Well done to DC. I remember taking to him in the carpark after a defeat a totally open conversation. Total respect for him

Gerry first time for me still. Gerry for me too, DC firmly in 2nd. Although he was only manager for just over a year Denis Rofe had us playing the best Football and probably the best Rovers team I've seen. If he was appointed before the season instead of Martin Dobson we could very well of got promoted into the new Premier League. He maybe in my top 3. Great shout on Dennis Rofe, had some unbelievable results under him. Turning over a 3-1 first leg deficit against City at Ashton. Beating a Kenny Dalglish managed Blackburn, draws against Liverpool and Man City, away days at both plus Forest. I also think that the Trollope and Lawrence partnership is massively underrated by our fan base. Millennium Stadium and Wembley in the space of two months, beating City to get to the former, plus the cup run the following season, only time since the 50s to get to the FA Cup quarters. Agree with Dr F, the best pure footballing team I’ve seen was David Williams, if play offs existed we’d have made them in both seasons he was in charge. For sheer will to win it would be Gerry Francis and for man management DC.

The games you mentioned, plus 5-0 against Plymouth in the FA Cup which set up the games v Liverpool, 4-1 wins against Southend and Brighton. We were superb at home, scoring lots of goals. Think we finished 12 points off the Play Offs, after a disastrous few months under Martin Dobson.

Much as I liked Gerry F mark 1 and Don Megson, and indeed others, the DC promotion back into the League gets him my all-time favourite vote. We might still be in that league, playing Oxford City (no disrespect to them) but for DC. Rovers 3 City 0 , then Blackpool away. The best times as a Gashead EVER . Nobody can argue with this. Certainly not arguing with that! With GF after the Blackpool game and possibly Robin Perry from the Post

Did we have a long stretch of 2-1 wins during the run in or is my memory playing tricks? Yep , 7 or 8 in a row i think 🤔 I just had a look, as I was at most of these games, it was 6 in a row in the league , but we played Notts county twice in the cup during this run. Fulham a Bury h Cardiff h Northampton a Wigan a Chester h

With GF after the Blackpool game and possibly Robin Perry from the Post Totally agree, the best time ever, beating the sh*t on a balmy night, then travelling to Blackpool, gave them a spanking, invaded the pitch, Gerry and the boys started the party up on that flat roof, singing GNI, fantastic. Still blame Vic Callow for the penalty he should have given. Not that I bear grudges for decades of course.

Tranmere usually played home games on a Friday night but this game was most definitely played on a Monday night.Cant remember why that was but it was another game where we came from a goal down ( very early one I seem to remember ) to win 2-1.

I haven't got that info, but I think you're right, a lot/most or all of them we were definitely 1-0 down.

But those two years in ‘15 and ‘16 with DC has to be up there for sheer relief and sheer happiness in following seasons. The football under David Williams when Eastville was falling down around him has to be up there in levels of achievement against the odds. But I’ll keep my loyalty to Don M and the 73-74 team. From the opening win at AFCB I knew we were going up and despite the hiccup in March it was never in doubt. (And when you’re a teenager that kind of sticks with me.) And because of that it lacked the surprise and pure joy of what DC did. Esp as in Summer ‘14 it almost seemed it was the end of us as a league club. I guess who you think is the best manager is partly a generational thing. Old farts like me may well think it’s DM whilst others go for Gerry or DC. Whatever, we’ve had some great managers for us and lots of several special seasons and moments. Probably more than most PL clubs. Good luck DC, I hope you can save Cheltenham. 👍 UTG!

It has to be David Williams . Just 28 years old player manager in charge for 108 games with a 47.2 % win ratio in the equivalent of League 1. No play offs in those days or we would have made them every season he was in charge. Gerry Francis win ratio was just under 40% and DC was 42.3%.

The damage to the opposition that team would have done on these modern pitches.
