Gary Mabbutt testimonial v Spurs , around 1983. Remember seeing Ardiles strutting his stuff at Eastville , with mates from school , but a lot of the memory of that game has vanished.
Shame , because I can still remember vividly Thatcher getting re elected.
That was my first game too, I think it was agreed as part of the transfer deal and I would have been about 8 years old. I remember being massively disappointed that I didn’t recognise any Spurs players from my panini sticker album, I’m sure I’d have remembered Ardiles. I think Spurs scored six and we may have got a couple of consolation goals. A guy called David Leeworthy scored a hatrick and I kept an eye out for him in the subsequent years thinking he would be a top player - he spent most of his career in the conference!!

Won 4-2 at home to Northampton It was probably around 87/88 . I’d been to a fair few Pompey matches which was where my mum and dad were from and Fratton park was and still obviously is a much better stadium than Twerton but there was something about the Rovers that hooked me that day and I’ve been Gas ever since. I think it was the bond between fans and players , we called the players and cheered them on by their first names or nicknames and there was a closeness that was perfect. I haven’t felt that for a while , probably the last time was DCs promotion winning sides.

Watney Cup final for me too - 05/08/1972 (9 yrs old); I went with my Granddad (C*ty fan) and his best mate who lived next door (had season tickets for both teams). We were in the open end - it was rammed, as was the rest of the ground. I can remember the parachutist landing in the centre circle with the match ball, and the crowd singing Dick Sheppard’s name during the penalties. Was hooked immediately and never looked back . . . Almost exactly this … Went with my Grandad too ! We walked from the top of Lodge Causeway to the ground . After that day there was no chance of anyone else. Absolutely 😁👍

Definatly Ardiles was there , remember everyone around me in absolute awe. Fair play to Burkinshawe for playing him , Steve Archibald may have been there but like I say my memory on that game is very sketchy.

First game with my dad was 4 years old, city v Ipswich in 1977 I believe. Quickly followed by the first of thousands of Rovers games. Hooked from day 1. Not sure date or opposition! First game without my dad. Me and my brother went to the Rovers Leicester City cup (3-1 win!) but somehow ended up in the away end! Most painful “celebration” ever. The Leicester match was my first game as a youngster.

First game at Eastville was 1963 an evening Bristol Boys game.
Went with next door neighbour Mr Weaver and his two sons.
Sat in the old South Stand towards the Muller Road end.
Having only seen football occasionally on TV, obviously in black and white, the biggest impact was the bright green grass under the floodlights.
No idea about the score or the opposition tbh.
Also remember Mr Weaver pointing out later that season that we had a player making his debut - Lindsay Parsons.
Makes me feel my age!
That season remember we did beat the @ity 4-0 and Notts County by the same score.

I can't remember what I did this morning yet alone trying to remember my first game but I do remember going to Ashton Gate to watch them play after the South Stand fire if that puts a timescale on things

I reckon I may have been duped going to watch my first game v Spurs when it may have been a Combination League match - we were both in that league at the time!! My first game proper may have been at home to Cardiff not long after.

1972,can't remember who or when exactly, mates dad took us,parking on the downs, walking down under the flyover, buying a programme then queuing for the south stand, remember the smell of beer and fags, and probably farts. Of course the cup win followed by promotion and winning nearly every week,I thought we were fantastic, little did I know what I was getting into, the great Southampton game followed by years of dross, until gerry etc.

Yeah think you're right that it wasn't Mabs testimonial ,but do remember someone on this forum posting the programme cover a few years back , ( before I joined ).
Would be interesting to see the Spurs line up .

1-1 vs Notts County 16th of March 1991. I was mid teens and my mum wouldn't let me go to a game unless a mate went with me. One did agree to come but let me down last minute so kept that quiet and went on my own anyway. Got the bus from the station and followed the scarfs to find my way. Stood in the Bath end. Don't remember much of the game though think Tony Sealey scored.
Got the wrong bus home and ended up in Staple Hill which was like another city to me at the time. Took me a while to find another bus back into town so home very late to an irate mother. She let me off though.
Went to nearly every home game the season after.

1963 Vs Colchester United. We won 3-1 Stood in the Tote End with my school mate and his dad. I was 11. As soon as I entered the ground...walked down the terracing, that was it, for life. It never leaves you, does it.

Moved across to the North Stand which meant staring into the abyss of nothingness where the once beautifully historic structure had stood. Not long after I moved to the Tote End where I threw myself into a culture of alcohol ,drugs, glue an occasional Bovril whilst bashing the living daylights out of like minded individuals…….A coping mechanism if you like.

I did manage to find a match result and Perryman was among the scorers which suggests a strong team (he was captain in that era) and a different match to the one which I watched

Garth Crooks and Perryman Spurs scorers , Paul Randall amongst ours in a 3-2 defeat.
That side would have included Villa , Hoddle , Ardiles.....
