I passed him at Fulham. He was guest of honour. As we passed I held my hand out and he shook it. Think I have touched the hand that touched the hand of God. I thought I would feel different, but I didn't You are so Craven

He was one of a trio of greatest footballers of all time along with Pele and Messi. Daft to compare them really and they'll take some beating. I preferred Pele's silky smoothness to the Argentinians' similar jinky technique. He scored over 1000 goals in his career!

So we are now dismissing people just because they've taken recreational drugs? I guess we should all dismiss The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac etc all because they've taken drugs while writing and recording great songs and albums? What about Movie stars? Diego Maradona is the greatest Footballer to have played the game, lets all just dismiss that because he sniffed Coke or got a Drugs ban for taking Ephredine which is used to treat Asthma and breathing difficulties? C'mon. Oh, and all those bands are sh** with the exception of the Stones. I suppose you support Black Lace Matters.

Puskas. 598 goals in 619 appearances for club and Country. 156 goals in 180 appearances for Real Madrid. Eusebio. 465 goals in 500 appearances for club and Country. Both I would suggest should be included in any greatest list. Maradona. 293 goals in 582 games.

It has people overlooking the likes of Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Garrincha, Baresi, Matthaus etc. If you want to use goals to imply someone is better or worse than someone then add Pepi Bican to your list 762 goals in 516 games for club and countries.

Yes a great footballer. RIP I suspect deciding about who’s the best footballer ever depends largely on your age. I think Pele was the best ever and won 3 World Cups spread over 12 years and was deliberately kicked and injured in the one he didn’t win in ‘66. Those older than me would consider di Stefan and Puskas who I never saw. For Messi to be placed higher than Maradona or Pele would need him to win a World Cup which he won’t. It’s probably old-fashioned but for Maradona to be the greatest he would need to have shown more respect for the game. He saw the game purely about him and what he did. His actions on and off the pitch showed little respect. Pele on the other hand spread the game, played the game in the right spirit despite his treatment in 1966 and was the best player over a long period of time. Not even an argument about it for me, but that’s just my opinion.😉 UTG! Amen to that Wareham, could not have put it better.

There are many great players that have played our game and typical of the media to put Maradona out there as possibly the best ever. He was great but only one of many.

Of course, goals aren't everything, but I think over 1000 in a career needs mentioning

The FIFA World Cup Organising Committe concluded that he didn’t take the drug to enhance his performance. Again good enough for me. Ah, FIFA. The bastion of truth and fair play. A bit like yourself Hugo 🙂 You're clearly still bitter about a handball in 1986. Argentina hated us because of the Falklands, and who could blame them, it was beat us at all costs, they did, and went onto win the World Cup. Diego Maradona also liked a line, again so what, plenty of others do to. He had flaws, again so many other mavericks and geniuses in their fields do, it's what makes them who they are. Diego Maradona was a great, and for me the greatest of them all.

I think people underestimate the effect Maradona had on Argentina. This was a country that had lived under a military Junta that had seen over 30,000 Argentines go missing, a completely futile war that saw 650 young men killed and saw the whole country lied to about the result, they had moved into democracy under Alfonsín in 1983 but the country was still deeply scarred. Many questions were asked of the legitimacy of the 1978 World Cup win, especially with the 6-0 win against Peru. Maradona and 1986 gave the country back it's pride, the belief that they could be great again. In Argentina the only people to get close to Diego are the Perón's. He stood up for the poor because, he was poor. He wasn't a ruling class, he wasn't elite, he was a boy from a barrio that could play football. He never forgot where he was from and that was shown in his approach to life. He absolutely made mistakes and was not in anyway perfect but carrying the weight of a nation is a pretty big burden, he did it beautifully.

He often suggested that divinity influenced football matches, and I'm not sure someone so religious would use gods name in jest....

This debate has been going on and will continue as long as football is played , at the end of the day its all about opinions and just like every other topic on here people will be divided. what can not be argued though is that he was an exceptional footballer and he was a cheat. He possibly won a world cup through cheating and that's either ok ' that's part of the game' or not, depending on your view point. As for the hand ball no doubt he was surprised he got away with it but having done so i am yet to hear of a player saying to the ref ' no goal ref i handled it'. I suppose it depends on what kind of person you are as to whether you feel comfortable with cheating but it does not appear to have bothered Maradona in the slightest, he was a national hero because of it and was not going to tarnish that image! If you play cricket and nick one to the keeper but umpire gives not out, then go on to make a hundred ,how would you feel knowing you cheated? many players would walk as they know the truth but some wouldn't using the excuse that its the umpires job not the batsman's. Same with golfers who improve ther lie in the rough or in sand, i have even played(badly) with players who's ball changes colour in the rough or trees! Its a personal thing but once its known you are a cheat you lose a lot of respect. As for the game we all follow well its full of cheats is it not?. Its evident in every game you watch and accepted as ' part of the game' RIP Diego, some great memories but i can not rank you at the very top, just my opinion.
