As I’ve said before though you take away people’s agency when you talk like that. Let’s put it another way: I had an abusive childhood, came from a poor background and got bullied at school- does that give me the moral right to deal drugs and or become a gang banger free from guilt? I mean, my background gives me all the excuse I need right? It was society’s fault, not mine. Nobody is claiming that or justifying criminality. But we cannot avoid the fact that social deprivation leads to poor outcomes. I'll have a go at challenging that. If what you mean by it 'poor outcomes' is criminality, then it's not always the case. Impoverished areas surrounded by impoverished areas tend to have low (ish) crime statistics, affluent areas tend to have low crime statistics. Where the stats sky rocket is when you have what's classed as a deprived area in close proximity to an affluent area. So, no, social deprivation, in itself, doesn't lead to what I think you are calling poor outcomes.

"So, no, social deprivation, in itself, doesn't lead to what I think you are calling poor outcomes." I am sure, hidden in there somewhere, so far into the abyss of preconceived ideology that it cannot be seen, there is a statistical basis for that assertion...but I doubt it. Taken after a study in London last year "The new figures show that three-quarters of the boroughs in London with the highest levels of violent offending are also in the top 10 most deprived, while the same boroughs also have higher proportions of children under 20 living in poverty than the London average. The statistics, in the most detailed study of the causes of violent crime ever undertaken in London, show that more than a quarter of all young Londoners live in the most deprived areas of the capital. It also reveals that serious youth violence in the capital started rising in 2012." www.london.gov.uk/press-releases/mayoral/full-links-between-poverty-and-violent-crimefrom an appendices 3.6 Available data at borough level show a significant statistical association between rates of serious youth violence and several known drivers of health inequalities. Work will continue to fully document and quantify the relative impact that these factors may be having on serious youth violence, and how the various factors interact. 3.7 When working with individuals there is good evidence on the impact of early trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as risk factors for involvement in violence. At a community level, youth violence is often more prevalent in areas of higher socioeconomic deprivation, as well as areas with illicit drug trade, and where there is a gang presence. And the proximity of those boroughs to more affluent areas? Is one of those ACEs being brought up in a single parent household?

True `nuff. Absolutely you`re entitled to your opinion, and I withdraw my "doing you no credit" remark. I was just surprised that you found his views comedic. I`ve always thought he was quite moderate and thoughtful. But, of course, that`s just my opinion. What is it about his views that you find laughable? For example "These protestors are using the actions of a policeman in Minnesota (currently charged with murder and awaiting trial) to push for the erasure of British history and culture" Really? Who is pushing for the erasure of history? No, BLM are pushing for the recognition of the reality of our history, not the single lense view taught in our education. How can "culture" be erased (other than genocide)? It's just meaningless nonsense playing to the fears of the ill informed. So there you have it, a guy privileged with private education at Eton, Oxbridge tertiary, spouting preening effete nonsense. = Laughable Disgusting isn't it, Oxbridge education, just like Starmer.

Less than 30% of the US prison population is white. Not sure what that means as far as this thread is concerned but thought I'd chuck it in. It's part of the whole mess that needs sorting out. Black people are 13% of the US population but commit over 50% of crime. Of course it's just lazy and unhelpful to point and shout 'racism'. I have a study that looks at arrest / charge / conviction etc rates by ethnicity if you would like to take a look? Black people commit over 50% of the crime? Or black people plead guilty to, or are convicted of, 50% of the crime? I wonder how jury conviction rates vary according to whether the defendant is black, white, or some other group? I also wonder whether deprived white males commit similar levels of crime to the black male community, who are, to a disproportionate extent, in the 'deprived' category in US terms. You have to be careful when throwing these generalisations out. After all, you hate it when Oldie does it. And I understand that. It's so annoying.

The stats are pretty consistent, and are based on convictions, because until then you don't have a statistic to record, so what do you want to look at exactly, shall we take homicide? The stats here are actually worse than the headline figure I quoted above, of course they fluctuate, but there have been years where 60% of homicides have been committed by black people. Now, I think you are driving towards a valid point, more black people live in densely populated areas, that makes the population easier to monitor, obviously if Police see things there will be more convictions. I don't know about behaviour in disadvantaged mixed / white areas, sorry, but the intention wasn't to throw unfounded generalisations around, I did say that it's a complicated situation. Feel free to challenge/ disprove anything I say, I was wrong yesterday about the free food programme in Baltimore, no problem whatsoever with being corrected, it's always good to have a misconception or incorrect information corrected. Here's that study paper I mentioned looking at ethnicity in prosecution, take a look if you have time / can be bothered. www.prisonpolicy.org/scans/vera/race-and-ethnicity-in-prosecution-first-edition.pdfIt's a bit dated now, 2012, but hopefully it's indicative.

So, Wrong, don't know, it's complicated.
Well yes it is complicated. For me this whole debate revolves around the influence of socioeconomic factors on crime. Do we accept that these are major causal factors and do something about them or do we just lock everyone up and ignore them.
I don't think anyone is saying crime should be understood and not punished, but to try prevention by attacking the root causes. Just locking up is not working, it is not a disincentive. Which is why, in my opinion, positive movements like BLM should be engaged with, not openly ridiculed or attacked for holding political views, however ridiculous.

Disgusting isn't it, Oxbridge education, just like Starmer. What? Starmer is preening and effete? Or put himself forward to be elected? I wasn't quite sure what the problem with the Oxbridge education was supposed to be, but Starmer has one also, that's all. Sounded like a bit of a bitter, green eyed comment to me, so just thought I would point out that your new hero has one also. Be careful using words such as 'effete' in connection with a Man such as Murray. I'll play by the rules of your team here and accuse you of Homophobia. He's gay, as you may or may not be aware, one of the definitions of that word is 'weak or effeminate'. If I, for example's sake, make such a characterisation of, let's say, a transgender person, you would start again with your 'look, he just can't help himself' stuff. You can't have it both ways. So an apology is due here please. To one of the other points you made. How can culture be erased. You are aware that across universities people are told that they have to agree to sign the student charter before they are allowed a platform to speak. The mantra is 'Silence is violence' so you either agree with us or we will silence you, then you are, by default, on the wrong side of the debate and are cast as being wrong and not even deemed suitable to have a platform to voice your opinion, utter madness, those rules are set up so that you either agree or are the villain of the piece. This is played out even in football, how many players have stood quietly whilst others have grovelled on their knees, I've counted precisely 0. It's happening in Hollywood, you had better watch every word, every tweet and make sure it's 'on message' or your career is over. That's how you erase culture, you replace it with your own vision. Germany 1930s anybody? Make no mistake, these are dangerous times. Make sure that history doesn't judge you to have been on the wrong side of this madness.

For at least the 4th time, but please consider the stuff that I've pointed you towards, the latest being that 20 minute clip from Jason Riley. This isn't new, Malcolm X knew it. What was the slogan from Mr Riley, 'America's blacks held back by helpful Liberals'? Nobody is ignoring anything, well, having said that, you always ignore links, studies, videos that I provide, but broadly speaking, it's a disagreement about the solution, as an example, replacing the Father in the family unit with a welfare cheque doesn't work. You are right, fewer black people in prison under Obama, but higher crime stats. It's almost as if he failed to address the problems but left the people committing crimes on the streets. BLM are idiots, not worth talking to. Do you actually know what communism is and the devastation it's caused? It seems not or you would never suggest that we engage with a group who promote a Marxist ideology. I can find aspects of what Mr Yaxley Lennon says that it's very difficult to disagree with, should we invite him along to sit at the top table with BLM also?

On the front of the ST this morning.. the police in Leicester are too afraid of being labelled racist, to do anything about the illegal sweatshops there. People are being paid £3.50 an hour, to work in cramped, Covid friendly conditions. That`s modern slavery. And the police are too afraid of being called racist, to do anything to help the poor f**kers being exploited. How did we get in such a situation?

Don't be so disrespectful to our law enforcement officers. They place themselves in harms way every single day. Just 3 weeks ago, here in Bristol, as they were stood watching a riot, they could have been badly injured by that falling statue.

It’s more important for the police to be seen kneeling down, dancing in carnivals or fastening their bovver boots with rainbow laces. You’ve got to see the bigger picture. Very interesting that many who are intellectually opposed to regulation are now moaning about regulation not being strong enough or not enforced. In this case minimum wage regulation enforcement falls under the domain of HMRC. Nothing to do with the police. Nothing to do with racism. Nothing to do with "Taking the Knee". Unless of course HMRC are taking the knee in some bizarre early morning ritual. I guess those who would believe anything the Murdoch press put out might believe it but personally I doubt it.😂😂😂 So the question is why are HMRC not enforcing minimum wage regulation? Could it be that they are under resourced? Could it be because of this? "HMRC shows strain after 10 years of woes and losing 40% of staff UK tax authority fears the effect of further spending cuts while introducing modernisation programme" So it appears the same people who cheered in the Austerity policies after 2010 are now complaining about the results. Of course the Tory press will seek to deflect by printing garbage like authorities are afraid of accusations of racism. Just like they do not want to talk about the death ratio from Covid19 in impoverished areas of the country. Just like they would deny the impact of poverty on youth crime, drug use and anti social behaviour. Anything but have their policies analysed in the cold light of reality.

These raids are typically multi agency and would be lead and co-ordinated by the Police, but also in attendance would be HMRC, Salvation Army, maybe interpreters, environment agency and immigration officials, ambulance, fire dept.
The advice seems to be, that if you suspect that this is happening, please contact either the Police or The Modern Slavery Helpline, not HMRC as far as I'm aware.
Nothing to say about modern slavery then? Bit odd isn't it when it seems to be of so much interest in relation to one sector of the community, even though that ended 200 years ago.
No surprise, just normal left wing cognitive dissonance.
Seriously, it's difficult trying to rationalise the thought processes of some people, you want to understand and try to have conversations, debates, but there isn't a consistent position on anything to use as a starting point to engage with.
Any chance of an example of an agency claiming to have too many staff and too much resource, ever?

Enquiring minds need to know. Is it HMRC's responsibility to indentify non compliance with minimum wage regulation? The answer is of course yes, Nothing to do with the Salvation Army, a suggestion which qualifies for the laugh of the year. As for the "Whataboutery" well, nuff said.

Well, that took about 5 seconds of research to kick into the long grass.
Why can't you ever, just once, accept that you are wrong?
Or is it that this Police officer is lying, just to make you look bad.
So yet again, the entire world is wrong, and you are right.
I didn't claim that HMRC didn't have a role in these raids, try reading what I wrote, I told you that they were typically in attendance. So stop making things up.
You don't have an enquiring mind, you never look at any of the reports, studies, data I provide, you just decide what's right, ignore anything and everything that could challenge your presupposition and rant on about it.

Football does have a very warped morality, it’s almost cartoon-ish. Eg players going through the performative concern of taking the knee (I’m sure BLM would prefer a sizeable donation from the player’s wages personally) and yet I was reading today that a PL footballer has written a letter saying he wants to come out but he can’t because he fears the backlash he would get from all these right-on, socially just, footballers! There is also a socio-economic divide in terms of privileged white footballers taking the knee- their lives are so far removed from the daily struggle of poor black people, it has the feel of the royal family in Tsarist Russia going without food for one day in solidarity with the peasants who hadn’t eaten in a week.
