As far as obeying the cops, sound in principle, but the trouble is the cops there have lost the trust of to many of afro American community, who genuinely fear that when stopped the cops will conjure an excuse to shoot them. Rightly or wrongly, but there have been to many examples of exactly that. Anyway the police there do not police by consent, they police by force. That may be so, but refusing to stand still when told to do so, is just handing the police an excuse to shoot you. No need to conjure one. If the police tell someone to stand still, and he refuses to comply, then neither party is behaving by consent. Opening a car door and reaching inside, not only gives the police an excuse to shoot you, but pretty much guarantees their acquittal in any subsequent investigation. The police will simply say that they feared the suspect was reaching for a weapon. Hard thing to disprove. Agree there over here if you get agitated with cops you just get a thrashing with a metal stick, or tasered and if your really lucky you get a face full of pepper spray, problem is if you stay still you still get done over, but and a big but if i was in the us and i was told to not move i wouldn't even breathe too hard. The police here police by force, but thankfully aren't all armed.

The fact it is being treated as normal says everything really. Having vested human interests over there, I find this descent into anarchy on the streets truly frightening. With what appears to be active encouragement from the cops will anyone be surprised if the afro American community do not respond in kind? Especially with a complete asshole in the White House fanning the flames as he desperately tries to hold on to the Presidency. Been to quite a few US states. In NY on the long Island expressway, bridges were built low to the road to prevent black people traveling to NYC on buses. We had a NY cop do his traffic control dance for us, then we saw a different cop staring at a black family in Macy's 10 minutes later. In the southern states like Virginia & Tennessee it's rare to see a US flag (which is very odd compared to northern states) but you see loads of big trucks with Confederate flag bumper stickers. United States of white supremacy.

I am always reminded of the quote "America: The only country that went from barbarism to decadence without any intervening period of civilisation" Not quite true, but very funny and one I use to wind up my American friends.

Yeah there are decent people there, those were just two examples that shocked me. With the current culture war that seems to be playing out there is a genuine feeling of things going backwards.

I would characterise things a little differently. I think we are witnessing the end of white, European, hegemony and a truer representation of the multi cultural society America actually, is. And the Whites don't like it, any more than the anti immigration folks over here do.

Seems a bit more information is coming out. Had a knife in the driver side of the car - presume this is what he was going to his car for after grappling on the floor with two police officers? Also police were called because he was at the girlfriends house when he shouldn’t have been, presumably because of the previous domestic violence incident?
It’s not quite the completely random, innocent victim of police racism and brutality that the media and Governor first shouted from the rooftops igniting riots.

The misleading original reports sold papers, caused riots, which in turn sells more papers. There should never have been a need for him to have been shot 7 times in the back whatever. Policing needs to be better How a 17 year old can illegally carry a weapon across a state line to 'defend' property that isn't even his and kill 2 people is just f**ked up (And that goes for anybody) The whole culture over their needs to change on all sides, but that has to come from the top, from a sensible leader, not a lunatic like Trump with all his NRA backers and the like The 2nd Amendment is probably the worst thing in that country, There are no Good Guys with guns there, just people with guns and varying shades of danger

My point stands that the subsequent events all resulted from the reckless and irresponsible reporting from the media and politicians. On your wider point I agree that the American gun culture is a complete joke but seems beyond repair whichever party is in control.

The BBC going into quite a bit of detail about the 17 year olds history. They didn’t seem so keen to report anything on the history of Floyd or Blake. Can’t think why?

Especially with a complete asshole in the White House fanning the flames as he desperately tries to hold on to the Presidency. With respect the Afro American community have to take some of the blame for what is happening right now. After watching the video a few times I agree with William Wilson. In an era where it is taboo to appropriate someone else’s experience and claim it as our own it is not really surprising that everyone seems able to appropriate the experience of a cop with a live weapon and a suspect who won’t obey orders as he reaches into his vehicle for God knows what and judge them from the safety of their armchairs. It’s easy to say “he should have waited to see what the suspect did” but that scenario must be one of the toughest the human mind can endure and rational decision making Is beset by the panic that you could lose your life in a few seconds. All the training in the world won’t prepare you for when it happens for real with live bullets and an unpredictable target. There is no empathy for that tortured decision making from the protesters though, they don’t care about any other detail apart from white cop, black victim, the rest is just noise and now the town is going to burn and more people are going to die just because the guy would not obey orders and reached into his car. That was the spark in the whole tinder box.

Yeah, I’ve usually got a bit of time for the BBC but this smells of an agenda to me mainly because they hardly said a peep about the black suspects who shot the black retired police officer in the pawn shop after George Floyd’s killing and yet they are all over this clown and trying to attach him to Trump. It seems like they are treating it as a great opportunity.

That was the spark in the whole tinder box. Sounds like in this incident the lady called 911 to report Blake was at her property when he wasn’t supposed to be following a previous domestic violence incident. I would hazard a guess the police computer then tells them of a previous incident where he drunkenly brandished a handgun in a bar and then assaulted a police officer, it may (according to another report I read) refer to an outstanding arrest warrant. They will therefore have been very wary. Blake has resisted arrest, broke free after grappling on the floor with two officers, managed to avoid a taser and went for his car. The cop has been trying to pull him back by his shirt but he still gets to the car so the cop shoots - was 1 or 7 shots necessary I don’t know. Turns out he had a knife inside the drivers door so if the cop didn’t shoot there is surely a good chance he will have been stabbed. A tough choice for the cop, shoot and face jury by media or stand there and be stabbed. Could the whole situation have been avoided? Yes - the police could just ignore emergency calls when there is a BAME perpetrator because you just can’t win. Alternatively, and this is a bit left field Blake could have just done what he was told.

He calmly and methodically went about his business whilst the officers told him to stop. Zero f**ks given from Blake, ambled over the driver’s side door and reached in. Absolutely totally needless.

How does he think he is going to get out of that situation with no-one getting hurt by just doing what he feels like? That’s only going to make things worse....and it did. What’s wrong with refusing to kneel (so you can’t end up prone like George Floyd) and slowly putting your hands behind behind your head so you can be cuffed and taken away?

If he had just done as he was told what is the worst that would have happened? He was the one in the wrong. All this media hype about black people being treated differently by the police is doing nothing but stirring more and more cases of people resisting arrest which leads to more and more bad outcomes. The same is happening in the U.K. but with the police being unarmed the outcome isn’t so deadly, regardless of the circumstances nobody thinks they have to obey a direct instruction from a police officer these days. Constant excuses being put forward for people disobeying the law is helping nobody

The fact he manages to just casually walk to the car and not get stopped by any means seems like poor policing 0-60 in a split second is the problem on both sides of the equation.

The guy had a track record for violence, they tried to apprehend him but he managed to out wrestle two cops and avoid a taser before making his way to the car. Perhaps it was because they were so desperate not to use their guns that he got as far as reaching into the car? Perhaps they should have used their guns earlier? Is there a feeling post Floyd that the police are so far on the back foot and scared of repercussions that there is very little chance of using their firearms?
