I can't see the money being available to demolish and rebuild the East stand, but it could be extended in a way that could be attractive. Maybe like Wrexham's Mold Road stand, which looks pretty good: I think it looks awful I agree, looks horrible. Also doing something like that wouldn't be practical. The pitch level is a way below the turnstile level. The current east stand would need seats extending down to the pitch. The existing angle of the east stand would mean the pitch would need to move as the seats would come to beyond where the existing touchline is. This would also limit any future development of the west stand. And doing all of the above would probably be far more expensive than demolishing the current east stand, putting a similar structure to the south stand, full width, behind the terracing, making the terracing safe standing and putting a large roof over the lot.

Hear me out... Funds allowing, could we be doing a more sustainable partial demo and rebuild, keeping as much as possible of the existing structure for sustainable and money reasons as well as allowing existing seating to stay in use? Begin work on the ground works behind the terracing (south end easier). Build up the structure to the height of the existing stand. Then replace or extend the roof. This way would look like one stand not the Carlisle mess (though I'd take that over 15 more years of nothing!)

I think a lot of people are analysing his words but forgetting that English isn’t his natural language. To me, it sounded like he got his words muddled up when talking about the east stand

I think I agree with everyone who interpreted HA words to mean we are going to build either side of the existing East Stand and the North end and I think in the meantime this is how we are going to cut our cloth. It'll be better than we have had in the 30 years since being at the Mem and he's just ending the dicking around and I applaud that. I don't think we are spending tens of millions so let's be practical and base the refurb on the South Stand and retrofitting what we have.
Practically I think we can do something pretty tidy at the North end which could probably incorporate a standing terrace with seats over the top (concourse facilities below) using the modular build method of the South Stand but the East Stand is tricky. The trouble with keeping it is that it's been built wrong! the angle of the stand is wrong, the leg room is sh**e and the sight lines are awful. How is any good (or sh**e!) designer going to try and incorporate that base problem into a new stand without it looking awful?!
I think they may try initially and end up binning it off and starting again. Lets see.

I 100% agre with that. It is a shed. A good temporary solution whilst thatchers end is rebuilt. East Stand > North Stand > West Stand by the time they get back to the South Stand then that'll probably be another decade gone. As the club has always said in the past that redeveloping the Mem is not viable, how has it suddenly become viable for the new owners? The South and is a bang for buck expansion. gives the seats at fair price. Had we done it professionally (local stakeholder engagement etc) it would have been quick. I guess, once the detail comes out for the East Stand, there will be enough information for fans to decide if it's short/medium/long term. If we are considering long term, then clearly the East will be a very nice structure and incorporate new hospitality and the player changing facilities etc. this would then free up the west stand to be developed if it were ever needed. remember, we had PP for all but 20k so we know it fits on the site.

Well it is needed ASAP. The stand looks like a cricket pavillian. Parts of it are held together by rust with a vast amount dropping on peoples heads over the course of a season. Its a bloody eyesore.

It was put up as a freebie in 1988 as part of the deal for the land the developers bought an option on which because Trubshaw Close. And the execution of that stand has entirely been done like its a freebie. Just needs bulldozering to the floor and starting again.

I could be wrong but didn't we once get planning permission for a new North Stand but it didn't go ahead as couldn't get a late night licence for it?

The east stand really needs knocking down and starting again I think. If they do manage to polish the turd into something half decent I’ll be amazed!

In my eyes the biggest part of the rebuild and key to the whole viability of it will be what happens to the North. As there is a good amount of room behind we could go very high and deep - one big single ‘Kop’ style safe seating stand with loads of room for bars/hospitality underneath. surely better value to build a proper East Stand where you can achieve higher ticket prices per seat along the side of the pitch and it's further from local housing so easier to get planning permission for non-matchday income streams? If we had a billionaire like Lansdown then the grandiose ideas being touted would make sense. From the interview I can’t see the owner demolishing where he could refurb - which is what I see happening with the East. There’s nothing to refurb at the North end so he’ll have no choice but to knock it down and build from new.

Having a season ticket in the East Stand I can honestly say that it offers an excellent view and I am more than happy with my seat there. Some real negativity about it but suspect most people who have sat up there would agree it is a good view of the game.
It can get damp in there if the wind is blowing into the stand but most of the time OK and I am 4 rows from the front.
Only other comment is I guess is modern stands tend to allow you to go into an area for food toilets etc This is obviously the hospitality area in the East stand.
Actually think knocking it down and build a long deeper version of the South Stand with a cantilever roof and bars and toilets inside is the most economic solution but where would the club shop and hospitality go ? Maybe possible to put it under a new stand.
Fully understand why extending it appeals but has to be quite expensive and difficult to do.

Mem is going to be a logistical/ infrastructural nightmare if we expect to grow to anything near 20 000 capacity. FM seemed such a progressive option from a town planning perspective. But this is Bristol I guess. Who will bid for the Memorial stadium now it as ' community asset ' or ' Place of historical value ' ?. The community wanted to safeguard its existence by pressuring the City council to issue a community order. In a sense the protest group have scored an own goal !. The only option now is to rebuild the stadium to a reduced level which is locally sensitive and realistic within planning. Although I can see the local objecters throwing the kitchen sink now to stop the south stand. Let's hope Labour & Tories stick together and vote this through for the all people of Bristol !.

Application was withdrawn though and we didn't go ahead as we just rolled into the whole stadium development about a year or so later.
