He’s a striker, strikers should score goals and strikers take and score penalties. It’s their bread and butter. Tom Nichols has a consistent record of doing neither and trying to score that type of cheeky penalty away from home is just plain stupid.
When I was coached I had one manager who went through penalty drills with all us strikers. He motto was as high as you can as hard as you can. Just like Mansell at Wembley.
Occasionally you may crack the bar and occasionally the keeper will pull off a good save but 90% of the time they are out of reach.
I was the penalty taker at every club I played for, must have scored 30 odd pens and I missed once after the keeper got his fingers to it and pushed it onto the bar. Ok I didn’t have the pressure of league football and 1000s of fans but it’s still 12 yards, a football a goal and a keeper and Nichols is a much better footballer than I ever was.

Just free and now popped onto the matchday thread. Have to agree that penalty was very poor, but it's also very poor the way OTT reactions from most on here. Like a bunch of kids. His goalscoring record has not been good enough, not by a long way. We've all seen that he can do well when his confidence is up, but he's too much of a confidence player and it's a vicious cycle for him. He'll do better at his next club I feel. However, some of the reactions like "get the c*nt out" and words to that effect are just childish. My opinion of course. Hopefully we can come back and get something from the game nonetheless. Agreed, Nichols doesn’t look league 1 and has been a poor finisher since day 1 for us and I hope his contract isn’t extended. However calling a him a lady garden because he did something poor is disgusting. He didn’t try to screw the penalty up to screw us over. Aren't you the poster who has consistently defended him during his time here? Not having a go, just interested as to why you’ve had a change of heart. You’re absolutely right that some of the abuse he’s got for missing the penalty is unacceptable btw. |

That was as bad a penalty as you will ever see. The keeper already started his dive before he hit it which makes it even worse. Hasn’t Smith already taken and scored a penalty this season? In which case why didn’t he take this one? Can anybody understand why both DC & GC feel Nichols is league 1 standard striker? It is a f*cking mystery. |

Like a gang of school bullies on here all piling in and verbally abusing TN. Sad really. Bullshit.. The guy is paid very,very well by our football club to do a job which he does not do,and has never done since joining our club. 3 years of support our fanbase has given him while in all honestly he has been horseshit! We have just dressed the fact up.. That pen was a disgrace and is the reason why we are 2-0 right now. Its not "bullying" to speak the god damm truth. |

I didn't go today because my lad was playing for his local side and I said he had to honour his obligation to his team and his mates. Im kind of glad we didn't go. Travelling all that f@cking way to watch some who cost us something over £200,000, put a weak penalty down the middle into the keepers midriff for FFS. Even the commentator said it was a dreadful, terrible penalty. I was at Northampton a couple of years ago when the useless little C### did exactly the same. He's played in practically every game since then, and has scored about 4 goals. 4 F@cking goals and he's probably paid about £3,000 a week. What does the Twat have to do to displease you? F@ck me. Wise words. |

Lets be honest Nichols miss is deflecting from the fact we've been poor from the kick off, OC doesn't look fit and playing two tiny players upfront is never going to work. To be fair, Doncaster are a good footballing side...we aren't. Kick and rush is only going to get us so far I'm afraid. The Radio Bris commentator just sounded surprised that we strung some passes together late into the second half - which kinda says it all really! I'd love us to try and emulate the sort of football that Doncaster have made their trademark. |

This game was lost from the moment the moment the team was selected, we have a player that quite frankly be at the club let alone selected to play many games.
Our manager gets many things right but like our last manager he is completely wrong with persevering with this player.

Being out of the country I've watched the last few games in I follow except today's thankfully. It gives a much better perspective than being at a game for me. We've played some decent stuff, particularly the midfield 3 of Sercs, Upson and Ogogo but missing one of those three and our top scorer was always going to be tough. |

Of course personal insults are wrong, but it is borne out of frustration with a player that just doesn't deliver time and time again.
I also think it was wrong to give Ollie the captaincy - he just doesn't do what Craig has done in his absence. Maybe if Craig had been captain he would have had a word with Nichols before he took the penalty?
We are struggling with a couple of key players missing - JCH and Sercs

Donny have been on a poor run of form and only been averaging around a Ipswich game, they are hardly Ipswich, although missing two of our best players in JCH and Sercs can't help. |

I’ve continually said that he’s decent on the ball, good control but lacks strength and confidence and doesn’t score enough goals since the beginning. |

Because Im sure that we have had worse finishers at our club during our history than Tom...I hope we have at least given that he is still starting for us today.😨😕 He is by far,far the worse finisher for any striker we have had that I can remember. |
