Okay, so 24 hours later, my full take on the Hanlan signing. I think generally speaking, the signing of Hanlan is a decent one - I think he could really be a rough diamond. From what I've read from Gills fans and comments from coaches/managers it seems he possesses a number of brilliant attributes and, if we can work on him becoming clinical in front of goal, it's likely he could well go on to far better things than Bristol Rovers. However - here's the kicker. Whilst there's every chance we may well develop Hanlan in to a top, top striker - or he might just click, as JCH did - there's every chance that, whilst he will get there eventually, it may well take him months - if not even a year say - to have his finishing coached to the level he becomes clinical/prolific. And that's obviously an "if" - afterall, for every JCH, there's a Tom Nichols. I'm certainly happy enough to role the dice and take a punt on him - but I'd be far more relaxed about doing so if we still had JCH or A. N. Other striker who was our number 1 and likely the be the person to get the 20+ goals a season we will ultimately require. My worry, is that Nicholson might chip in with close to double figures, JML might grab 7 or 8, but other than that most of the goals are going to need to come from our main out-and-out striker. I really like Ayunga and think he will get circa 10 next season, even if he did mainly come on as a sub (assuming Hanlan will be starting). However, that tally isn't going to take us to anywhere near enough goals. And that's what fills me with dread. The biggest criticism that's been levelled at Hanlan (currently) is his finishing ability. That doesn't bode well for someone we really do need to be getting 18+ goals minimum for us next season. And there-in lies the problem - unless he transforms in to a deadly marksmen overnight, we don't really have the luxury of waiting around; if he fails to score regularly, we will almost certainly be near the foot of the table - where else are the goals required likely to come from? Furthermore, that will add enormous pressure on his shoulders, which could go one of two ways - it may actually hinder his development. So nothing against Hanlan personally - I genuinely wish him all the best and certainly believe there could be one hell of a player in there. The question is whether we can score the goals throughout the team whilst he's being coached to a level from which he can then take over that burden. As a result, I really hope we've got someone else with goals in them lined up - but I don't think we do in all honesty. I think that's why my first choice would have been someone like Humphrys (although I accept that if he does want a move up north, that was a non-starter). I largely agree RD, good post. Two points from it that I perhaps have a different take on: if he were to come as a “second choice” striker then he may not get as many opportunities as he will now. I sure if we’d had a JCH-type already we wouldnt have signed him, Ayunga was signed as back up I think. Now he will get lots of opportunities as first choice striker (my presumption that he is). I hope he takes this chance that he has. Secondly, we often talk about getting players at the right time. Often other teams get them then sell them on and we seem to get them one transfer too late, perhaps when they’re in their mid to late 20s. To have got him in his early 20s, the right time imo, perhaps it’s a much better time. As ever no transfer comes with a guarantee but perhaps this one ticks a few more boxes than others sometimes do. Time will tell. Welcome to the gas Brandon. UTG! Good point, Hanlon is probably seeing this move as a stepping stone to the Championship, Nichols and Payne probably saw it as just a move to make some decent money. I can't see most of this summer's signings will be just being content to play mid table football for the rest of their careers.

I’d play a straight back four tell the fullbacks you rarely go past the halfway line , put grant very deep with westbrooke / Hargreaves just in front of him and get the ball forward quickly, tell them to mix it up sometimes wide to Nicholson - JML sometimes straight down the middle to Ayunga- new lad. There you go 4-2-4 fast and attacking with wingers , direct great exciting football. Would get better results than we have since Christmas I’d put my mortgage on it. The return of Bill Dodgin style football...i loved it and one day it will be back in fashion.

We ultimately just missed out each season but it was usually decent football to watch with some great cup runs. And of course that team was the basis for our 73/74 promotion team. UTG!

When your on the front foot it’s 4-2-4 and when you lose the ball it’s 4-4-2. Thing is whenever teams get a man sent off they always seem to revert to two lines of 4 and it is very disciplined and hard to break down. I think the lower you go on the pyramid the more basic tactics and formations seem to work.

Have to say Humphreys, as no one knows whether BG will play a striker, and if so which one? (As he won't play two)..

I wonder if we could get Marcus Stewart in as a striker coach for Hanlan, like he did with Ellis. He's only "reconnecting with family and friends" in Bristol according to linkedin!

Good luck to him. Fingers crossed he can step up his game and become prolific in front of goal for us, we desperately need someone who can!

Holloway had not seen him. Holloway phoned the then Yeovil manager and asked who the best non league striker was, and he said Hayles with out a doubt. Holloway didn't scout him or even watch him. Told me this himself I call bullshit. Holloway was scouting Steve Foster when Hayles caught his eye after giving Fozzie a torrid time. Tell that to Holloway

Think he may have been pulling your leg there. I don't think Ollie ever let the truth get in the way of a good story. The manager of Yeovil at thattime was Graham Robersts, who Holloway knew very well

We've signed a striker who averages a goal every 5 and a half games... Woopty do... He’s just had a very decent first half in the blue and white quarters. Very fast, good hold up play, defenders look twitchy when it goes to him. I like the look of him.
