China will just move in and buy up Afghanistan just like they are with much of Africa. The Belt and Road Initiative is progressing. Perhaps the Chinese will pay a fair price and not wage war on the Taliban? rather than the Americans (and previously Europeans) who like to facilitate a coup to drive prices down and maximise profits. |

Somehow I doubt that, more to the point the money won't filter down to the ordinary people. Still, it's not being exploited by the West so all good. 😑 Did the US sanctioned mass opium production trickle down to the Afghans? Or did the corrupt government keep the left over cash? It's already been reported that many Afghans welcomed back the Taliban as they were fed up with government corruption, and the Afghan president is accused of fleeing with £123m state funds. The brutal Taliban actually prohibited opium production in 2000, only for the US to invade and ramp up production to unseen levels? Have to wonder if the Chinese will still be interested in opium after what the English did to China in the 1800's? |

Opium was one of the few lucrative crops grown in Afghanistan, it's what kept local farmers going. Is anything not the fault of the US, UK or the West in general? Has the Soviet Union or China done anything wrong? In the meantime stories of retribution are filtering out. |

They are pulling out because Trump wanted the Doha deal and withdrawal to get a foreign policy victory for electoral purposes. Biden is following that through, badly too. It also saves money and American lives which goes down well in the US. As for the mining, probably, although the Taliban high command will get their share. I still see Chinese mining companies moving in at some point, though. |
