The French need to have a word with themselves. 48% might vote for the Putin apologist Le Pen 🙄

Quite a turnaround if this map is anywhere near accurate. Sorry if anyone else has mentioned this before because I haven't read the whole thread, but I've thought that this whole war might be a means to an end. Namely control of Eastern Ukraine and the sizeable Russian-sympathising population there, and more importantly a direct Russian territorial link to Crimea. The war might be an tactic to 'withdraw' and settle for much less than control of the whole country, which perhaps Putin never really wanted anyway. Just the bits he needed.

That was my initial thought before this started, however the way the assault went in it was pretty clear they were going for a decapitation of the government with the view to installing a puppet regime. I've lost the link but one of the major analysts (forget if it was RUSI, IISS or another) had detailed their thoughts based on leaked plans back in January, it had Russia taking the east and the whole coast, leaving a very much reduced and landlocked Ukraine. I suspect the way events have transpired have caused a significant rethink with Plan B (more accurately Plan D or even more) what you and I suggested, that is a corridor through to Crimea. There is a major Russian national day coming up on 9th May, it wouldn't surprise me to see that as a deadline to declare victory, even just in domestic PR terms. Maybe even as soon as Mariupol falls. It seems that they are pulling forces from the far east and the Caucuses, recruiting Syrian and African mercenaries, recalling the Wagner Group and fast tracking officer cadets to replace losses.

Investigation into possible use in Mauripol. That's got to be worthy of a huge response surely? It is but we ( nato etc) won’t do anything . Our red lines are not really our red lines.

Send everything in, launch everything and destroy it. I understand your frustration, I really do, but it's not going to happen. Not a Nato member, We blinked over Syria when it was just us, the US and France, let alone convincing all members to take part, We don't have the numbers or command and control ability unless the US takes part. Russia has thousands of nuclear weapons. However, if he crosses into Poland or the Baltics then all bets are off. That's the red line.

We don't need to flatten Russia just push them back over the Ukrainian border, I can't honestly see it would take that much effort as the Russian military is so tin pot.
