If their woman’s team average the same as us it makes a mockery of us lmao. You’re forgetting that you can get big crowds when you give tickets away for free or next to nothing. One game is a professional business and the other is a form of activism!

No I get that - and womans football has improved massively in the last few years and I'm all for it, but purely from a "rival" point of view regardless of tickets etc we still offer a better product - if they average the same as us over a season it would be embarrassing.

The difference is they give tickets away for virtually nothing whereas you have to pay £20+ at the Mem, plus you get to sit in a decent stadium rather than stand/sit at the Mem. What it does show is there are a massive number of people prepared to watch live sports in Bristol.

Worrying times if their womans team do start getting 7000. Worrying for who? not for us, the two games are totally different and i can't see us losing fans to a woman's team, if they do average 7000 and that is a big if , it will because they attract new fans to the game ,especially girls/ladies , and not because fans desert Rovers.

Explain. “The women’s game emerged out of nowhere due to a huge groundswell of support. Despite the media blackout on all coverage, the game has managed to pull in customers. It’s lacked any kind of investment and has consistently turned profit and forced itself into the publics eye despite the attempts of misogynist dinosaurs who’ve refused the additional income to further their twisted sexist desired to ensure no women are allowed to play football. It takes brave people to stand up to this tyranny and thankfully the game has allies who courageously fight the power to ensure the woman’s game gets an equal footing in the face of the incredible hostility of media outlets and the complete lack of promotion it’s suffered”

About 10 years ago the telly decided cycling and Olympic sports were the current thing, about 2-3 years ago it was women’s football were all now supposed to like because….well, TV says so! Good luck to those playing the game who enjoy it but am I f going to hop on the bandwagon! I got a bit sus when BBC kept running articles like “Arsenal sack management team with immediate effect” and then you click in and realise it’s the ladies team. Either done to raise interest in the game or to justify coverage by claiming they get huge click counts. Either way, it’s not the game I have an issue with, it’s people deciding they’re gonna change the world and expecting me to pretend I’m extremely interested in things I’m only mildly interested in!

That would apply to a lot of things in the commercial world that you would normally like. 😉 Over the past couple of decades the terrestrial TV companies have lost their monopoly to cover major sporting events, the BBC for example have lost football, golf and F1, so are looking for cheaper alternatives. Those sports you mentioned did raise in their popularity due to the Olympics and TV wanted a slice of that. Same with the women's game. Rather than be cynical of an agenda, you should really be embracing their entrepreneurial spirit of taking a small sport and increasing its marketability. 👍

Just saw an advert for 6 nations sponsored by Guinness with the tag line "never settle" which I thought was quite clever. Closer to home, there was an article saying that City's women team are hoping for an average 7,000 crowd at AG next season. Hopefully the club will help promote the Gas Girls more next season and they can continue the rise up the leagues. Who knows, if the popularity continues the Gas Girls may be playing in the top women's league at the fruit market stadium. In the short term it would be good if they could play a game or two at the Mem next season. It's baffling how City expect 7,000 gates as that more than we've managed to attract in recent years, although how is the pitch going to hold up to 3+ games a week, when the Mem's struggled this season with just one game a week. Not sure of spelling but they have a deso pitch, cost SL a fair few quid but it’s certainly looked just fine with the rugby and football. EDIT, i should have read the previous comments as this had already been explained

If their woman’s team average the same as us it makes a mockery of us lmao. Many will be family and friends and others will be those who maybe do not attend other football matches. I do not see how it could make us look, in any way, poor as it’s, more than likely, a different demographic.

It wasn’t before though was it? Only after the huge investment and blanket coverage - and giving away free tickets, now, after all that, it’s popular. I like snooker but it’s a dying game. If you put snooker centre stage 24/7 and gave a vast amount of grants and money to it, it would be back in the big time. It isn’t. Someone, somewhere decided that woman’s football was to be anointed and propped up with money. Olympic sports same boat. Need other peoples money to exist. Hence that I know that the groundswell in support is manufactured rather than organic, I’m abstaining. I see it the same as any other product which relies heavily on promotion and advertising. I’m not buying anything off a marketing campaign and I’ll stick to what I found interesting from my own will and endeavour and not what’s the current new thing .

I’m the one being expected to buy a product which was unable to pull in interest before heavy investment. I don’t much care for Neville Shute as an author. Should £100M be ploughed into promoting his books, I would feel no need to buy them nor aclaim the work of the publisher. I would still see the books as not to my taste, and those suddenly buying them off the back of the campaign as weak minded. This is all a bit deep. If people like it and it makes them happy, good luck to them. I just strongly suspect the entire point of singling out women’s football as the annointed sport was borne of a notion of promoting EQuality rather than a AQuality product. And the notion of watching something for 90 mins in support of a moral standard seems pointless. Morality is an abstraction. Hence you will see the issues for me are not in the activity itself it’s more the narrative surrounding it and almost a presumption we have a moral duty to hand in our dignity and cheer something virtually none of us had interest in 10 years ago because someone else decided we now should do, lest we be deemed morally defective if we don’t. Or, it’s just another good form of football and I’m over analysing again. You never know.

To be fair - your quote it ‘needs other peoples money to exist’ - what like men’s football?, where would we be without being constantly propped up by our generous owner? I get your point but it just depends on your view point how you argue it. I agree it has been helped by more exposure but many things require that bit of help to encourage more equality and diversity. 👍🏾
