I have the programme for Geoff's testimonial match in which, if memory serves, Geoff was injured and did not play. The teams listed are: for Rovers Bernard Hall, Doug Hillard, Gwynfor Jones, Terry Oldfield,Joe Davis, Ray Mabbutt, Harold Jarman, Brian Clark, Alf Biggs, Bobby Williams, Bobby Jones. An International X1: Ron Springett, EddieMcCreadie, Marvin Hinton, Mick mcNeil, Ian Ure RonnieClayton, Alan Skirton, Bryan Douglas, John Atyeo, Frank Blunstone, Mike Summerbee. Names to remember for some of us. That was it....

Watched both players on many occasions in the late fifties/sixties. Ateyo was your typical old fashioned centre forward, a real fox in the box and rightly deserves his highly regarded status. Bradford was a really skilled much more all round player who could dribble and beat his man as well as being deadly in the area. In my opinion Geoff was the better all round footballer, but John was deadly anywhere around the six yard box, hence his scoring record. Morning fella, am i right in thinking it was more the norm for fans to go and watch both teams home games or was it just a select few, i ask because we were always taken to both, up until one of us made the choice to pick the one ? I chose Rovers because the atmosphere was better, it was easier to get to and i just enjoyed the gallows humour at Eastville. I never took to going to AG but it wasn’t like i had a choice, given i would have been less than 10 at that time Yes Jules , me and my mates use to go alternate grounds depending on who was home. Like others have said we supported our team, in my case the Rovers even though I was born and lived on Bedminster down overlooking Ashton gate. Never had a problem, different culture then. As we got older we joined the supporters club and attended away games following the Rovers, as you know we weren’t called gasheads then.

Thank you as i had never really asked anyone else although, living very close to Bobby Jones, i remember him talking and with good knowledge, on the reds

I seem to remember chatting about this, in the SC bar and someone saying that he did it illegally

Doesn't that count as child abuse? I was dragged once to a City game v Plymouth when I was about 11 and hated every minute of it, especially the aggro between the 'teds and Argyle fans. At that stage there had never been any aggro at Eastville (we made up for it later unfortunately!). I did, however, find half a crown someone had dropped which was a decent amount back in about 1963! (That's 12.5p for you younger viewers!)

Thanks again as i have the photos with him, Peter Aitken and Sandy Allen ( sp) and i seemed to remember this being discussed, with a wry grin on Jarman’s face. I seem to remember him saying he would not sign any papers until the season was over and had to be creative to get passed the then rules and regs, a really funny guy who was easy to talk to and full of funny anecdotes

I used to get taken to Rovers and City games as a young child, as you say, it was not unusual - or was that Tom Jones? I only went to Ashton Gate to watch City play once (not including when Rovers have played there).. I would have been 14 years old and Bryan Robson had been my favourite player for Man Utd/England - but was now player/manager of Middlesbrough in the 2nd tier. I somehow persuaded my old man to take me to go to AG to watch City vs Boro (which had become something of a second or third team to me at the time; due to the Robbo association) and, despite being a massive Gashead (we used to go to Twerton every home game), he agreed. Boro won 1-0 and I was delighted (to see City lose and Robbo's Boro win) - but it felt very wrong to be in the home end. Especially watching my Dad forced to make conversation with the locals Boro got promoted that season and City got relegated - so a happy ending all round (but would have been happier if Rovers had replaced City in the 2nd tier - but y'know.. Huddersfield )
