Without trawling through all comments and pages, surely Chris Martin is on a big weekly wage. Anyone know what it is? With that off the books, surely makes getting JCH a more doable deal….. anyone be able to work that one out. Loved Martins experience and fight and finishing, however would rather JCH at this stage in his career.

strads1983, So you let go the only player in our squad who knows where the net is? At the moment Chris Martin is the only striker worth keeping even if we bring another striker in and it seems unlikely that we will get a striker in on similar form to CM because that will cost £600,000 plus and why shouldnt it when you consider that our record transfer fee of £350,000 was back in 1989!! When the owners said it is possible for Bristol Rovers to reach the Premiership do they realise that to do that we would need to be spending in excess of 2m for players of even Championship quality. The only way of us getting Championship players is to sign players with a poor injury record and look where that has got us. I would suggest that the owners son is totally out of his depth!!

I would just go and buy him as a state of intent. Will help get the fans onside the new ownership who've been poor since taking charge, for the most part. Expensive, maybe. Would go a long way to get fans into the ground, though.

...there are other (and some would say better) options than JCH... If he had no history with us no one would want us to sign him in this window. Yet because of that history, people seem to want us to pay over the odds for a player that is currently signed to a promotion chasing team yet isn't being picked... He is guaranteed goals. How long does Martins actually have left in him, how long can we go with Collins, Marquis and Brown not really contributing. Martins currently the only player that looks like scoring and and he is approaching 36. Our attacking options needs looking at. Our current attacking options keep scoring game after game. Can't stop them - in fact the last team that did stop them was Peterborough back in September. At the other end, Portsmouth have 12 clean sheets this season. Peterborough have 10, Bolton 11, Derby 10, Oxford 8, Barnsley 8... ...that's why those teams are in the top six and we aren't....

Non-League Gems, develop and sell thats the business model, actually thats always been our business model. Gems in general, doesn't matter where from. Need to invest in the scouting and recruitment infrastructure first, because as the manager says "we are playing catch-up". I see absolutely no sign of this investment and improvement forthcoming.

I see absolutely no sign of this investment and improvement forthcoming. Yes if we are to get into the Championship we need to either spend money or have a decent scouting network. As this is Rovers my money is on neither happening and we keep on dreaming.

Developing an identity is great but given that managers change on average every two years thats really impossible to do. Any young player with any potential gets hoovered up by prem teams and the rest of us are left scratching round for late developers or cast offs.

A good scouting network will be great but it’s still a bit of a leap of faith which needs to be balanced with the odd “oven ready” signing now and again - even if it can be expensive at times. A prolific goal scorer is the most sought after commodity in football.

Genuinely think the importance of scouting is underrated. Of course you develop relationships with agents, but sometimes they will have vested interests at play. They won't always be aware of the next gem coming through in non-league either for example. Disagree on the identity point, if the likes of Brentford, Swansea, Brighton, Peterborough and others can develop an identity then so can we. Brentford under the ownership of Matthew Benham put an emphasis on innovation, data and recruitment and focused on sellable assets under the age of 23. Managers came and went, but the philosophy and vision remained the same. It's those "late developers" and "cast offs" or undervalued talent that Brentford probably looked for. "Recruitment is the bread and butter of Brentford because we have one of the lowest revenues in the league. We need to make the business sustainable by buying cheap and selling expensive" said Brentford DoF at the time. “It comes down to not only being able to identify undervalued talent in the market but also we invest a lot in the development of players. We invest in different types of specialists, whether it be sleep coaches, kicking coaches, to try and raise the level of the players who come in." “The key is being able to identify undervalued talent in the market, develop them, and then sell them on for profit, gradually building more value into the squad and gradually increasing the level of the squad”

If you look historically at some of our biggest profit sales it’s a mixed bag as to where they came from;
Nigel Martyn - £1m - St Blazey - NL Gary Penrice - £500k - YTS Devon White - £125k - Grantham - NL Gareth Taylor - £1.2m - YTS Marcus Stewart - £1.2m - YTS Barry Hayles - £2m - Stevenage - NL Jason Roberts - £2m - Wolves - EFL Jamie Cureton - Undisclosed - Norwich - EFL Nathan Ellington - £1.2m - Walton & Hersham - NL Junior Agogo - £200k - Barnet - NL Rickie Lambert - £2m - Rochdale - EFL Will Hoskins - Undisclosed - Watford - EFL Matty Taylor - £250k - Forest Green Rovers - NL Billy Bodin - Undisclosed - Unattached Ellis Harrison - £750k - YTS
These are just those who’ve made us a bit of money, there’s no real tried and tested approach to it. Personally profits should be secondary to results, Richard Walker is in my opinion more important to the history of the club than Rickie Lambert… Yet we had him at his very peak. Ultimately if you’re going to go down the Moneyball route, that means you pick up players all across the spectrum. Your Walters’, Whelan’s and Martins’ are just as important as your Roberts’, Collins’ and Ward’s.

Penrice was picked up from non-league Mangotsfield United, Gareth Taylor from Southampton following his release aged 18 and Ellington £150k fee. But agree with the general premise 👍🏻

Problem is that Brentford, like it or not are a premiership club. I could only say that Peterborough are doing the same at our level.
How much can you develop a player when we end up selling Kyrie Pierre who was 15 to Aston Villa, agents have vested interests and so do the players, after all its a short career being left in the lower leagues.
lets talk about the approach at Charlton, whats their identity at the moment, hows the scouting been undertaken for them?
Chelsea another premiership club, have an extensive scouting network - hows that been working for them?

We can’t even compete with Peterborough. The next stage Rovers should be looking to get to is that block of 10-1 in League One and 24-15 in the Championship. That can be done with short, medium and long term signings, those already at the club and an idea of what you’re going to achieve and how. Currently we seem to be working match day to match day without a real overriding plan. We need to desperately sort that out and give Taylor the platform to develop the team. You also need continuity for when he eventually leaves, how do we play, who do we sign, what do we replace him with. Proper planning prevents p*as poor performance.

My point exactly, anyone think of a club that is building an identity and has succession planning at League 1/2 level? Do we really think that teams like Wrexham have a long term strategic plan, I dont they just get the best players they can, yes they pay up on wages but when they got Mullins it wasn't because he was a great fit for their style. availability of a player will surpass any planning

Like us. In regards to the Kylie Pierre point, the same thing happened to Brentford with them losing the likes of England youth international Ian Carlo Poveda to Man City for peanuts. What did they do? Innovate. Switched to a B team model. inews.co.uk/sport/football/brentford-academy-closed-scouts-126896Charlton have similarly been a basket case for years. Chelsea are one of the most successful English clubs in the 21st century and according to Kieran Maguire, Mason Mount’s departure took Chelsea’s player profit to £765m in the last ten years, which is the highest in the Premier League and by some distance.
