This isn’t an upgrade for Wardy. All for bringing in an older keeper to give him some extra help but not seeing the point in potentially watering a keeper off by bringing in one who doesn’t seem to be any upgrade. We could get an older keeper or a younger keeper. The Gaschat fact is always that it is a replacement for Jed. What if its competition for Jed, what if having someone close to his age will spur him on to do even greater things? As I posted earlier in the thread why would Griffiths leave WBA in the Championships just to do a similar job at an L1 side? I've no idea how loans work but I assume most clubs must insert a clause that their players play a certain % of games. I can now see JW going out on loan until at least January to get some game time, assuming a deal to sell him this summer isn't already on the cards.

BUDGET - I know it's not a popular topic, but perhaps if this happens, whilst not ideal, it ticks many boxes. Quality keeper, who has played 4 or 5 times more 1st team games than JW inc at Championship level, for very low cost, giving competition and the chance for JW development during training, leaving more funds available for those forward players we definitely need. Anyone any idea how much we normally pay towards the wages of loan players from big clubs ? What loan players cost v permanent signings seems to be one of football's mysteries. I've never seen one article published comparing the costs.

Welcome Josh but hope Jed gets to fight it out for the No.1 jersey.

Welcome Josh but hope Jed gets to fight it out for the No.1 jersey. Pretty much my view, rather Jed got the nod but he has to earn it and justify keeping it.

He's only 22 now, so you would have expected him to improve during the last 3 years. He was West Broms cup keeper last season and started both FA cup games and started 10 games in the championship the season before that. So he's deemed good enough to play as cover when needed as that level. View AttachmentWho ever signs, I think they should both start equal in pre season anyway. They can look at them in training and during games and then decide who is number 1. I think we need two keepers that can challenge to push each other on.

Surely a reserve goalie at a top Championship club is always going to beat a reserve goalie at a L1 side, you can't imagine if a top Championship club signed JW this summer he'd start this season as their new No 2.

Not necessarily, sometimes the 2nd keeper isn't that good they only play in emergencies. If the number 1 keeper gets injured, they bring in an emergency loan. I was hoping we would go for someone like Callum Burton. Then him and Ward could have pushed each other and we would be improving our own keepers.

I work with a Baggies supporter and he's very surprised we've managed to loan Griffiths as he's raving about his ability and the fact they'll now have to go and sign a replacement back up keeper.
Jed is already good enough and one of our own though, so it will be interesting watching this play out. UTG

If the No 2 has league experience you can't bring in an Emergency Keeper hence why Hall never plays for us.

Genuinely think some people would prefer us to get Belshaw back

Genuinely think some people would prefer us to get Belshaw back It's amazing the reaction to this we need another goalkeeper as Jed is not L1 ready. I have read quotes of well we are not going to be challenging this season so why not let him play and gain experience which made me laugh defeated before the season started. Noone knows how this season will play out what other players we sign and how other clubs get on. Yes some clubs have spent big but that guarantees you nothing and we have as much a chance as any other. I just hope our fans don't turn on the new keeper if he makes a mistake as we have plenty of recent history of doing that.

Some keepers might prefer to start in League 1, than be a number 2 in the championship though. Personally I would rather play, than sit on the bench.

Seems a very good keeper, with experience at a young age. Hopefully Josh and Jed can push each other and strengthen us.

The way our so-called fans treated the young Brentford loanees was shameful. JW is a very promising keeper but I feel is not quite ready to be our automatic no.1. If this new guy is as good as he is said to be, then we have a very good signing. We have him for a year so for that time let's encourage him and treat him well. For this season he is ours so lets embrace that and be thankful he has chosen the Gas! Whether JW is with us or loaned out I am sure he will be no 1 when he is ready.
