I'm glad I didn't hear this on Saturday.
Maybe people in that part of the ground need to out-sing the idiots with "Oh when the gas.." whenever they try it.

I wouldn’t necessarily call it racist however it’s very ignorant. I’m disappointed our fanbase can’t make a decent song for a bloke with one of most unique names in the EFL! The club statement doesn't call it racist. But it does suggest some of the songs being sung have "racial undertones" and "outdated stereotypes" and I think that the Promise song certainly meets that criteria. Hopefully we can find an alternative that gets the whole crowd going and lifts (rather than potentially embarrasses/offends) our players... it can't be that difficult, surely?

Listen to Linford not the old white guy on this one. In case you think "its all harmless". Pathetic that people even have to be told in 2024 Thanks for sharing Percy. Worth watching by all.

Maybe this will work. Oh-mo-cher-ree, Oh-mo-cher-ree Oh-mo-cher-ree, Number Nine. (Somebody more creative than me can write some more lyrics.) TAKEN FROM Oh my darling, oh my darling Oh my darling, Clementine Thou art lost and gone forever Dreadful sorry, Clementine Oi, that was my suggestion on here a couple of days ago, but yeah, I think it works. Probably don't need another verse just repeating the lyrics will sound good

Good to see the club addressing it, no doubt all the Facebook dads will be kicking off and chucking the word 'woke' around. Nothing ‘woke’ about it , like others have said , it’s extremely embarrassing. I heard it on Saturday being shouted out by some right bellends , unfortunately one of the lads was stood right behind me so I could hear every word , I turned around and just gave him a look that you would give your toddler if they were playing up but he didn’t seem to give a sh**. Those in the main singers group on the thatchers end aren’t bothered with punching anyone on the terrace - they love continually tapping someone on the shoulders throughout the game just for annoyance pretending it wasn’t them and happy to get violent if challenged. And also happy to push innocent people in the back to start a surge forward. Sorry but in my mind singling out by cctv and removal by the stewards or police is the only way you are going to manage this situation and you know this isn’t going to happen. I remember the police on the tote end to keep fans apart etcetera but having this presence around the singing group now isn’t going to happen here. As a side I wonder if the Shithead chant is part of this issue

I just spat my drink out I wasn’t expecting that. How do you know that some of these fans haven’t seen his member and are speaking from experience? I honestly don’t know what to say that is one of the most random songs I’ve ever heard. WHY?!?!

Change the lyrics in the current one to something like..
He joined the gas from Fleetwood Town, Promise Promise, He only cost 500 hundred grand, Promise Promise, He knocks defenders to the floor, Give him the ball and he will score, Omochere rovers number 9 Na na na na na etc.

An alternative might be to sing a rebuttal chant as soon as it seems the gashead choir are attempting either the Promise chant or the IRA song. My darling clementine seems to be getting some traction so something like:
Please don’t sing that, Just don’t sing it Please don’t sing that bloody song It’s not smart and it’s not clever It’s not Gas and it is wrong.

One guy posted up about this "woke nonsense" and quickly too his tweet down when I and a few others confronted him on it.

Could it be that the assumption it has racial undertones perpetuates the stereotype? I’ve heard the lads try it with Marquis. It didn’t catch on as he didn’t score much eh! When Martin was on his streak would it have worked if he had the 9 shirt? Generally number 9’s are your stocky blokes.
Difficult one, it’s got the factions arguing with each other anyway. I will say there’s a patronising element to the “educating” line from the statement. It’s commonly used by people to sound superior to “the great unwashed”, most organisations PR and social media accounts follow the same line.
Much like the giggling schoolboy being told something isn’t funny by a teacher, which only makes him giggle more.

What??? “he shagged a bird and now she's dead he swings his cock around his head” is not acceptable to sing about ANY footballer whatever ethnicity. However, just imagine us singing that to Agogo the week before he had those accusations flung at him, you can see the police now suggesting that “even your own fans sing that you did it”. shall we critique it as a football song… line one - Not about football. line two - Not about football apart from the fact someone has arbitrarily inserted the word football before sock remaining lines - Not about football until remarkably the last line is about football and is rovers related. To be honest I thought all gasheads would have too much self respect to repeat this bilge and I cannot believe anyone would rise to it’s defence.

I'm anti woke and will always push back against it but I will say that promise chant the ultras/yobs have been singing is rediculous!
The lad will be cringing every time he hears it sung.
Much better chants have been suggested in this thread for our new no 9👍

Much better chants have been suggested in this thread for our new no 9👍 It's just a terrible song and that's before you even get into the history and background of it. Unfortunately its been around for years. The other week I saw an online debate amongst Blackburn fans using the same song for one of their players, with the majority against it. As everyone else has suggested, a new catchy song is needed to replace this. Certainly wont be hard to come up with something better!

That's the bit of the song that offends me and I imagine offends Promise. Who would want a song about killing women? It's misogynistic. We have brought the Gas Girls (I think the use of the term 'Girls' is undermining and we should change it) back to play at The Mem and we are hoping to bring in more female fans and families. This will just make people turn around and leave.

I think singing about someone's cock and killing women is offensive and unhumerous.
I've caused offence before, it happens. But importantly when I've learnt that I've offended someone- I apologise and stop whatever action was causing the offence. Why would you want to offend anyone?
Any effort to continue singing this song is spiteful and thick.
