I finally managed to drag my late father down to Eastville from the North Cotswolds on 23rd March 1974 in our old Austin A55 (so nearly 50 years ago), only to be disappointed when our high flying team were beaten 0-2 by Walsall (goals by Bernie Wright and Alan Buckley, remember them?) Walsall’s version of our ‘Smash and Grab’.
However, afterwards, just to cheer me up we drove not far to a Sports shop, where he purchased my first cherished quartered shirt. Don’t know how he could afforded it…..
When was your first ‘Pirates’ game?

Hull at home 1993/94 season, we were the Saturday team club with my Yate United under 8’s team.
My old man had taken me to Trashton 3 times before this (didn’t ever have or want a shirt thank christ) and felt no connection at all. All my mates at school were Gasheads so was buzzing we had the chance to watch Rovers for the first time. They had us do some training with Alan Walsh/the community staff in the morning and then headed over to Bath for a tour of the ground/meet players in the changing room long before the match etc…Twerton isn’t much but when you’re a young lad and you get to meet Marcus Stewart & he signs all your kit, instantly hooked! My Rovers opportunities were severely limited having a C*ty supporting dad from South Bristol so this was a real treat! Fair play he did take me down the Mem a fair bit when we finally moved back.
All I recall about that first game is that it hammered down on a dismal winters afternoon and Gurney was sent off.

Around about the same time for me, I remember getting on the pitch after the promotion game. I can’t actually remember specific details of my first actual game though. A season or so before I know we watched from a hill behind a rusty corrugated iron fence at the rear of the North Enclosure next to the Stand (the old Jew End) until the Muller road end opened just after half time. Fantastic view standing on a barrier at the back of the open end looking over a sea of heads onto the beautiful green grass of Eastville . I had never seen so many people in all my life, and the noise when we scored was incredible. Season after I was a South Stand regular ,usually the first person in the stadium taking my seat a good hour or so before kick off. This became my Mecca and I didn’t miss a game until the last one in 86.

Watney Cup Finial at Eastville, next door neighbours were Rovers fans and was 7 years old. We were asked to go to the game, older next door neighbours lad was Rovers fanatic and I followed. My old man came from the West Midlands, and supported West Brom watched them once with him when 6 years old and hated it. Very cold, they played with snow on ground against Huddersfield Town in old Division 1 and result 0-0.

My Dad took me to my first game at Eastville even though he wasn't really into football like I was, it was the the FA cup 3rd round replay January 1968 against C**y. We lost 1-2 but it didn't change my mind.

My dear old Granddad (a Govan man and Glasgow Rangers fan) took me (6 years old) and two cousins to Eastville at Christmas 1970. I remember absolutely nothing about the game or the opposition! 😁🏴☠️

Gary Mabbutt testimonial v Spurs , around 1983. Remember seeing Ardiles strutting his stuff at Eastville , with mates from school , but a lot of the memory of that game has vanished.
Shame , because I can still remember vividly Thatcher getting re elected.

Southampton at the Dell in 1978 I think. Saints were promoted and won 3-1. Bobby Gouldcwas playing for Rovers. My Dad was a Saints fan and Rovers were my second team as a kid. They became my team of choice in 1984. First game after that was a 5-1 cup win at Swindle

Watney Cup final for me too - 05/08/1972 (9 yrs old); I went with my Granddad (C*ty fan) and his best mate who lived next door (had season tickets for both teams). We were in the open end - it was rammed, as was the rest of the ground. I can remember the parachutist landing in the centre circle with the match ball, and the crowd singing Dick Sheppard’s name during the penalties. Was hooked immediately and never looked back . . .

This is why it is so important for the players to spend time in the Schools and Community . That 30 seconds to say hello , sign an autograph etc Kid is hooked for life and then we pass it on to our kids.
Sorry to veer off on a wild tangent , but for teams like Rovers it’s how you build / maintain a fan base. Because we ain’t here for the Glory.

Father took me to my first game early 70's at Eastville Rovers v Gillingham. Sat on the front wall in the North Stand Enclosure wondering at the greyhound track around the pitch and the rose bushes behind the goals as well as the huge halftime scoreboard on the ground behind the goal. I think we lost but it was a beautiful sunny day I just remember Stuart Taylor and Larry Lloyd at the back Laurie Taylor in goal. Think we played in a solid blue kit. Hooked thereafter oh and the smell of gassssssss!

As an Exeter City fan (my Bristol and rovers connection came much later) my first rovers game was obviously against Exeter at St James Park, 1980 league cup first round and first of the season. It was a 1-1 draw cant remember who scored for either tbh but I do remember it being on a saturday evening. I also remember lots of rovers in my home town Exmouth it was a hot day! Us Exeter fans always got the train up but we were completely out numbered by rovers. Lots of skinheads (as most of us were) and quite a few punks too (again, as some of us were). No trouble on the train because we kept our mouths shut and our heads down! Think a few fights up in Exeter though as well as the away perimeter fence going down, which happened a few times with big away support

My dad took me to Eastville for a evening game under the floodlights in the mid 60’s, if memories serve me correct ,the opposition was Luton Town & we won. We were stood in the North enclosure, the smell of the mist coming from the gasworks & the crowd singing [Harold,Harold]was enough to get me hooked for life & despite all the problems that have surrounded the club over the years, I don’t regret a minute of supporting it.

To the left I remember seeing people standing on the pre-constructed M32 probably having a very good free view game. Another poster (sorry I can’t see your username), mentions the rose gardens and the greyhound track. I forgot that! Also, I think there was a guy in a large white smock/coat who put up the halftime scores around ground. The Tote End noticeboard, the vast expanse of the open end, the Gas aroma and the funny tower type thing that was the press office? But the most generous thing that happened that day was when we arrived in the car park, we saw a player arrive in the same car park…. My father, who was very sheepish but a little cheeky asked him if he was playing today and he said yes and asked us where we had driven from, my father explained, the player then went back to his car and signed a piece of paper and said give it your son….. the player in question…. A certain Tom Stanton. Never forget that. What memories.

First game with my dad was 4 years old, city v Ipswich in 1977 I believe. Quickly followed by the first of thousands of Rovers games. Hooked from day 1. Not sure date or opposition! First game without my dad. Me and my brother went to the Rovers Leicester City cup (3-1 win!) but somehow ended up in the away end! Most painful “celebration” ever.

Almost exactly this … Went with my Grandad too ! We walked from the top of Lodge Causeway to the ground . After that day there was no chance of anyone else.
