Not a classic but expected with virtually a new team playing at home for the first time. Was impressed with all the new signings, hutch was not great but probably reflective of a new team getting to know one another.
Stand outs for me were Bilongo and Moore. Also Senior and Forbes when they came on.
Promise grew into the game, some of his hold up play helped , a goal will get his season going.
My only gripes were Thomas needs to be further forward and Griffiths needs to drop the laid back approach to distribution!

I went with my son. Not a great game. You sense that most games involving Northampton won’t be. I thought that the back three did well, Mola perhaps the pick. He looks a good find. Bilongo and Omochere were hit and miss, but put in displays full of heart, which was good to see. Bilongo seems the type of player who will frustrate at times but also has that bit of magic. Omochere I thought did a decent job in a role he’s not used to, but the fact he has the number 9 shirt perhaps suggests that he is seen as a central forward for us. He has a bit of pace and presence about him.
Thomas’ set piece delivery was pretty good, which is pleasing as he has spent most of his time at the Gas being the decoy for Evans in that department. The midfield couldn’t gain control in the first half and a lot of that was to do with Ward not looking fit, which is a concern. I thought Conteh had a decent game. Hutchinson showed glimpses but couldn’t really affect the game. He needs time though, and I’m sure will come good.
Subs made a difference and we showed good fitness to finish by far the stronger team. Moore’s tackle at the end was vital and rightly celebrated. I love it when defenders do that! It was brilliant to see Bilongo’s celebrations at the end. So few footballers make it in the pro game and he clearly experienced a great moment of validation from that, on his first league start. It will give him confidence which will hopefully allow him to settle in quickly.
The win was deserved but only marginally. With so many new players, it was important and gives them breathing space and a platform to build from. The atmosphere after the goal was amazing and I love being able to share that with my 11 year old. Having not seen too many matches over the last few years, we’re lucky to be going to Cardiff and Rotherham, too. Two difficult games but hoping for two more, fully committed performances and with that, you always have a chance of success. UTG!

Just got back..
Where else would you get to see nice sunny eve, with a crescent moon, aeroplanes coming in to land at Bristol airport, balloons rising and in chorus for the same direction, and a Gas win clean sheet and a debutant scorer?
So we start at at an unusually bouncy mem. A brilliant idea to unroll the flag ...but can we please have it going around 3/4 of the ground?!
First 30 mins we played like complete strangers. Last 15 marginally better...we actually tried shooting on sight, Promise decent effort, one more from Grant (I think) both outside box. Improving. But we were still behind the possession stats at 43% at one point. Within the first half Northampton created a few chances, one notable was a counter attack where their no5 was hauled to the ground before he got into our box, then their attack continued, fizzled out, no consequence to bear for us - the referee had an indifferent game for me. (At the time, I agreed with Northampton on the corner that should never have been given - to me it looked like a goal kick but can't 100% be sure).
Second half we played more like a cohesive team. As in the first half, it was refreshing to see a left sided flank player trying to go past his opponent on the outside (!?), the old fashioned way by creating space and pace : this led to no end of trouble for Northampton, but for me the final pass cross shot left a lot to be desired.
Much has already been said about mid and attack players, some of which are makeshift on position and won't play every match in those positions, so I won't dwell too much.
Scotty captain is a graceful move, one which I support as to me he's already a Gas legend. Up front all out striker, I'm not so sure.
Promise, I really liked his contribution, it was a physical contest - like Northampton matches usually are, and his rawness was exposed at times. Plenty to work with there. I like his work effort and engine.
Mid I will give a swing by because Conteh and Grant put in a shift, and for me Hutch was inconsistent but showed sparks of what he can do but too many times gave away possession too easily.
I thought the Keeper was lackluster to come out to claim a few desperate crosses, but over all had a good game of stopping shots and ball keeping.
But then we move on to best i m o: Quite impressed with defence in Mola, he done all the tidying up and breaking down with no fuss....Wilson, steady.....but up there with the eventual m o m, Taylor Moore. TM was my m o m until the 90+ as his right sided defending and general "unit" was masterful - even culminating in a last ditch sliding tackle after we had scored which was expertly timed preventing opponent going through on goal - he fist pumped himself for such a sublime intervention - we desperately needed that last season. The defence gets my m o m as they performed heroics with blocking shots and crosses. We seem to have upgraded our defence from last season! This is the foundation of a successful campaign, and everyone's m o m Bilongo scoring the winning goal on debut appitamises the effort and passion we've not seen for a while on and off pitch to get the Mem rocking like we remembered.
After the Barton embers have finally been extinguished by some of his Scouse players departing, and the twilight of CEO and his nepotistic favourite departing, we turn our heads to a different era, a new way of playing and conducting yourself on the pitch....an MT era.... could he possibly be the one that helps unite the fanbase and disconnect between club and humble supporter?
Only time will tell..

We were very disjointed as to be expected but we have quality in our side. A superb corner from Thomas and brilliant movement by Bilongo was ultimately the difference.
There is flexibility in the side which allowed us to keep our shape with the substitutions. The first two were like for like but added legs and stability with McCormack and Lindsey. The last two meant Bilongo and Thomas could get further forward. We seemed better balanced with Senior and Forbes on. Forbes pushed us further forward on the left, Mola looked good at LWB and Senior pushed us further forward on the right. This allowed Thomas to be more dangerous playing in a more natural area and Northampton started sitting deeper.
I know Bilongo playing upfront was a stop gap due to no natural replacement for Omochere but the substitutions and players changing positions made us stronger. MT has to take credit for signing versatile players and positive substitutions even though the last two looked negative at the time.

Loved it in the South Stand when 7 mins extra time was announced and we turned to the poor Northampton fans Tbh, if it weren't for the gamesmanship and time wasting at 0-0, 7 mins wouldn't have been added..

Most of the comments are fair but in all honesty such comments as "but i can see he is rubbish" are cheap and totally unfair. To those who think they can judge a player on one game dont kid yourself especially against a team like Northampton where a midfielder is going to spend most of the game watching the ball fly from end to end.I thought the keeper was a very calming influence and airs confidence and ability apart from one lucky moment early on. We won more in the air than i have seen in years from a Rovers side and seem to have unearthed some gems in defence and what i found impressive was the substitutes in defence seem to have a lot of ability too.
With a completely new team, two players missing and a likely additional striker as well I will hold back from any criticism of individuals which is unfair after one game where we have won and kept a clean sheet.
I think the fixture list has been a bit unfair on us but you have to play every team twice over the season so you have to play the tough teams sometime and as has been said this is a very strong division this year where even the teams coming up are strong and not likely to be in the bottom four.
Great atmosphere as well but would be brilliant if we can hit capacity sooner rather than later as the Mem can certainly rock.

Good all round performance from the team, always going to be a little disjointed with so many new faces in the starting lineup, playing Northampton is an akin to playing Wycombe, physical but effective. Our defensive display was a vast improvement on last season’s showing’s, IMO Wilson had his best game in a Rovers shirt & Taylor Moore beside him was outstanding, that last ditch tackle was something else. Out of the other new arrivals, Mola & obviously Bilongo caught the eye, Hutchinson struggled to impose his game but showed glimpses of what he capable of. The arrival’s of fresh legs with the late substitutions swung the game in our favour & great to see the scenes of a late winner at the Mem.

My only moan after watching the highlights back just now. Why didn’t we sell the southstand block behind the goal before the others. Looked so empty when to the west was pretty full!

First impressions. 2 teams that will be fighting against being in the bottom four unless things improve dramatically for either team over the next month.

Anyone see Evans scored for Huddersfield Huddersfield fans are waxing lyrical about him. They Can't believe they got him for 500k. We really did get our pants pulled down. Totally agree, £500k for Anthony Evans was ridiculous. Unfortunately the Ward Hutchinson combo did not work yesterday, looking forward to going over the bridge on Tuesday to see a few more new faces having a run out. Wilson was outstanding. Every cloud.

We struggled to gel for the first 30 mins, players were not finding their team mates with their passes and we panicked and played to many long balls to the front two that went astray. Once we got the ball down on the ground and our passing improved we edged the remainder of the game and just about deserved the winner. i was impressed with Taylor Moore, Thomas and Bilongo, Omochere also showed some good touches. The new players are young and will take time to adjust and show their real quality , but there was enough quality there yesterday to suggest they will have a good future with us. When we put Bilongo upfront his stature reminded me of a defender that we converted into a striker , Gareth Taylor who's goals alongside Stewart's took us to Wembley. Perhaps Bilongo maybe be the answer to the additional striker I think we still need ?

But to get more money we would have probably had to sold him to a Championship club and i don't suppose any came in for him. At least his replacement cost half the amount we got for Evans. Hutchinson did show a few bits of quality yesterday, he is a young player and will take time to adjust to playing at a higher level.

By the way how good was James Wilson yesterday, the lad has to ignore all the noise that he gets aimed at him and works hard to improve. Yesterday he showed the hard work is paying dividends and we could be the benefactors. Really impressive performance from James.

Clinton Mola, really excited by this guy. Won everything in the air and looked to move the ball forward when he had the chance. Can't believe Reading let him go?
Blank slate for Wilson, he was different class. Such an exciting back 3 with Taylor and Forbes making up 5 to chose from.
What a breath of fresh air Promise is, such a different kind of threat to what we've had in recent years, will only get better as he gets fitter.
Couldnt fault the effort of any of those players on the pitch and the gasheads responded. Going to be a tough season but we've got a group we can get behind every week.

Thought him Mola and Taylor Moore looked as solid as a rock, with the exception of the error by Moore in the second half. However his tackle near the end was absolutely brilliant. That tackle was as good as a goal. A bit concerning that they had that much space when they had to attack after going 1 down Sorry nicked this from the Gas Guzzlers forum but thought it was good. To the tune of the Baddiel and Skinner song- And that tackle from Moore And when Bilongo scored And the Mem was bouncing..... One Pirate on the shirt Watney Cup still gleaming 13 years of hurt (since an opening day home win?) Never stop me dreaming (of Irene)
