All those signings that came in over the summer and I’m starting to wonder how many of them Taylor actually trusts.
Griffiths - yes, but he doesn’t have a choice
Mola - yes
Moore - yes
Senior - ? - no league starts and then got injured
Hutchinson - no (in and out of team)
Garrett - ? (in and out of team)
Forbes - no - hasn’t made a league matchday squad since the first game of the season. Came with a big reputation. Slightly strange not to have been given more time with Connor Taylor looking so laboured.
Bilongo - ? showed definite promise, if a bit raw. Taken off against Peterborough and then didn’t make the Wycombe squad
Omochere - ? lost his place for last league game.
O’Donkor - yes? - played his way into the team
Forde - ? not been given a start yet, possibly fitness related
Lindsay - yes? - getting more game time now, but odd to have displaced Conteh, who has been arguably our most consistent player
Sousa - yes? - played his way into the team
Sotiriou - yes? - getting a prolonged run
Most of those players have shown good ability in some games but having started the season with a relatively settled side who did OK, Taylor seems to have panicked after a couple of losses and now team selection seems a bit random. I’d like to see Forde and Sotiriou starting together as we know they had a good rapport at Orient, but so far they have spent only 16 minutes on the field together. That was Forde’s debut. In his three other cameos he has replaced Sotiriou, which seems a bit barmy.
Hopefully it will all settle down soon but it seems clear that Taylor has no idea of his best team. If as seems likely, this season turns into a bit of a struggle, it’s important that we pick up points against the lesser teams in the division. For the three games we picked up points in, the opposition currently sit 17th, 19th and 24th. These players started all of those games and we played a settled formation. That’s a settled back 5, central midfield combination and centre forward:
Griffiths
Mola
Moore
Wilson
Thomas
Bilongo
Conteh
Ward
Omochere
Maybe all those players haven’t been perfect this season, but when that team and formation was relatively settled, we made a decent start to the season. That team then lost at a good Stockport side and played reasonably well (minus Conteh who was on international duty) away at a decent Barnsley side. After a poor performance against Wigan, the script was ripped up, but was this a bit premature?
I’d like to see something like this for tonight’s game:
Griffiths
Mola
Wilson
Forbes (the evidence being that Connor Taylor seems woefully out of form/fitness - Moore to come back in after suspension)
Thomas
Bilongo
Conteh
Ward
Omochere
Sotiriou
Forde (if not fit, Sinclair)
Charlton are won two, lost two away from home, the losses coming at Reading and Stevenage. It’s probably not going to be pretty today but we can definitely get something from it. Taylor needs to trust in the majority of those players that started the season well. I don’t buy it that they can’t handle the atmosphere. We won our first two games of the season at the Mem. Big effort under the lights this evening and we can get the season going again. UTG!
