Not arsed about Jonson. Did great while here and of course has banged them in at Posh but why do they want rid of their top scorer? Either they, having seen him day in and out, think he's on the way down, or he won't re-sign with them - and will want more from any prospective new club. Not to mention that he's getting no younger and has had a tricky knee (I think) since he was here. There are other strikers out there, either in the loan market or on the way up as opposed to 30 in the summer, who may be cheaper. Certainly shouldn't be paying over half a million for someone available for nowt in the summer. Peterborough always transfer list players who are in the last year of their contract, they've suggested that they wanted to go for a different approach, or it could be they just want to save money on JCH's wages, as I assume he must already be on a decent wage. If Charlton have now moved on what is JCH waiting for, the summer when he'll be a free agent or another club to make a bid?

Yeah, I just think they must pay roughly what we do if not more, so if he's not agreeing terms with them then he's gonna want big bucks from us. If I were him I'd wait for the summer - every penny a club doesn't spend on a fee is a penny they have to pay wages after all.

P’Boro have a policy of transfer listing anyone who isn’t signing a new contract and reach the last year of their contract. It looked like he was going to complete a deal to join us and P’Boro started to make new signings and were taking a different approach to their attacking style. When our JCH deal fell through he was left a bit high and dry (regardless of who was at fault) as his club had bought in other first choice starters. I’ve not seen anyone put forward any alternative names who could come in and hit the ground running like JCH would likely be able to do. Personally I don’t give a stuff whether the owner is willing to spend £500k on a 30 year old - it’s his money not mine. It’s not as if I make anything out of signing someone with a potential sell on value.

If we bought him I would be very pleased. He’s a top striker who would score goals. My question is more about timing. If the new owners think the playoffs are achievable then he’s more likely to come. If they feel this season is effectively one to consolidate before a push next year then they might see him as a waste of money now and wait to see the bigger market and wider range of options in the summer.

Though you wonder if the ticket prices go up again in August from the already ridiculous £26 to stand and £36 for a seat if we splash cash like that. As for other names, that's not really for us though - none of us would've picked a bloke with an iffy record who Coventry wanted to drive down here to ship out when Coughlan signed him. Though I am a little concerned that MT doesn't have a scouting network at the club - all of those jobs were filled by associates of He Who Must Not Be Named.

It's not even just the 500k fee, it's the £1.17m in wages we agreed over a 3 year contract. That pushes up wage demands from other players too and has the potential to cause problems in the dressing room, we've seen similar before. Buying low and selling high gives you the chance to reinvest in the squad and infrastructure, increasing the overall quality level and gives you a better chance of sustained success (relatively speaking) from season to season. Peterborough are actually decent example of this usually - producing, buying and developing young players, selling the better ones on for vast profits, but still producing exciting teams that are there or thereabouts around the playoffs most seasons, have been in the championship a couple of times, improved their stadium and have a cat 2 academy producing England youth internationals. Brentford are another (extreme) example with their outstanding recruitment that was instigated by their owner Matthew Benham when the club was in League One.

I know he would have been our highest earner if we signed him in the summer, but I’m still not sure we would have been paying him as much as Peterborough are. With Charlton splashing out a million plus for players then surely they were still offering JCH similar or even more than what he’s on now?

Posh normally pay fees for younger players. Posh would not buy him now, so I'm not sure why you are using them as an example. It was a different situation.

Wages are not the only driving factor. He wants to live in Portishead.

I suspect I’m an older vintage than you and istm that Posh are very similar in their approach to things that we were 30 years ago, discovered players then sold them on, we’re always challenging for promotion from this division and sometimes being successful, generally being one of the better division teams. Something went wrong with us in our inability to keep doing what we did. I suspect it’s the old, old question of a lack of a stable football infrastructure. Too much dependency on who’s manager, who’s owning the club. For whatever we think of Darren Mac and Fry they have given that club a very good and stable club over the years with a clear approach to football matters. UTG!

His goals got them to the championship, which was worth around £10m in itself in extra prize money from the EFL so buying him for a million was good business sense and that was their instant return on him.

I’m certain that if we had signed JCH in August we’d be sat in the playoff positions as a minimum and confident of promotion. Even at £850k and £7k pw wages it would have been a good deal financially and football wise. Clearly not as easy to get in the playoffs from where we are now but not impossible if we had the best Number 9 in the division joining us, he’d also still still have a couple of good years left. I fear we’ll at best get a couple of loans - hopefully more Eliot Anderson level and not of Timmy Abraham standard! In the summer we might go looking for up and coming young bargains (getting harder and harder these days) and we could be back to the likes of a Reilly and Daly.

Ultimately value is perception.
On 1 September 2023 there was a feeling that JCH was the final piece of the jigsaw. If we had the muted cash- it made reasonable sense to roll the dice and complete the picture.
Now, we find ourselves; outside the playoff pack, a couple loans down, J Brown- yet to work as planned and a couple players struggling to stay consistenly fit... we need a few pieces... so suddenly, that money (if still avaliable) for JCH needs to fit into several positions. Added- that the playoffs have drifted a little- appetite for risk might be lower.
Surely, Portsmouth should sign him. He's like Colby but can score the odd the rocket from range too.

I think we need to remember Johnson is a top, top player at League One level, he’s a brute, bully and out ‘n’ out goal scorer who can score from nothing.
On another level he is a human being who needs to tie up a good move for his playing career and of course for his financial future of him/his family which I think is demonised by football fans generally. Many call it greed but it’s his future being decided. I hope he gets a good move and I’d still love it to be with us.
One more thing, Johnson played superb for us when we had him, he made a massive difference to us at the time (42 games, 24 goals! and an amazing double at promotion chasing Sunderland before Covid changed so much) and was sold on with a huge financial gain to our club. I’ll always hold him in high esteem 👍🏾
