are missing out - how many actually sit and watch sport for long periods anyway? Most nowadays will stream or watch highlights on YouTube. I think it's more middle aged men who don't want to pay for Sky that make the most noise about this issue.When I was a sports mad kid in the 80's when free to air had a complete free reign sport was very neglected. Hardly any live football, even away England games could only be followed on radio, no overseas cricket, foreign leagues were never seen and even the Ryder cup wasn't shown for the whole event - when in the US we only had highlights. All a bit of a myth about the great days of free to air sport. Just my opinion of course!! Oh come on eric, you’ve lots of common sense and post really sensible stuff usually. I can’t believe you think that lots of elderly people or anyone who love cricket but can’t afford a Sky subscription can be dismissed so easily as “more middle aged men who don’t want to pay for Sky....” Perhaps for every “middle aged man who don’t want to pay” there is a number of children and others who can’t watch the cricket because the middle aged man can’t afford to pay. And of course you’re right about the myth of great days of free to air sport in some ways. But it was a whole different age then. But we did have live golf incl Ryder Cup in America, on free to view channels but of course when contracts came up for renewal the free to view channels couldn’t compete financially could they? But it was a different time with different viewing patterns. My point was about the wonderful effect of public viewing, seeing the Women’s World Cup has had on the game and how it has raised its profile. I suspect had it been on a subscription channel it would not have been so successful. But, as you say, just my opinion! 😉 |

Superb bowling display from the kiwi's today,which just goes to show anything can happen in a one off game. India's batsmen and noisy fan's seemed confident ahead of this and were chasing a mediocre total but their top order were just blown away with a combination of rash shots and some great fielding from NZ including a brilliant catch from Neesham. Always nice to see the underdog win. Same again tomorrow please.  |

Dhoni great player but whilst in with Jadeja he was too slow. Whilst Jadeja was giving it a blast all NZ had to do was continue to bowl well and once Jadeja was out the pressure just ramped up and they went for a difficult second run and Dhoni run out. Proved what most had been saying, India too dependent upon top three an dtheir two opening bowlers. Dhoni misjudged the run rate v England and NZ. Great player though.
And fair play to Kohli, I joked who would he blame and he didn’t, was very respectful towards NZ.
Big game tomorrow now. Come on England.

Pleased NZ won. Although they are a terrific and dangerous side on their day I would much rather face them in a final than India. BUT if we lose to Australia I would much rather India had got through !!!
Hope today is not weather affected and that we don't freeze on the big occasion, particularly our batting which is prone to the odd collapse.
