GC relied 100% on JCH's fitness/goals the only other strikers were Nichols, Reilly & Moore who scored around 5 league goals all together last season, BG's got Hanlan, Daly, Nicholson and Ayunga plus Oztumer can play the No 10 role and Walker's pushing for a place on the bench. As far as our defence being fragile, how many goals have we conceded in the last 4 league games? I assume that’s a reference to the fact that we still give easy chances away- I only listened to the first 50 minutes last night as I had to go out but it sounded like Clarke missed a good sitter late in the first half where he hit the post so it could have gone the same way as the Burton game. Jaakkola’s also had huge saves to make the last two games. Add to that then the chances that Hanlan had, Hare (I think it was), the saves all opposition keepers make, all opposition strikers miss etc. etc. and I think you'll find that is how football goes. Look at Nichols last season (or was it the season before?). How many times did he hit the crossbar? Every game is about missed opportunities, luck and skill in equal measures. Yes Rovers rode their luck last night but the next game maybe the opposition will ride theirs. We are a work in progress but the direction is the right one. I don't expect too much this season but we have a young team and we are building for the future - a future where we can seriously challenge to get into the Championship and hold our own there and not be like Wyscum and by fluke get into that league and now being found out as not worthy.

Shrewsbury looked ropey defensively but we didn’t capitalise on it, we weren’t taking the opportunities we were generating. At the other end of the pitch they were cutting us up. There’s fine lines between sides in the top 6 and sides who will eventually occupy the bottom 6. The only win I’ve seen this season where we truly looked strong to me was Lincoln away. The better sides will take the chances Shrewsbury failed to capitalise on and our chances will dry up. Not saying these don’t count, that they’re not good wins, that it doesn’t demonstrate improvement or that Garner still isn’t capable, just saying let’s not get carried away.

Some fair points, the counter to that argument though is that whilst we might create and miss chances in the same way as the opposition do in the games we have won/drawn we are scoring typically 1 goal a game so it’s a regular occurrence not to take our chances. Therefore giving away a chance where the opposition should score is pretty significant because it could have a very material effect on the game as we don’t often score more than one. It’s the difference between a draw and a defeat, a win and a loss. It wasn’t significant night but it was against Burton. There seems to be a steady progression since the Doncaster game with certain milestones being cleared: first away win, first win without penalty/sending off, the next milestone is to improve our goal average so against the likes of Shrewsbury and Burton we aren’t at the mercy of a potential defensive slip stunting our progress.

The reality is that we are and always will be a work in progress. With JCH Leaving, we had to sign a new striker and adapt to a new way of playing. People forget that Hanlan only joined us on the 10th September and until just over 2 months ago most of the players did not even know each other.

Neither of Leon Clarkes chances were clear cut. The first he did well to get to and the second was such a ridiculous angle it would have taken a very good headerr to get past the keeper from that angle. All the players are comfortable on the ball and played some good football in possession. We are one striker short of a very good side and most players are young and therefore will only get better. Otshumer and Nicholson both looked good when they came on and will add to our creativityy. BG has done an excellent job and we are heading in the right direction. Every team has an off day but we thoroughly deserved the win last night.

I would agree that the header Clarke hit the post with was harder than made out by commentary, who I think are poor commentators, but the 1st one a striker of his quality should have put away but somehow put it wide.

From reading the posts on here it's obvious that some people will never warm to BG. I, for one, have enjoyed watching us this season. No Pointless long ball stuff, but football with a brain. I'd stick with Ben for the long-term for sure.

Yes we’re not winning convincingly at the moment but a few weeks ago we weren’t winning at all ! It’s a slow process.... we’re moving forward step by step with a host of new young ( mainly) players . Winning breeds confidence and hopefully the players are started to gain some . That’s now 4 or 5 games unbeaten. Little steps

As in most things in life In 99% of cases you make your own luck in football.
For example if a player hits a shot and it cannons off the bar that’s not unlucky. It was just not quite good enough to score.
If you lose to a last minute goal it’s not unlucky.
If you have more shots and possession than the opposition but lose that’s not unlucky.
A penalty shootout is not a lottery it’s a test of skill and bottle.
Too many sob story’s from people that didn’t do enough get put down to bad luck.

On the other hand though you could view it as being highly encouraging that despite not having ‘clicked’ with the ball yet and with there still being lots of room for improvement in our possession play, we’ve managed to go to places like Lincoln & Shrewsbury (never easy games) and come away with 6 points. The fact we’re nowhere near firing on all cylinders and still able to pick up wins gives me encouragement more than anything else. Bar the tonking we took at Donny (to what’s increasingly looking like a very strong Donny side), our defensive record is strong & now we’re posing just enough of an attacking threat to edge some games. Hopefully once Oztumer & Nicholson get on the pitch more we’ll be able to grab some more goals.

Seems to me BG is building a squad and a team from that squad which is made up of young men eager to learn and eager to improve and be the best they can be. They seem to be a close knit bunch with a few older heads to help and advise.
I think there is more to come and next season could be amazing. Of course some will move on but it's hoped BG and the team can identify and get good young players in before the departures. Let's hope we can keep hold of Garner for a decent amount of time as well.

I think we do play slightly nicer football under Garner but we don’t create as many chances as we did before he arrived and we haven’t picked up anywhere as good a points to games ratio either. It’s a work in progress but the jury is still out on whether he will go on to have a good points per game ratio by the time he leaves whenever or why ever he leaves. I’m at least looking forward to games again at last because I haven’t been since the turn of the year until last week.

I selected 4 more games after Donny. He's had them and the results are good! I admit that after Donny the stats looked awful since he took over, the performances had been very weak too. I think many of us were right to assume this guy didn't have what it takes. He's proved in the last 4 games that he can manage this team and get us results. Not just results (which imo is the only important factor for a lower league club) but he can actually get us playing attractive football for periods of games.
It's not been amazing by any stretch but we're picking up points and I see the potential with the players, the system and the coaching. Amazing foresight by WAQ!

If we didn't have JCH last year we never would've gotten to 3rd and imo we were never going to sustain that position. Imagine if Coughlan was still in charge now without JCH, the football would be atrocious and we wouldn't have him to bail us out every game. So long as we're getting points on the board I'm all for the new management team, long may it continue. UTG!

It's not an unreasonable notion, because I doubt GC would have incurred BG incredible diabolical form in the last 3 months (of the season), as opposed to the first 3 months. Then, as the season was furloughed, who knows what would have happened? JCH may have stayed with us, and we may have added as much quality because our recruitment is pretty good on paper atm. We were play off contenders under GC. We are yet to get back there as of yet and as much as the last 4 matches have been encouraging, there's alot of work still to do..

It’s hypothetical because he isn’t our manager and to be fair Coughlan signed JCH and he might have signed another striker since he left who would have scored a few this season like Hanlan has. Anyway it doesn’t matter but it’s not like after JCH left we’d be playing with 10 players every week if Coughlan was still manager is it ?

Absolutely he’s managed to turn us in to a team that isn’t great on the eye but can pick up wins. I think that’s what most league 1 managers have to do that haven’t got the biggest budgets for this standard and even a lot of those have to learn how to win ugly to win promotion. League 1 isn’t about pretty football if fans demand that at this level I suggest they buy the new pay per view sky package alongside the champions league BT sport subscription . League 1 is about big center half’s it’s about getting it forward into the oppositions final third and making defenders make mistakes and capitalising when you get your opportunities to score which is what we’ve got and what we’ve done these last few games. Garners learning quickly he had to to save his job. I wonder if we’re in the top 6 at Christmas and still grinding results out the way we have been lately the majority of fans on here will be calling for Garner to go so we can bring in a new manager to play pretty football.

Personally, I think if GC had stayed and we happened to get promoted through the play offs then JCH would have stayed for sure but I don't think GC's methods in the championship would cut it and we'd go straight back down. I have a feeling WAQ's and BG's vision is more sustainable. If we manage to get promoted up to the championship in the next few years we'd have the style of play and structure to be able to stay there. This is all hypothetical and theoretical though... with a dash of blue tinted optimism! There's plenty to be optimistic about though, this squad and the recent results. Hopefully it lasts!

10 points out of 12, front two looking better each game, competition in all places, Ozturk brought in and offers cover upfront. Not sure I would call it lucky, seems more like a well thought out plan. A team that is exciting to watch and well coached will only get better.Whats certain is that its 100% more enjoyable than the rubbish served up by GC (the worse football I can recall in the past 45 years). A bubble that would have burst soon enough. All very good and well, but you still haven't answered my question though? Nothing is ever won after 7 matches. I agree with the holistic view on THIS season's view only, but it's not a coincidence that our recent form has been due to the inclusion of starting 2 strikers and playing them as such (because when we reverted to one through 2 poor sub choices, which I think is BG favoured stance v Burton, we conceded), and effective wing backs (something I was struggling with Little inclusion over Hare despite Little poor form) so it's easy to post something like this with hindsight, but I was referring to what I had seen as evidence with my own eyes. Fair play we look more balanced, and entertaining going forward. I still say we are defensively fragile and are one striker injury away from impotency (I still think we need an experienced striker)..... something GC had wrapped up early in his tenure. But....to cap it off, I am more than happy to move closer to your deluded stance if the evidence continues to suggests this. As ever we'll see, but for 10/12 points in an unbeaten run of 4 matches, well done BG and his team... I re-read your post and am lost on the point you make; are saying you are happy with two strikers now they are both scoring goals but want cover for them? Or that you want a straightforward proven goal scorer to replace JCH. Even more confused by what you mean by my deluded stance. Garner has no doubt looked for a striker that fits his model, with the money made available he can’t find anyone, so I guess he thinks he has cover in Ayunga and possibly Oztumer, Barret, Rodman, Mitchell Lawson or Nicholson. You could argue that he doesn’t know what he is doing and what if there is an injury, in that case we could blame Garner and call for him to be sacked, in the same way Liverpool fans will be calling for Klop to be sacked for starting the season with only three centre halves and not predicting that his no 1 centre half might get injured. Truth is only 6 months ago BRFC were broke, since then the world has gone into recession and clubs are haemorrhaging money. Wael despite taking a year of abuse from a bunch of muppets, stumped up his cash paid of the debts and started to deliver on his promise of evolution not revolution. Building a club for the future including building the training ground he promised. We sold a striker and made a pretty penny we have kept the money perhaps to cover loss of income and to keep us in the black going forward. If Garner had identified the striker, he wanted then Wael I suspect would back him. But why throw money away on a striker that the manager feels won’t be good enough. I wonder if you were clamouring at the time to sign Payne or in fact just to sign anyone. Yes we need to strengthen with the right striker but the sky isn’t going to fall in if we haven’t found the right one in fact if we have two strikers capable of getting 12-15 goals a season and a midfield with plenty of talent then are we no longer the same one trick pony as we were under GC.
