It's just been pulled down. I for one hope it gets put back up. No one learns from history by trying to hide it.

I didnt think 'we' were supposed to decide for Black people No doubt it's the same people that enjoy the Harbourside, the same people that live and socialise around the former merchants houses of St Pauls. If they want to eradicate any history of slavery in Bristol then half of the city would be a pile of rubble.

Keep the statute, of course. It's part of our history. But add the following wording to it. "This statue stands here to remind all that the City of Bristol benefitted economically in a huge way from the enslavement and forced labour of African nationals, to our eternal shame" I get a bit wound up by this shame thing- does anyone really feel shame when they go about their business in Bristol? If you can’t stomach that the city was basically founded from the mud by the proceeds of slavery then go and live somewhere else. None of us who were born and grew up there should have to bear an emotional burden of what the likes of Colston did. It’s like asking Germans who were born in the 1980s to feel ashamed about Hitler- totally ridiculous. What we can and should do is learn from history to help us make better choices and ensure that history does not repeat. Far better imo to switch the emphasis on such wording as to stress that the statue serves as an educational tool for people to be kind to *everyone* so that such exploitation and profit from human life never takes place again. Then put up statue(s) of great Bristolian philanthropists or whoever, positive Bristolian role models for kids growing up here. Lastly make it a staple of the curriculum to teach kids about the evolution of Bristol and about how we now understand how wrong that period of our history is. Whilst I agree that the statue of Colston should stay I can’t for the life of me understand why Black Boy Hill is still an actual road name in this day and age. That is a greater issue than the statue imo. Exactly, except for the last part. Blackboy Hill was named after the Black Boy Inn and nowt to do with slavery apparently. www.bristolmuseums.org.uk/stories/bristol-transatlantic-slave-trade-myths-truths/I completely disagree with accepting shame for someone else's behaviour. It is the worst emotion to hold and wrecks lives undeservedly. I wouldn't accept any shame even for what my adult children do because it's their responsibility, once they are an adult and no one else's. It's the same attitude that exists from people about taking on others responsibility when they are quite capable of doing it themselves, some attitudes to accusing others of racism are rooted in this imo. Different story if someone of any race is mentally or physically incapacitated and this is what we do in this brilliant country of ours. Also if we think we should feel shame then we should make every person from every country that has ever committed an atrocity in their history feel eternal shame. Something I would never ever put on someone. To have double standards would be hypocritical.

I hope the police will be studying the footage and taking action against these lowlife scum? I somehow doubt it.

Maybe they are Bristol Universty students who sit in the Wills Building or pop over to Bath to use the Pump Rooms there. Oh the irony and lack of education these dipsticks show.

Agree with the general tone. There are ways to address Bristol’s history but this is not it.
And there was not even any social distancing when trampling on the statue

Hi guys, dont normally get involved in this type of debate, but just saw th statue being felled on th news, i'll just leave this here: "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue & street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped.” George Orwell - 1984
Edit: BTW i have every sympathy for their cause, but this is just wrong and un-lawful and they will lose support from normal folk not gain it, similar to Extinction Rebellion, we all knew they had a point and we wanted to support it, but they ruined other peoples lives, became violent and lost our trust.

Al "Exactly"
Ok, given 200 years have passed (roughly) since that period of slavery What education has taken place since then that has informed subsequent generations that exploitation is wrong and to be resisted? And where specifically have subsequent generations used this knowledge to resist exploitation?
If in doubt, or struggling for an answer, what's your opinion of us in Africa since WW2?

There’s a really good idea posted on Twitter about how we can once and for all sort out Colston:
Work out how much Colston put into the city of Bristol from slavery, in today’s money. The protesters can then pay that money to BLM and assuage their guilt for living in a city founded on slavery.
I’m sure they will be desperate to sign up and pay their own money to make amends...right?

To be fair Jock, have a look at that video again- how many people of colour do you see tearing down that statue? I see a load of middle class hypocrites who probably never even considered the slave trade when they decided to move to Bristol because of it’s universities and high rankings in the “best cities to live” guides.

Not sure about now but i remember it being taught at secondary, however you can educate people about exploitation, but it's the individual or the sheeple who decide how to act. It's human nature to exploit for gain i'm sure we've all done it in our working lives, but there's a line in the sand. For some it's an indicator of having gone a tad too far ,for others its just a line to make more money

It's a beautiful day, the sun is shining and great events have occurred today. A statue I have been pushing to take down for years has been ripped from its pedestal and stamped on by the people. A statue that idolised a person who built his entire fortune off of slave trading hundreds of thousands of black people back in his day. The statue shouldn't have been there to begin with. And that's why it's been torn down. Happy to say I witnessed it in person.
