Long journey for a 0-0 but boy did we put in a shift. The back 3, Taylor when he came on & the keeper were all superb. A constant barage of long balls into the box was a real test which we passed with flying colours. A shame we couldn't keep the ball better after a bright start but the whole 16 can't be faulted for effort. I'd have certainly taken 4 points from the first 2 games, especially with the added bonus of 2 clean sheets. Lots of positives defensively again, now to sort the front half of the team !!

Can’t believe some of the low match scores and some of the criticism after what is a pretty good away point at one the strongest sides and most difficult places to go on the division! Rotherham just shaded possession but had 20 shots to our 5 but made exactly the same amount of passes as we did (317)….which tells you everything about how they play. We’ve just played two teams that have basically bombarded us with long balls and direct play and we think it’s a problem with our own players that we haven’t managed to be that creative? It just shows a lack of appreciation of the work our central players had to do today without ever really having the opportunity to get on the ball and stroke passes around. Winning duels, scrapping for knock downs, being first to second balls, intercepting things and securing possession and fighting and holding off players to prevent them getting in front of their men to get clear opportunities at goal. These two games should please people immensely. It’s shown that players we’ve signed - including what we thought were creative players - are also willing to work and defend and do a job for the team as opposed to working as individuals in order to ‘catch the eye’. Surprised how under appreciated that’s been by some. We don’t just defend with the back 3 and the goalkeeper. We defended with all 11 players and first half in particular looked very in control of that barring one or two moments. Yes second half they pinned us in and bombarded us with set pieces and balls into the box but we battened down and came through it. Couple of players today that I thought would wilt and not be up to having to do their jobs defensively, who I thought were excellent in that respect. Excellent post. I see your a newbie. You'll soon drop down to our level of old gits moaning!

Griffiths and the back three deserve all the plaudits they are rightly getting but I’d like to single out two players who showed more to their game today. Bilongo, after getting roasted in his sub appearance at Cardiff, had a very decent, disciplined game, and Hutchinson, who seems in danger of being the next forum scapegoat, got stuck in a lot more than against Northampton and produced a couple of really good moments that promise what I’m sure will be better to come from him. The ball to Ward was excellent for instance, in the build up to McCormick’s miss - such a shame that couldn’t have fallen to Martin. And he had two or three efforts in the first half which show that a big part of his game is about arriving at the edge of the box at the right time. I’m pretty sure he will do well for us.

Exactly the two I had in mind. 👏
Bilongos out of possession work and overall game was better than v Northampton but that was influenced by a late goal….
Hutchinsons defensive work has surprised me, particularly today and as you say the work leading to McCormicks chance was excellent and what I’d like to see more of, but has been completely overlooked by how impressed people were by Ward sliding to keep it in play.
Today was a great point and most of us expected us to get beat and most who visit Rotherham this season will be!!

Come on everyone, you're watching Premier League nonsense on MOTD with a few beers in you, and thinking the Gas could beat this bunch of bollocks.

Just got back ..
To me... What a great day out for a first away match!? Easy journey, nice day, lovely company, great seeing some usual suspects, great Gas voice and a hardy performance that earned us a point - 4 points in 2 games is promotion material!
I do admire from a distance what Rotherham have achieved in the rebuilding of their stadium and staffing it, filling it etc....i fondly remember Millmoor a good old fashioned stadium, old school - but this is modern, easy to navigate, big enough to host a sizable away following with plenty of facilities including parking, and they can generate some noise. Ok, it looks like my Mechano set someone bought me for Xmas in 1980 in places, and there's rust on the tennis bat floodlights....but hey, they have their own steaming media, replay of real events in real time (when it suits them) on a big screen.
Anyhoos, onto some less important things: I thought the 3-4 man defence unit stoic in performance was breached a few times, but the hero of the day, Griffith played as good a goalkeeping game in a Gas shirt, as I think I've ever seen!? Sir, take a bow. Inspirational reaction shot stopping saves. Tbh, he looked cool in warm up (!), and our last bastion in desperate defending easily m o m.
Again, the defence unit looks to have more cohesion and organisation this season. Only 2 league matches in, granted, but the shape and balance you can see what it is set up to do..
We started a pressing game and for the first 20 minutes or so, I thought we passed well, put pressure on, moved well off the ball and defence operated higher up pitch - all without having that sharp point in attack......but very soon after that, perhaps after a Rotherham tweak, they slowly grew into the game. And,on one particular counter attack: hit post, forced us back to defend deeper, and pretty much took charge of the most of the game thereafter...
Mola, Wilson, Taylor Moore, Bilongo had their work cut out...but in first half (in front of us) many firsts to headers clearing and blocking of crosses was a delight to see.
We countered nice move in first half to produce a tame shot at Keep as only real offering until break, but sorry to go back to it, at times it felt like desperate defending and all hands on deck..
Second half after introducing 2 striking subs for 2 strikers, it felt like for like....but in the middle of that we missed the best chance of the whole game out of either side....we really should have scored with LMc deciding to send his love letter way over the bar into the Gas faithful instead of the easier half open net. Such a shame. It would have been something of daylight robbery looting raid - which I hear they like these days around this part of the world and my how would have doth protested. Again.
I thought LT was ran a bit ragged today, and a bit sniffed out of the match. Nice to see CM come on. Mixed it up physically. Promise still looking promising, especially with the delicious dummy setting up LMc opportunity (that was his last action before subbed). Leyton Orient attack fella inert, but managed to get himself booked for kicking out at fella for no apparent reason apart from frustration. Not sure on Hutch. Tough match for him. Scotty came on and had immediate impact with a brilliant breaking run on left that almost made way into the box...... and ended up back at the keeper!(?) Nice cameo though. Grant Ward played the fab ball in for LMc opportunity and done well keeping the ball in for the counter attack....but in all honesty had a rough day in mid. Ref gave most 50/50 challenges to them, a lot I honestly couldn't see as fouls, just their fella whom was physically bigger fella down first and got the free kick......
......but this is a Steve Evans team, what do you expect? His post match passive aggressive comments made me Chuckle, brother....."battered"......?.....he can't stop talking about his fish and chips, can he?
I wouldn't be so crass to comment anything about his weight or appearance, but hey SE at times we might have wobbled, but we definitely did not fall over.. To you...

I like the well critiqued defensive analysis! It's a great bearing in where our foundations need to be, before we express ourselves offensively. Much like in chess - you get your defence in first. Clever post.

An astonishing away point against another big boot side . Actually rhought we played the better football and possibly created the best two chances with quality football, The whole defence throughout were magnificent as was the keeper.Steve Evans teams are notprious for signing the best players around and hoofing the ball up to them. The very side we would have lost about 5-0 last season.m How about a sneaky bid fo Sam Numbe.Dont see how anybody can be critical of that as every player gave their all and had to play agaibst the referee as well. Well done the players and Management. Could still do qwith two more attacking players to balance the overall squad. I agree with Steve! ☝️👏 Pleasure to be there to witness a serious shift from the Gas today and there are very good signs for the season to come. We look to be building on solid foundations.

4 points from the first two games, with no goals conceded.

Well I’m sure most peoples frustrations are that (and this is also shared by Matt as per his post match interview) we didn’t look after the ball that well. Unfortunately against a team that play direct and bombard balls into your boxes this makes that worse if you keep giving away possession. We need to improve starving teams like that of the ball and it takes the pressure off your defence then.

Dropping Shaw from the squad today after his cameo performance on Tuesday was plain odd. Agreed. From what I`ve seen of him, the lad looks quality. Give him a chance to show what he could do in the league.

We need to improve starving teams like that of the ball and it takes the pressure off your defence then. That’s because when you play a team like Rotherham (and Northampton) you’re often not winning the ball back you’re simply clearing it with your head. Each clearance often becomes another fight to retain the ball which limits how often winning it back becomes actual possession. These types of games are often scrappy for that very reason. Players can’t transition into good positions to retain possession they’re left trying to stay close to where the ball is dropping in order to help pick up second balls. It’s very hard and why these teams arent just hard to defend against but also hard to play well against…especially your ball players!

Yeah he’s done very well in friendlies and what amounted to a friendly v Cardiffs reserves in a pretty meaningless cup (so far). He’s looked good but that’s a million miles away from the heat of a league 1 game against seriously physical and direct opponents. Not sure what you think he’d bring to that?

Similar to against Cardiff the same players chosen created limited chances yesterday, Shaw brought a different dynamic to the team on Tuesday, perhaps he would have done the same again yesterday, or will do if he's ever given the chance.

But surely you can see the difference in the types of games? Tuesdays game was played at a completely different tempo. The ball barely left the grass for the entire game and by the 70th minute it was wide open with space everywhere! Yesterday was an aerial bombardment, played at a ferocious pace where the best we could do for 70% of it was clear our lines and regain defensive shape ready for the next one! Staggers me that people watch that then question why creative players didn’t make an impact or suggest a young kid still learning the game and making millions of mistakes could’ve done it better. Just my opinion fwiw.

Defended well, McCormick missed a sitter, Millers hit the post. Deserved a point for the way Rovers kept their shape for generally the whole match. No creativity again in the centre midfield, unable to get the team up the pitch, I really liked Jake Garrett showed his quality at Cardiff not sure why he did not get on yesterday, Ward imo is way off it at the moment, Hutchinson still finding his way, currently really missing Anthony Evans. Glad to see Chris martin back on the pitch. Hopefully a forward who will score goals arrives this week. Onwards we go to Stockport.
