I see Sam Smith hasnt joined anyone yet following the end of his Cambridge contract. Could be a good signing instead of this one? Decent age to sell on as well I completely agree, would be the better signing of the two IMO. Been linked with a move to Plymouth though….

Wasn't Smith meant to be going to Pompey until they pulled out because of his wage demands? I'm at the point of the window where all the stories are starting to blend into one so I might be mixing him up with any of the 72,000 players linked to teams in our league in the last month or so.

"Pompey are now set to shelve their plans to make an attempt to sign Smith this summer due to the fact they wouldn't be able to guarantee him first-team football, with Colby Bishop being Mousinho's undisputed first-choice in a lone striker role" footballleagueworld.co.uk/update-emerges-on-portsmouths-apparent-transfer-interest-in-14-goal-efl-forward/I imagine wages also played a part though

Smith is a good player. 35 goals over the past 2 seasons in L1 for Cambridge.
He's 4 years and 8 months younger than May so approaching his prime and could still be sold for a profit in 2-4 years time.
However, he's available on a free after leaving Cambridge which means he'll have LOTS of offers from L1 clubs and probably a few from the Championship.
He would be a great signing but I think he'll have better offers unfortunately.
As for May, I can't remember Rovers ever signing a striker who has scored 20+ goals in each of the past 2 seasons in L1. Have we ever?
Okay, due to his age, there might not be much sell on value when he leaves, but his goals could be the difference between finishing mid table or top 6.
Personally I'd be delighted with either but feel May is a more realistic target.

Depends on the fee we got for Collins I suppose. If someone offered us £3M+ for Collins and we could get Smith for free and May for £300k then I'd say that was pretty good business. Personally, I hope Collins stays, and if we can sign May we'll have one of the best attacks in L1.

Wael and Joey have already said in separate interviews that the playoffs are the target. Said a few weeks ago. Any chance of a link to Wael's interview as the last one I can find is back in April where he just discussed the FM/South Stand Really wish I could remember where it was said so I could link it. I'm sure it was on Radio Bristol after the end of the season with Geoff. He defo said it though and I remember thinking it was a bit of a statement. It was before Joey said about it

Decent age to sell on as well I'd imagine Smith is looking for a far better deal than May given both his age and goal scoring record. Plus convincing May to move to a club a short trip down the M5 is probably far easier than getting a player to move to the other side of the country.

Don't agree - Players go anywhere for the right money - Any country is seems

That's the end of that then! I never really thought he would sign for us.

I was in contact with TG this afternoon, mentioned incoming players and he said he had been very busy this summer and there was lots more to do. Read intp that what you will.

Charlton seems the most obvious. Shows they're going for promotion. If we watwd promotion enough then this is the sort of signing we would go for.

Who knows which players the club are genuinely after. Can't make players sign for you if they're wanting to go elsewhere or have been offered better than what we can budget for
