Obviously I would NEVER condone or support this idea but a large loss of post 70 people is pretty good in terms of government spending. The elderly cost a lot in healthcare and services and crucially are the biggest welfare recipients by an absolute mile. Those of working age as we’ve seen, rarely need hospital treatment but there would be a cost to that, working disruption etc. I would be surprised if it was anywhere near as much as lockdown costs. However, morally this isn’t acceptable. What’s the point of anything if it isn’t to keep our loved ones? Dont you think complete collapse of the NHS would be catastrophic for the Country and economy! ! When people think purely in terms of the death toll they forget that even less than 1% of the population being seriously ill is enough to overwhelm hospitals and stop critical services being provided to people who need them. Look at the guy who had to beg for an MRI scan because covid meant resources couldn’t be spared. By the time he got one he had terminal cancer. That’s the damage to healthy people of covid being allowed to run rampant through the population. The hardcore capitalists in this thread would no doubt ideally prefer that anyone with covid requiring a ventilator be sent to a leper colony so we don’t have to look at them and tie up NHS resources the young and fit can be using getting their stomach pumped after yet another mental night out. You can bet though that when these hardcore capitalists turn 60 they won’t be offering to take themselves off to Dignitas to save John Q Taxpayer some bunce, oh no. |

Its about a proportionate response. But nobody said it was harmless, merely the chances of dieing are tiny which is correct.......or do we all have stick by the same narrative ? I'm not talking about whether it's harmless or not, I'm trying to convey to you why your analogy didn't make any sense. I absolutely agree my analogy wouldnt make sense if the previous comments in question were belittling the affects of COVID on victims, but it wasnt, so consequently not sure what you are on about. Quoting facts should not be hurtful to anybody, and hence my analogy demonstrates how ridicouloius it is to try and close down genuine discussion for fear of upsetting somebody. |

I’m not sure what I’m supposed to take from this, I read it and yes, being a nurse comes with heartache and yes, some people are dying. Other than tugging at heart stings or making us go “wow. What a tough job they have, I’ll clap and help them get a pay rise” as is the BBC’s intent, I don’t know what 4 anecdotal accounts are supposed to add to the debate. the BBC aren’t known for their objectivity these days, you might as well be posting morning star links. |
