Only 1 person has ever been banned from GC. Step forward Jaggas. 1 other came close and was eventually banned for altering their user pic to something offensive but obviously that was seen in all areas of the forum. We have always let this area have freedom, but there are obvious limits as there are in all aspects of life. Free speech is a myth. If there obvious limits they are not obvious to me. Some of the worst surely were between Gassy and Nobby so what did Jaggas do to get banned? Overt and persistent racism despite polite requests to stop. Funny you should mention Gassy and Nobby. I did comment on that at the time, but there is a massive difference between 2 people having a tiff and sweeping racism. You and I could go at it and the only people we are insulting are each other. I'm sure you can appreciate why the two things are different.

Well as you may know I don't think anyone should be abused so for that reason they weren't obvious to me, so I'm glad you've cleared that up.

I wonder what qualifications and social skills are required for a Mod role? 😮

We were always brought up to be polite and I respect that in others whatever their point of view is and of course it goes without saying race or creed.

How about replacing it with a statue of William Wilberforce? No connection to Bristol but but a leading figure in this country in the fight to end slavery? Surely that would be acceptable to all, black and white.

The older generation, who's lives have been turned upside down by a virus, are obviously scared. Them seeing young vibrant people outside doing what they whatever they want, that's going to stir huge emotions. Still, not the youths fault though, they are only reacting to the what is happening in the world.

Well its not an old man like me's fault is it as I was sat at home in my armchair 💺 Sorry it's their fault and they broke the law. I never thought I would live long enough to see people breaking the law and taking videos of themselves doing it, the Tories would like that as it cuts down on public spending 😊

Any negative reaction (that I have seen) is down to two things: A) Protesting during a pandemic B) Violence/criminal damage For me A) is much much worse than B). The protesters may think the risks to their own safety were worth taking but I’m not sure they have the right to take those risks on behalf of their relatives or friends or others they come into contact with. The social distancing stuff is not a joke and is there to save lives— that message seems to have been seriously lost because of the protests (although arguably the diminishing of the importance of the lockdown rules has been a process that started with Cummings). The violence seems strange to focus on compared to the timing of the protests, there was nothing like the trouble seen in America and it is arguable whether the idiots involved had anything to do with the protest and weren’t just hangers on looking for a reason to kick off.

BTW one wee thing I'd like ta say is it's good how this debate is moving, and there's guys from both sides (who I'd consider left or right leaning or somewhere in between) coming together and in basic, but broad agreement on all this (with the exception of a couple of little nuances here an there but that's to be expected)
I think that alone is good, leaving th only things up for real debate bein how to deal with it all an make things better.
It's heartening.

Saying that politicians and the media are collectively responsible....
Go Marv, didn't think you had it in you....

Anyone listening to the counter narrative being spewed out by the Government? Standard fare. Anyone who challenges authority is a thug. Citing violence that actually hardly happened.
Goodness me.
Count me in, I must be a thug.
