Fair play to him extending the long held tradition of Gas taking weetabix to Shrewsbury. I don’t think they’ll be happy that it’s his legs though.

Stevek is correct, all players start with a clean sheet, it would be strange to do otherwise wouldn’t it? They are getting well paid and to exclude them from selection would be plain dumb. If Wilson shows he’s the best choice in the weekly training we pick him it’s simple and that’s why we have a well paid manager to make those decisions. That doesn’t stop others from having opinions but it does seem that one bad reaction from the player has heavily influenced what people think about him. And that the evidence over a longer period of time (not just one match) seems to support the view that he wasn’t as bad as some think. And of course if fans want to give out criticism which goes OTT then the same fans have to be prepared to take it when it comes back at them. UTG! Dig into the data a little more. 21 games is a hideous appearance rate. Only managed 3 games in a row twice. Goals conceded average 1.43 per game with him in the side. It's as crap as I remember and we need much much better. Why do I need to dig into data more? Surely a new season we start a clean sheet. I get it you don’t think much of Wilson, fair enough. But it would be stupid to exclude him completely when he will be on a sizeable wage.p with a further year to go. I said if he proves to be the best choice in weekly training then he should play. Do you disagree? Seriously. If he isn’t he won’t play. It really is simple. I don’t get the big question about it. We have good competition for CH. MT will presumably be choosing the best combination to play, it may be Wilson, it may not. As for his appearance rate, it may be ‘hideous’ but was that the argument? I thought it was about how poor he was. Is it the appearance rate that’s ’as crap as I remember’ or his performances? It’s not clear. Perhaps in the end because we got him just after he won League 1 with Plymouth the expectations were far higher for him and it didn’t work out as everyone would have wanted. It’s football, it happens. In the end it will be MT who decides so good luck to him. UTG!

Lets be honest if Wilson is still the best in training then either he freezes on match days or MT's made some poor defensive signings this summer. Although there's nothing we can do as fans but hope that somehow Wilson has found some form over the summer.

Topper, stop being silly. This is a forum and different views are allowed. If you read that post I just said it was an alternative view regarding our move to Twerton. I know BCC would have been hard pressed to help financially but history would have been very different and who knows what may have happened with developers or different owners or finding suitable land, which SG ore BCC may have been more helpful over. Just as you picked me up on that point I see you didn’t dismiss my view that owners have used the Mem as a convenient default position to avoid facing the real need for a new ground. And regarding FGR…..what the heck has that to do with Wilson? You said Wilson was ‘poor all season’. He certainly wasn’t at Pompey as I’m sure you saw! Which I thought we were discussing. UTG! Try putting 2 & 2 together, just because Wilson played well in our first game doesn't mean he played well all season, FGR being probably the perfect example of how winning the first game of the season means absolutely nothing. As far as being silly it was you who brought up living in Dorset again, not me. No it doesn’t mean he played well all season. Clearly he didn’t but neither does it mean he was crap all season! And we didn’t win that match it was 1-1, but again what has FGR got to do with it? Blimey, this place can be hard to deliver a non-polarised point of view. It appears that they have to be brilliant or crap when the truth is most players are somewhere in between. 🤔 UTG!

Time to move on, you've got your opinion, I've got mine, let's see if he regularly starts and, if he does, how our defence performs over the first couple of months as we seem to have a run of tough looking fixtures.

True it’s always about opinions. But mine doesn’t matter it’s all about MTs. His is the one that matters. Now we have good competition for the CH positions they will all have to be at their best during the week to get the place on a Saturday. And given the signings we’ve made I’d say he’ll have to go some to be a ‘regular’ starter. Unlikely, but going right back to the start, they should all have a clean start. UTG!

People made the same argument for Rossiter. The man is amazing when he's fit...for 45 mins. It can't wash with this club anymore. Look across Wilson's whole career and he's averaged 24 games per season. Hes only managed 4 full seasons out of 15. The stats I presented represent most of the seasons where he's played under 25 games. What makes you think that, at 34/35 a player who has been consistently below par, out injured and unable to build a rhythm into a season is suddenly going to have a worldie with us? Its got nothing to do of what I think of him, its about what he's giving to the shirt for the money we pay him and we are getting terrible value for our £4K per week. When he does play, our concede rate increases. We should never have signed him.

No argument from me over lots of that. But I have responded (so many ties!);about him ever playing well for us, I saw him play an excellent match at Pompey. And, as you say, he’s being well paid so he starts a new season with a clean slate. You disagree. You are allowed to but best not to post in such a way that assumes others haven’t considered what you have.

Pardon the tone if it reads that way Wareham, there is no intention for me to do so, you're a good poster and I love it when we get into a bit of a debate. I just get a bit bored with the "hes great when hes fit" comments and "he played amazing against so and so" as a reason for keeping players like Wilson, Hunt, Rossiter et al. Not that you neccessarily have said that. As a perrenial L1 club we need to be signing players that (a) can play and have a track record of playing at least 30 league games a season (Ian Atkins stance was he wouldnt offer contracts to player who havent and we were pretty much injury free for his tenure and beyond) (b) a performance matrix that proves they are as good or better than whats currently in the squad (c) has potential sell on. Of course not every player you sign will fullfill that as the law of averages will say you'll get an injury, some wont live up to expectations and some players will plateau at a certain level. But if we arent signing players who like Wilson, have a track record of constant underperformance, starting with how many games their body can actually take, who are seen as first team first picks, then we will cut any one of the above out by 75% before we have even kicked a ball on any new season. It may be we want to take a chance on a pro whos been injured who when fit can be above the level, a bit like DC did with Bodin, and thats fine, but dont sign 4 or 5 of them on decent wages which packs out the budget and dont see them as a major part of the plans. See them as your bonus players when they are fit and can add a contribution and leave a bit of headroom in case we need another loan midseason if they are broke beyond fix. There is no doubt that having a squad of aged crocks last year cost us valuable points across the season and as Rossiters lack of signing is proving, we have possibly dodged a bullet with him.

Clearly players need to be fit and you’re correct, doesn’t matter how good they are if they’re not playing…. But I have sympathy for them, their injuries are not of choice and if we sign players with a record of injuries then it’s the fault of the club. Contracts should always be honoured. I know you’re not saying they shouldn’t be, but I got the impression that you feel that Wilson should be ‘moved on.’ I guess that will depend upon the likelihood of someone meeting what he’s currently on. And of course if your record of injuries aren’t great then if you add age to that it’s not likely to improve. I saw him play well at Pompey but I’m well aware of what followed. Best not to get into another comparison with the last few years, it will only degenerate into another argument about the previous manager, but I like the way the club has gone about recruitment this summer, no fancy announcements but decent players (to be confirmed!)and I’d say the club and manager are well aware of how some players haven’t been value for money. Perhaps the offer to Rossiter (I don’t know what it was but I presume it reflected his playing time) was an early sign of the change. I’d say the recruitment this summer has been pretty similar to Ian Atkins and very different to what we’ve seen over the past few years. He was a much maligned manager imo. Could always pick a very decent player and the 2007 promotion team was very much his team because he’d recruited most of them before Trolls managed them. And of course when he left us he became Everton’s Chief Scout/ Head of Recruitment I think. His biggest problem was his ability to start an argument in an empty room. But it looks like GF/MT/CS a have tried to do something similar to what you’ve said. Of course we’ll only know when the season starts but I look at the recruitment and think we are stronger than when we started last year. ATM! UTG!

Good luck to Rovers reserve team in 2024/25. Shrewsbury Town.
We hope that JR, JM and LH do well.
For BRFC the league starting appearances in the 2023/24 season for the three players recently signed by Shrewsbury Town were:
JR * Started 04 league matches
JM * Started 13 league matches
LH * Started 14 league matches
All three players, at their best, can be a genuine asset.
Their replacements are:
IH, PO and JS.
All three started most games for WFC, FTFC and MFC in 2023/24.
Appears to be shrewd dealing. We shall see at the end of the current season.

Not sure what point you're trying to make re appearances as neither PH or JM had major injury issues last season, just that neither really seemed capable of performing consistently to warrant being selected.

Awful business from Shrews imo.
Hoole may come good but if they are pinning their hopes on Rossiter and Marquis they are in for a tough season.

They must be hoping between him and Rossiter they will get a whole season out of the pair of them...combined!
Though 4 appearances for JR and 5 for JN last season makes me think that's a very tall order.
If I was a gambling man, I'd be betting on them to get relegated.

Obvs they are skint and trying to scratch together a side to compete on the cheap. What’s more awful is that a few of those signings are our rejects….. that some thought were decent 🙄

Awful business from Shrews imo. Hoole may come good but if they are pinning their hopes on Rossiter and Marquis they are in for a tough season. Strangely I do read the Shrewsbury forum. It’s a really easy read, well organised sections and probably less busy than here. It’s accessible and like this place quite easy to navigate around. They have been a club over the past few years who’ve been similar to us in many ways and going back further I’ve always thought them, Walsall, AFCB and us were all of a muchness. ( A long time ago obviously!) It’s good to get another clubs perspective on League 1. And they are very happy that JR has signed for them, apparently had a good match v Derby this week and they think he will do well. Some are aware of his injuries but at this stage are glossing over them because obviously, like us, can’t do much about them. I’d say they’ve got their fingers crossed! They are fairly happy with JM as well, thinking he’ll score goals although he hasn’t earned his own thread, yet. UTG!
