So if its better than a promotion team and better than a team that blew promotion what is your measurement for success this season. If Barton doesn't get us up, is he a failure? Not necessarily. Other clubs may gave better teams too. The size of clubs ending up in League 1 are generally bigger now as well. In the last 10-15 years Leeds, Forest, Leicester, Norwich, Southampton, Sunderland, Sheffield Weds and United, Ipswich, Charlton and now Derby have all found themselves in the 3rd tier. So again hard to compare. I looked back at the division as it finished that year. Ten clubs that competed in that division, that year, are or have been in the Championship or Premier league since then, many consistently. I think I am right that our best position since then has been 12th. So on that metric it's as much about our own decline than about relative strengths.

I think I am right that our best position since then has been 12th. So on that metric it's as much about our own decline than about relative strengths. Of course we have declined, no doubt about that. Again back in the late 80's when Gerry Francis took over and we were playing at Twerton it wasn't holding us back, as Wimbledon and Oxford were getting to the top flight in similar grounds, Cambridge also came close to getting promoted to the top flight as well. Fast forward 30 years and The Mem in comparison, moving with the times is far worse than us playing at Twerton back then, The Mem is the main reason for our decline. We've seen Reading, Wigan, Cardiff, Swansea, Hull, Brighton, Brentford all fly past us because they've improved facilities and infrastructure. So it's an almighty struggle for us to compete with those clubs of similar stature to ours, let alone the likes of Leeds,Leicester,Sunderland Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich and Derby who all can still pull in 25k-30k supporters even in the 3rd Division when we're still knocking about in a dilapidated old Rugby ground. It can be done as Bournemouth and Luton have shown but it's far more difficult for us to compete now with our facilities than ever before.

You can ask the same question of any Rovers squad over some 100 years , doubt no one squad would dominate the best ever with 1 or 2 from here and there and plenty of very good squads with none which would not necessarily diminish the quality of that squad. You are correct of course. I'm 50 so I've seen decent squads and players before. I suppose Gassy is correct to say this may be the best we've had in 20 years. I was Gassys age when we blew promotion under Holloway. I forget sometimes that many fans won't remember them. It's longer ago than I thought! What 50! Hugo The Elder indeed! a 'young' whippersnapper! ( interesting debate though with no definitive conclusion!)

I think the turning point was Reading, after the defeat Ollie gave the players some major stick, and the team never recovered , just one more win. Don't think at that stage of his career Ollie was very good at handling pressure. Agreed. That was the pivotal game.

Dave Pritchard getting a season ending injury was also the nail in the coffin Pritch, Ronnie and Simon Bryant. It was only going to go south with those three out. Of course, some drone on and say we deliberately messed up and star strikers weren't interested. Yawn.🏴☠️

I think Caskey was playing slightly wide . Poor Tilly was running around like a giraffe.

However much i try to forget it just never goes away, the excitement of the madejski and us, seemingly going to go up and as champions. I can’t remember specifics but i did not get home until 7 am next day as the OB closed off the outside of the ground, to avoid both sets of support bumping into each other and me and one other had to try and find a way through, ended up on some industrial estate and then we knew our bus would be gone. I seem to remember Preston beating us at home and thinking we we not as good as i though we were

We took 3000 at least they had about 20 in the ground ( you know what I mean ). Outside typical Cardiff everywhere side streets : industrial estates and played terrible. Awful day !.

Does that article suggest that Posh haven't had a single offer of either player?

Took ages to get a parking space and to top it all, the missus wasn't impressed and I was in the dog house for a while. ☹️

He's not signing... a champ club will take a punt Think we would be better off getting on the phone to Boro trying to persuade them that the best thing for Coburn’s development is to see if he can maintain form for the whole season at a promotion chasing L1 club rather than getting the odd five minute cameo off the bench at championship level when the game is already won or lost.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave Posh, if we want him enough, I'm sure it could happen.
Their own was on TalkSport a couple weeks ago saying how they want to bring through more of their own players.
