But the "opportunity missed" here is just to see the lad in a trial game yes? We have had many players with better credentials than being a Latvian under 21 player appear in trial matches we have arranged before and then decided to take it no further. You can't trial everybody!!

in fairness to padstow lots of talent goes unnoticed in football and i think its always worth say marcus stewart to just jot down some details and just spend a small amount of time researching the player and then making a decision on having him watched or offering a trial. i know a lad who scores goals for fun in the somerset county league and would easily score goals in the western league premier division but nobody is that interested.
when dc took over and signed sinclair and taylor and later james clarke supporters were not impressed but now there proven league 2 players performing well week in week out

I heard last week of a Latvian under 21 international midfielder/striker coming to England looking for a club,so going into the ground yesterday I saw Ian Holtby and Marcus Stewart and started to tell them of the player,i was given the brush off and told to get the player to write to the club asking for a trial, like he is going to do that. It strikes me that a) the club aren't interested in new players and b) definitely not interested in recommendations from anyone outside of the inner circle. This is not the first time over the years have recommended a player to the club and have been ignored, but it will definitely be the last I wonder how many times they get told about emerging talents?? I am guessing all the time, so this would be the normal response. What did you want them to say?? Come along to training on Monday?? Lol Latvian senior team is bad enough, expect most of there under 21's are no where near good enough for league football. But he has to have a trial straight away because he is an 'international'.

Did you used yo be called Gasheadwes? No,sorry to disappoint you Not at all disappointed. I just wondered because he used to give out shed loads of names of players for the club to take a look at. I was merely wondering if it was you in a different guise.

Just a thought but have we really got sufficient budget to take a chance on a U21 Latvian when we've only space for 2 more pro's in the squad?

I was in Costa in Merchants Quarter a few months ago. Young guy serving me coffee noticed Rovers badge on my gilet & said could I recommend him to the club as he'd played football to a good standard in Italy. Who should I approach @ Rovers? He might be a future Italian star!

On Saturday, 18 February 2012, 21:23, ........... wrote: Hi Chris I went to the St Ives v Gresley FA Vase match this afternoon. St Ives have a talented 19 year old striker called Connor Washington that we would well to send a scout along to assess (assuming that John has not already tracked him). If they had listened to me we would be few £million better off!!! I respect the work you do on here Finnish but the idea that Washington was ready for League Two football at the time of this e-mail is mental. The man scored 1 goal when he signed for Newport in 2013, a single goal in the Conference. Four L2 goals the season after and he's off to Peterborough for £500k. Wasn't ready, like it or lump it. Peterborough have perfected a recruitment process which works for them. They sell players for £££££££££ and buy a number of players to replace them, nurture them and hope the cycle repeats. In fairness to them it does often work, and Washington has done well to earn himself a move to QPR. But in and around that time, they also signed... - Nathaniel Mendez Laing - signed for £300k - now at Rochdale after scoring 4 in 51 for Peterborough. - Tyrone Barnett - £1.2m - 7 in 43 - now at Southend. - Shaun Jeffers - Free - now has 1 in 22 for Yeovil since his move. - Kyle Vassell - Undisclosed - Now on loan at Shrewsbury, scored 5 in 28 for Posh - Nicky Ajose - £300k - numerous loan spells, now at Swindon - Emile Sinclair - £100k - now at York City, has scored 2 in 24 since his move there. Football clubs have budgets and Bristol Rovers are no different. If we had turned down say, Ryan Brunt, a youngster at Stoke who was integral to our survival under Ward, in favour of Washington who scored 1 in 15 in the Conference, would we be praised for taking a chance on the kid? Or scrutinised because he wasn't ready? We don't have the budget to do what Peterborough do.
My point is, we don't have circa £2 million + to waste on 6 forwards who have shown a bit of promise in leagues below our own. I think the scouts on here need to recognise that.

Oh, and if it is Gutkovskis that the OP is talking about, he has recently been begging for a move to Rangers, with his agent getting involved in paper talk to try and push a deal through. Their manager doesn't think he's good enough. Even if he is, the idea that BRFC can compete with Rangers in terms of wages isn't even worth talking about.
I await to see who he signs for on Tuesday, but it won't be someone with a budget like ours.

You use the emotive laden phrase 'given the brush off', as well as 'ignored' but it was a match day so maybe MS could be cut a bit of slack when he's trying to do his job; namely help get US a win on THIS day? Why not write to them instead of interrupt a professional doing his job. Full detailsof how to get a trial are on the web site for EVERYONE to see, even plebs like me. They are very short & simple. In an age where few people seem to value information and clear procedures I'm suprised that an older gentleman can't manage to see the positive side of this. If they had spoke to you for 1min and then said "tell him to come along at 10am on Tuesday" I'd actually be unhappier as any job has to have a workable, professional system in place. It wasn't me they asked to write but the player concerned and as he was in transit it wasn't possible to contact him.He only arrived today and by the time I had spoken to him and the letter gone off he would have run out of time to a) have a trial and b) if successful then to be registered including international clearance,so it was verbal or nothing so it was nothing

Padstow, if the guy has a trial game set up, perhaps some one from the club could go if it is not behind closed doors. I'd suggest that you still let the club know the details. Not my problem

No I don't have the time or inclination to spend the hours Wes does watching videos of of players, just as an aside I did what everyone is telling me I should have done and write to the club at the beginning of last season regarding keeping an eye on Bradley Ash at Weston, was told no interest and didn't think he was good enough to get into Westons side, how right can you be?Who is he signed for now at a fee not dissimilar to that which we paid for Gaffney.Someone must see something in him
