There has been ongoing issues between Russia and Ukraine for several years now, towards the end of 2021 the tensions had risen somewhat. It may just be more of the same but it could escalate quite easily.
The 3 Baltic states are both NATO and EU members and all have sizeable Russian minorities.
Belarus is termed the last dictatorship in Europe, there have been border issues with migrants being 'allowed' across its border with the EU.
Armenia and Azerbaijan had a conflict recently too, plus Russia and Georgia have tensions over a couple of enclaves.
Moldova has a breakaway region too in their Transnistria region.
Now Kazakhstan is calling in help from Moscow to quell its uprisings.

Putin as ever is a very good strategist……. He’ll push things as far as he can taking into account the current circumstances. He knows when to push and that’s why he’s trying it on now.

The world needs another superpower, the technological advances we made when the USA and USSR were competing against each other at everything have not been matched since.
Now we just have billionaires having space race willy waving competitions.

Soviet Union, would you have it back? The CCCP tops are pretty cool. I'm sure the USA would love to have the Soviet Union back. A definite 'enemy' they can pretend to hate instead of all these maverick dictatorships with rusting and leaky missiles they might just launch at any time whenever their unstable regimes identify a new foe. This freedom from tyranny lark is all very nice in theory, but it doesn't half create a lot of problems once you actually give a bit of power to the local tyrants. |

This could all be sorted if Russia joined NATO.

Looks like we are withdrawing our training teams from Ukraine. On a (selfish?) practical note, probably worth topping up your fuel tanks and investing in an electric heater.
If Putin really is going ahead, it's going to get very messy.
Hopefully he's just testing the resolve of the West and Ukraine and we'll carry on with the sabre rattling. He won't be able to keep 100,000+ troops on the border for too long.

It takes time to get them there, Putin will know well in advance and it therefore gives him cassus beli. Secondly, who will provide them? Ukraine isn't a Nato country so there is no reason to defend it with Nato troops. Again, Putin knows we won't go to war over Kyiv. Thirdly, most of Europe doesn't have either the numbers or equipment to be a serious deterrent to invading Ukraine. Russia overmatches us by quite a bit. |

We weren't (Ukraine won't be joining Nato or the EU) and I'm not convinced that's his problem anyway. It's Ukraine looking west rather than east. |
