Still happy to occupy a building that was funded by a slave trader though. They might change the name but they can’t change the fact they are happy to remain in a building funded by slavery. Surely a bigger statement would be to leave the building, hand it over to the people of Bristol and buy their own premises elsewhere using their own funds? I assume that's where the beacon bit of the name comes from. Like a beacon of anti racism or some sh1t like that. A bit funny that you are using morals when you'd support a slave trader? Who owns the building? Who is supporting a slave trader? |

A divisive figure yes. Most Cities, Towns, Buildings, monuments or whatever were built by slaves of some sort. Whether it's the Great Wall Of China, The Pymarids, Roman Viaducts, Castles, etc, etc. Even buildings being in built in places like Dubai, Qatar and other places in the Middle East are being built off the back of Slave Labour as we speak. The Atlantic Slave Trade was an unfortunate sign of the times, an abhorant, vile, practice. I think we all agree on that. Yeah exactly, consign it to history and move on if you can. Modern slavery is a little different to the Atlantic slave trade for obvious reasons. You are well aware of how capitalism works, labour is essential to it, so the cheaper the labour the better it is for the capitalists. I'd say there is modern slavery a lot closer to here than the middle east, and that the UK conservatives look at the China/middle-east economic model with envy. But China is a Communist utopia, as was Soviet Russia and North Korea is a shining beacon to us all. Why, they haven't had a single case of Corona virus. As we are all aware, there is absolute political and religious freedom in China, just as there is in N Korea. And of course the standard of living in those two countries for all citizens, just as it was in Soviet Russia, is and was the highest in the world. Ho f ucking Ho. |

Lol you say the Bristol Beacon is more sickening than the name of a man who made all of his money through slavery. I assume you will never set foot in it again. I never said it was more sickening then being named after Edward Colston so stop making up fibs.. Why would I not go there now based on the new name of the Venue..? I just find it cheesy and like abit of virtue signalling from the owners based on its history. It sums up our city of today. When it re-opens I will go there whenever there is a show I want to see. I will alśo refer to it as the Colston Hall because that's it's name. I suspect that the vast silent majority of Bristolians will do the same. I notice it hasn't been given some w**k name like the One Call Arena or some such crap like most football stadiums have been renamed. I suspect that no commercial sponsor wanted to waste their money when they knew everyone would still call it the Colston Hall. Just like has happened with the MEN arena in Manchester. |

I've noticed that the majority of people with the biggest voices on these issues are also Guardian readers, Guardian "Journalists" and Writers. They're happy to read, work and write for a publication founded by John Edward Taylor who was a Cotton Trader who made his fortune off the back of the slave trade too, they don't seem to care about where his money came from to set that up, they are happy to read or work for it some 180 years after. I bet most wear clothes that were made in some sweat shop in the Far East somewhere by kids as young as 6. I bet they've all had Iphones or Samsungs which uses Cobalt where kids are down mines in Sierra Leone or Democratic Republic Of Congo digging for it. Where does it end? Oh Gastafari, they're not interested in where or how the components of their various gadgets are sourced. They're too busy having a simplistic guilt trip over the priveledged colour of their skin, other people's racism and the name of a concert venue. |

What I never understood in all this, from a little while ago, was that well known group Massive Attack, always said they would never play at The Colston Hall because of its obvious links to the man. Fair enough. But they were happy to play on the Downs which, in part, is owned by the Merchant Venturers. Who historically had links with.....Mr C.

Not charged with Murder. Rightly so. It's a shame she died of course, but her boyfriend fired the gun first, they fired back. She ended up dead. Yet another case which people are blaming racism for, when there is no proof of it whatsoever. There had been suspicions of drug offences happening at the premises. The Police may have entered the premises the wrong way, and that is what the charge is for. Nothing else. |
