Could it be that the assumption it has racial undertones perpetuates the stereotype? I’ve heard the lads try it with Marquis. It didn’t catch on as he didn’t score much eh! When Martin was on his streak would it have worked if he had the 9 shirt? Generally number 9’s are your stocky blokes. Difficult one, it’s got the factions arguing with each other anyway. I will say there’s a patronising element to the “educating” line from the statement. It’s commonly used by people to sound superior to “the great unwashed”, most organisations PR and social media accounts follow the same line. Much like the giggling schoolboy being told something isn’t funny by a teacher, which only makes him giggle more. It's not too difficult to 'sound superior' in relation to those who think it's 'funny' and what is everyone moaning about, or it's 'woke' for the club to highlight it, as if you fall under either of those categories, you are indeed a thick ****.

I agree with 95% of this quote, as I’m sure the majority of kind, considerate, community spirited ones amongst us.. I would change it slightly. “It's not too difficult to 'sound superior' in relation to those who think it's 'funny' and what is everyone moaning about, or it's 'woke' for the club to highlight it, as if you fall under either of those categories, you need to meet a few more not like you and the people you mix with. I would add, If only we could all suspend our judgement and appreciate how difficult it is to walk the streets where you know you will be looked at and judged by some. I, for one, am delighted the club have made this statement. I’m sure, in our thousands we will stand tall and show the very best of our city and our club in the next home game. Let’s roll out the love and together we can show the best of ourselves and our club. If this moment has made some stop, consider and think about their behaviour and it leads to a new thought process and change in actions, we will be delighted. The best of us are amongst us.

I'm anti woke and will always push back against it but I will say that promise chant the ultras/yobs have been singing is rediculous! The lad will be cringing every time he hears it sung. Much better chants have been suggested in this thread for our new no 9👍 Wokeadjective: woke; comparative adjective: woker; superlative adjective: wokest
alert to and concerned about social injustice and discrimination. "he's an activist and very woke" So.. you're pro- social injustice and discrimination???

alert to and concerned about social injustice and discrimination. "he's an activist and very woke" So.. you're pro- social injustice and discrimination??? Good point. The term "woke" originally emerged from African-American Vernacular English to describe a heightened awareness of social injustices, particularly racism. However, it has since evolved to encompass broader issues of equality, diversity, and inclusion. Being "anti-woke" typically means rejecting or criticizing the ideas and practices associated with this social awareness, such as discussions about systemic racism, gender identity, or inclusive language. Woke implies a commitment to social justice and empathy, especially for marginalised groups. For me woke emphasises social awareness and empathy, particularly regarding inequality and discrimination. On that basis I’m with gasify happy to be woke. Who wouldn’t be? Good to have this debate if it helps us all to become more aware of the impact of our words. Can we be kind?

Whatever the dictionary definition is, the word means something else in society. A different word would be good but it’s what we have for now. I see it as an attitude steeped in classism and self congratulation, a new religion that focuses on the self and how you can be a “better” person over others. Punishing people without forgiveness.
Personally I prefer the old time religious tenets that steer people away from virtuous narcissism. “Judge lest ye be judged”, “hate the sin not the sinner” and “forgive them lord for they know not what they do”. Be a good person yourself as an example to others not to demonise.
Anyway I don’t really want to get into distracting philosophical debates!
It would be good if an alternative song can be found but I’m aware the terrace is a place for edgy humour, sometimes it crosses a line and that’s a reality of the grey areas in life.
We’re talking about it and that’s how things change, not by castigating those that do it. The best way would be to sing alternative lyrics to the tune so when it kicks in you’ll sing your own version. Eventually it’ll seep in, telling people not to do something will only make them do it more.

I love how the rich people that have taken the whole country for a ride for years, making literal billions for their rich friends, get to distract the masses with words like "woke" to get them mad at people poorer than themselves whilst they rinse you dry. And you think those fighting for a fairer society are being classist. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled, etc etc

Whatever the dictionary definition is, the word means something else in society. A different word would be good but it’s what we have for now. You mean has the word has been hijacked and redefined by certain elements of society to cover anything that they don't like... especially if it means PANDERING to minorities. Another case of "political correctness gone maaaad" These days they will throw you in JAIL just for saying you're ENGLISH..

I remember the old days when only men were admitted to the clergy and some molested children. Maybe that's why they told people not to judge?

Back to the subject......
The Irish Rover seems the obvious song, but it's way too long and complicated. Just using the end of the chorus gives ......
He cost 500 grand Now he scores across the land Omochere the Irish Rover
Or if we need an obligeratary swear word
He's been effing class Since he signed for the Gas Omochere the Irish Rover

Imagine how his family would feel, sitting in the stands and hearing THAT song! How the family feel. Yes. Yes. And three times Yes. Just stop and Imagine. The ones singing those words must by now be thinking themselves and will understand the impact of words on individual human beings. I expect not to hear that song again. This situation is just so upsetting to the majority of our fans. Good that so many on here are standing alongside Promise and showing the best of our club. Sending much ❤️ to Promise. Be kind everyone.
